Photometric study of selected cataclysmic variables II. Time-series photometry of nine systems

We present time-series photometry of nine cataclysmic variables: EI UMa, V844Her, V751 Cyg, V516 Cyg, GZ Cnc, TY Psc, V1315 Aql, ASAS J002511+1217.12, V1315 Aql and LN UMa. The observations were conducted at various observatories, covering 170 hours and comprising 7,850 data points in total. For the majority of targets we confirm previously reported periodicities and for some of them we give, for the first time, their spectroscopic orbital periods. For those dwarf-nova systems which we observed during both quiescence and outburst, the increase in brightness was followed by a decrease in the amount of flickering. Quasi-periodic oscillations have either been discovered, or were confirmed. For the eclipsing system V1315 Aql we have covered 9 eclipses, and obtained a refined orbital ephemeris. We find that, during its long baseline of observations, no change in the orbital period of this system has occurred. V1315 Aql also shows eclipses of variable depth.Comment: 30 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables. Submitted to JA

Assessing end-user awareness of social engineering and phishing

Social engineering is a significant problem involving technical and nontechnical ploys in order to acquire information from unsuspecting users. This paper presents an assessment of user awareness of such methods in the form of email phishing attacks. Our experiment used a webbased survey, which presented a mix of 20 legitimate and illegitimate emails, and asked participants to classify them and explain the rationale for their decisions. This assessment shows that the 179 participants were 36% successful in identifying legitimate emails, versus 45% successful in spotting illegitimate ones. Additionally, in many cases, the participants who identified illegitimate emails correctly could not provide convincing reasons for their selections

Evaluating the Usability Impacts of Security Interface Adjustments in Word 2007

Prior research has suggested that integrating security features with user goals and increasing their visibility would improve the usability of the associated functionalities. This paper investigates how these approaches affect the efficiency of use and the level of user satisfaction. The user interface of Word 2007 was modified according to these principles, with usability tests being conducted with both the original and the modified user interfaces. The results suggest that integrating security features with user goals improves the efficiency of use, but the impacts upon user satisfaction cannot be clearly identified based on the collected data. No indications of any major improvements in the efficiency of use or user satisfaction are found when the visibility of security features is increased. The combination of these two methods seems to improve both the efficiency of use and the resulting user satisfaction

Observing plasticity of the auditory system: Volumetric decreases along with increased functional connectivity in aspiring professional musicians

Playing music relies on several sensory systems and the motor system, and poses strong demands on control processes, hence, offering an excellent model to study how experience can mold brain structure and function. Although most studies on neural correlates of music expertise rely on cross-sectional comparisons, here we compared within-person changes over time in aspiring professionals intensely preparing for an entrance exam at a University of the Arts to skilled amateur musicians not preparing for a music exam. In the group of aspiring professionals, we observed gray-matter volume decrements in left planum polare, posterior insula, and left inferior frontal orbital gyrus over a period of about 6 months that were absent among the amateur musicians. At the same time, the left planum polare, the largest cluster of structural change, showed increasing functional connectivity with left and right auditory cortex, left precentral gyrus, left supplementary motor cortex, left and right postcentral gyrus, and left cingulate cortex, all regions previously identified to relate to music expertise. Isoperibolic study of hydroxylamine in aqueous solutions in the presence of selected inorganic salts

PresentationThe thermal decomposition of hydroxylamine aqueous solutions in two different concentrations and two temperatures was studied in the presence of KCl, NaCl and Na2SO4 using isoperibolic calorimetry. It was found that Na2SO4 was substantially reducing its decomposition rate, while the other two compounds had a rather insignificant influence on hydroxylamine decomposition rate. The results are compared with the effect that the same salts have on ammonium nitrate decomposition rate and similarities and differences are discussed

Unsung heroes: who supports social work students on placement?

Since the introduction of the three year degree programme in 2003, social work education has undergone a number of significant changes. The time students spend on placement has been increased to two hundred days, and the range of placement opportunities and the way in which these placements have been configured has significantly diversified. A consistent feature over the years, however, has been the presence of a Practice Educator (PE) who has guided, assessed and taught the student whilst on placement. Unsurprisingly, the role of the PE and the pivotal relationship they have with the student has been explored in the past and features in social work literature. This paper, however, concentrates on a range of other relationships which are of significance in providing support to students on placement. In particular it draws on research to discuss the role of the university contact tutor, the place of the wider team in which the student is sited, and the support offered by family, friends and others. Placements and the work undertaken by PE’s will continue to be integral to the delivery of social work education. It is, however, essential to recognise and value the often over looked role of others in providing support to students on placement

Energy, Environmental Impact and Indoor Environmental Quality of Add-Ons in Buildings

On a European scale, the existing building stock has poor energy performance and partic-ularly vulnerable structures. Indeed, most of the existing buildings were built before the introduction of energy standards and under structural safety criteria different from those currently required. It is therefore necessary the intervention in existing buildings according to an integrated approach that contemplates both the structural safety and the energy efficiency of buildings. This study, con-sistently with the objectives of the European research project “Proactive synergy of integrated Efficient Technologies on buildings’ Envelopes (Pro-GET-OnE)”, proposes a retrofit intervention for a student dormitory of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The scope of the evaluation is to understand how an integrated intervention, that implies a structural and energy retrofit, as well as a spatial redistribution, leads to an improvement of the Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ). In detail, the structural retrofit was performed through exoskeleton that leads to the addition of new living spaces and to a remodeling of the building facades. The energy retrofit regarded all three levers of energy efficiency, and thus the building envelope, the microclimatic control systems, and the systems from renewable sources. The integrated intervention, in addition to a reduction of energy demand, has led to advantages in terms of IEQ. Thermal comfort, both during summer and winter, is improved and the hours of suitable CO2 concentration pass from 34% in the pre-retrofit stage up to 100% in the post retrofit stage
