The role of the continuum and the spurious 1- transitions in incoherent mu - e conversion rate calculations
By using the Continuum RPA (CRPA) method, the incoherent transition strength of the exotic mu - e conversion in the 208Pb and 40Ca nuclei is investigated. The question whether excited nuclear states lying high in the continuum give an important contribution to the incoherent rate is addressed. The admixture of spurious components in the rate coming from 1- excitations is investigated in detail by using the self-consistent CRPA with Skyrme interactions as well as a less consistent version and by employing two ways to remove the spurious strength: the use of effective operators or simply the exclusion of the spurious state appearing close to zero energy. In all cases, the correction achieved is quite large
A 340 kDa hyaluronic acid secreted by human vascular smooth muscle cells regulates their proliferation and migration
The formation of atherosclerotic lesions is characterized by invasion of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) into the tunica intima of the arterial wall and subsequently by increased proliferation of VSMC, a process apparently restricted to the intimal layer of blood vessels. Both events are preceded by the pathological overexpression of several growth factors, such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) which is a potent mitogen for VSMC and can induce their chemotaxis. PDGF is generally not expressed in the normal artery but it is upregulated in atherosclerotic lesions. We have previously shown that PDGF-BB specifically stimulates proliferating VSMC to secrete a 340 kDa hyaluronic acid (HA-340). Here, we present evidence regarding the biological functions of this glycan. We observed that HA-340 inhibited the PDGF-induced proliferation of human VSMC in a dosedependent manner and enhanced the PDGF-dependent invasion of VSMC through a basement membrane barrier. These effects were abolished following treatment of HA-340 with hyaluronidase. The effect of HA-340 on the PDGF-dependent invasion of VSMC coincided with increased secretion of the 72-kDa type IV collagenase by VSMC and was completely blocked by GM6001, a hydroxamic acid inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases. HA-340 did not exert any chemotactic potency, nor did it affect chemotaxis of VSMC along a PDGF gradient. In human atheromatic aortas, we found that HA-340 is expressed with a negative concentration gradient from the tunica media to the tunica intima and the atheromatic plaque. Our findings suggest that HA-340 may be linked to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, by modulating VSMC proliferation and invasio

Isoscalar dipole coherence at low energies and forbidden E1 strength
In 16O and 40Ca an isoscalar, low-energy dipole transition (IS-LED)
exhausting approximately 4% of the isoscalar dipole (ISD) energy-weighted sum
rule is experimentally known, but conspicuously absent from recent theoretical
investigations of ISD strength. The IS-LED mode coincides with the so-called
isospin-forbidden E1 transition. We report that for N=Z nuclei up to 100Sn the
fully self-consistent Random-Phase-Approximation with finite-range forces,
phenomenological and realistic, yields a collective IS-LED mode, typically
overestimating its excitation energy, but correctly describing its IS strength
and electroexcitation form factor. The presence of E1 strength is solely due to
the Coulomb interaction between the protons and the resulting isospin-symmetry
breaking. The smallness of its value is related to the form of the transition
density, due to translational invariance. The calculated values of E1 and ISD
strength carried by the IS-LED depend on the effective interaction used.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that in N-not-equal-Z nuclei this
distinct mode of IS surface vibration can develop as such or mix strongly with
skin modes and thus influence the pygmy dipole strength as well as the ISD
strength function. In general, theoretical models currently in use may be unfit
to predict its precise position and strength, if at all its existence.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, EPJA submitte
Wavelength-Multiplexed Polymer LEDs:Towards 55 Mb/s Organic Visible Light Communications
We present recent progress on visible light communication systems using polymer light-emitting diodes as the transmitters and a commercial silicon photodetector as the receiver. In this paper, we use transmitters at red, green, and blue wavelengths to investigate the maximum on-off keying link performance of each device type as the first steps toward a wavelength-division multiplexed link. We show that a total transmission speed of 13 Mb/s is achievable when considering the raw bandwidth of each of the RGB PLEDs. Such a rate represents a 30% gain over previously demonstrated systems. Further capacity improvement can be achieved using high performance artificial neural network equalizer offering a realistic prospect for transmission speeds up to 54.9 Mb/s

An introduction to Graph Data Management
A graph database is a database where the data structures for the schema
and/or instances are modeled as a (labeled)(directed) graph or generalizations
of it, and where querying is expressed by graph-oriented operations and type
constructors. In this article we present the basic notions of graph databases,
give an historical overview of its main development, and study the main current
systems that implement them
