    Stability prediction of early orthopedic treatment in Class III malocclusion: morphologic discriminant analysis

    Background To evaluate morphologic differences between class III malocclusion success and failure treatment subjects in order to identify which variables are more predictive for long-term stability in early orthopedic treatment. In this retrospective study, 31 patients were enrolled from the Department of Orthodontics (Rome Tor Vergata). Inclusion criteria were as follows: white ancestry, class III malocclusion, mixed dentition, cervical stage (CS) 1-2, no pseudo-class III. Pre-treatment radiographic and cast records were collected. Each patient underwent rapid maxillary expansion/facial mask/bite block (RME/FM/BB) orthopedic treatment until correction. At T1 (permanent dentition, CS4), records were recollected. According to treatment stability, relapse group (RG, 19) and success group (SG, 12) were identified. Sagittal and vertical cephalometric and digital cast measurements were performed. Student's t tests were used for statistically significant differences inter and intra groups. For discriminant analysis, relapse or success status was added to each patient's T0 data. Results At T0, RG showed larger upper anterior transversal width (p = 0.0266), while at T1 the upper anterior length was shorter than SG (p = 0.0028). Between T1 and T0, both groups showed larger upper anterior and posterior transversal widths. SG had greater upper anterior (p = 0.0066) and posterior (p = 0.449) sagittal length. RG presented larger lower anterior (p = 0.0012) and posterior (p = 0.0002) transversal widths, while there were no differences in SG lower arch. Discriminant analysis provided two predictive variables with an accuracy of 80.6%: upper anterior length and upper posterior length. Conclusion A shorter and wider maxilla could be a predisposing factor for relapse and failure of the early orthopedic treatment of class III malocclusion patients. The absence of mandibular changes could be predictable for treatment success

    Thermographic Imaging in Cultural Heritage: A Short Review

    Over the recent period, there has been an increasing interest in the use of pulsed infrared thermography (PT) for the non-destructive evaluation of Cultural Heritage (CH). Unlike other techniques that are commonly employed in the same field, PT enables the depth-resolved detection of different kinds of subsurface features, thus providing helpful information for both scholars and restorers. Due to this reason, several research activities are currently underway to further improve the PT effectiveness. In this manuscript, the specific use of PT for the analysis of three different types of CH, namely documentary materials, panel paintings–marquetery, and mosaics, will be reviewed. In the latter case, i.e., mosaics, passive thermography combined with ground penetrating radar (GPR) and digital microscopy (DM) have also been deepened, considering their suitability in the open field. Such items have been selected because they are characterized by quite distinct physical and structural properties and, therefore, different PT (and, in some cases, verification) approaches have been employed for their investigations

    Chemical bonding in a set of six cuprous complexes with simple nitriles (CN-, HNC, HCN, CH3NC, and CH3CN) is investigated by means of a recently devised analysis scheme framed in density-functional theory and quantitatively singling out concurrent charge flows such as \u3c3 donation and \u3c0 backdonation. The results of our analysis are comparatively assessed against qualitative models for charge redistribution based on the popular concepts of octet rule and resonance structures, and the relative importance of different charge-flow channels relating to \u3c3 donation, \u3c0 back-donation, polarization, and hyperconjugation is discussed on a quantitative basis

    Appraisals of instructional context, control beliefs and academic emotions. A case study with advanced university students

    [EN] In this paper we set out to provide contributions that reveal more about students who attend to university classrooms, from knowing their perceptions of the instructional context, the possibilities of taking control of their learning processes and the emotions they experience accordingly. We worked with an accidental sample (N=39) composed by all the students which in 2010 attended a course on the final part of the curriculum of a career of education at the Universidad Nacional de Río Cuarto (Argentina). Data were collected through the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire, the Achievement Emotions Questionnaire and focal semistructured interviews. The results are organized into four sections: a) appraisals attributed by students to instructional context; b) aspects of their control belief of learning; c) academic emotions experienced within the context of learning considered; d) statistically significant correlations between variables motivational and emotional focalized in this study. The final considerations are grouped into three categories: a) relevance of considering appraisals and control beliefs as antecedents of academic emotions; b) addressing the importance of tasks that are appreciated as significant for professional education and c) need to investigate into personal aspects in real contexts of learning.[ES] En este trabajo nos propusimos brindar aportes que permitan conocer más acerca de los estudiantes que habitan las aulas universitarias, a partir de indagar sus percepciones sobre el contexto instructivo, las posibilidades de tomar control en sus procesos de aprendizaje y las emociones que experimentan en consecuencia. Se trabajó con una muestra accidental (N=39) compuesta por el total de alumnos que durante el año 2010 cursó una asignatura ubicada en el tramo final del plan de estudio de una Carrera de Educación de la Universidad Nacional de Río Cuarto (Argentina). Los datos fueron recabados a través del Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire, el Achievement Emotions Questionnaire y entrevistas focales semiestructuradas. Los resultados se organizan en cuatro apartados: a) valoraciones atribuidas por los alumnos al contexto instructivo; b) aspectos relativos a sus creencias de control de los aprendizajes; c) emociones académicas experimentada en el marco del contexto de aprendizaje considerado; d) correlaciones estadísticamente significativas entre variables motivacionales y emocionales focalizadas en este estudio.     Maxillary arch development with Invisalign system: Analysis of expansion dental movements on digital dental casts

    Objectives: To evaluate tooth movements during maxillary arch expansion with clear aligner treatment.Materials and Methods: The study group included 28 subjects (16 females, 12 males, mean age 31.9 +/- 5.4 years) collected prospectively from January 2018 to May 2019. Inclusion criteria were European ancestry, posterior transverse discrepancy of 3-6 mm, permanent dentition stage, presence of second permanent molars, mild or moderate crowding, and good compliance with aligners. Treatment protocol included nonextraction strategies, application of Invisalign clear aligner system, and no auxiliaries other than Invisalign attachments. Linear and angular measurements were performed before treatment (T1), at the end of treatment (T2), and on final virtual models (T2 ClinCheck). A paired t-test was used to compare T2-T1 and T2-T2 ClinCheck changes. The level of significance was set at 5%.Results: Statistically significant differences were found for all measurements, except for ones at the upper second molars. The greatest increase in maxillary width was detected at the upper first and second premolars: 13.5 mm for the first premolar and 13.8 mm for the second premolar at T2. Comparison of T2-T1 angular outcomes showed statistically significant changes in the inclinations of all teeth except for the second permanent molars. T2-T2 ClinCheck showed significant differences for both linear and angular measurements for maxillary canines, resulting in poor predictability.Conclusions: Maxillary arch development revealed a progressive reduction of the expansion rate and buccal tipping in the anterior, lateral, and posterior regions, with the greatest net increase at the first and second premolars. Clinical attention should be paid to maxillary canine movements, and overcorrection should be planned for them during dentoalveolar expansion

    Idiopathic facial palsy: umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses

    Idiopathic facial palsy is the most common disease of the VII cranial nerve. There are many treatments to facilitate recovery from this condition: pharmacological, surgical, rehabilitative, but the effectiveness of some of these treatments, especially the latter, is still under discussion. The purpose of this umbrella review of systematic reviews is to analyse the literature in order to investigate the different rehabilitation interventions in patients suffering from idiopathic facial palsy. A scientific literature search was carried out from January 2009 until August 2019, using Mesh the terms "facial palsy", "Bell's Palsy", "idiopathic facial nerve palsy", combined with "rehabilitation" and "therapy". Initially all the systematic reviews and meta-analyses of the last 10 years concerning rehabilitation treatments for the recovery of injured functions in facial palsy were included. Given the heterogeneity of the studies in the literature, which do not differentiate the different causes of facial palsy, all the causes of idiopathic facial palsy were included in the review. The research resulted in 94 published systematic reviews but only 6 were considered in respect to the inclusion criteria. All studies agree on the lack of high-quality scientific work to be able to say that Bell's physiotherapy treatments for facial palsy are effective, in particular with regard to recovery times during the rehabilitation process. Future studies are needed, in order to highlight the therapeutic implications of the different rehabilitation methods, with standardized protocols, in patients suffering from facial palsy of different aetiology

    Chemical promenades: Exploring potential-energy surfaces with immersive virtual reality

    The virtual-reality framework AVATAR (Advanced Virtual Approach to Topological Analysis of Reactivity) for the immersive exploration of potential-energy landscapes is presented. AVATAR is based on modern consumer-grade virtual-reality technology and builds on two key concepts: (a) the reduction of the dimensionality of the potential-energy surface to two process-tailored, physically meaningful generalized coordinates, and (b) the analogy between the evolution of a chemical process and a pathway through valleys (potential wells) and mountain passes (saddle points) of the associated potential energy landscape. Examples including the discovery of competitive reaction paths in simple A + BC collisional systems and the interconversion between conformers in ring-puckering motions of flexible rings highlight the innovation potential that augmented and virtual reality convey for teaching, training, and supporting research in chemistry

    Changes in spine alignment and postural balance after breast cancer surgery: a rehabilitative point of view

    Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor in female patients in developed countries. Recent articles indicate that one-sided mastectomy or minor breast surgery to treat breast cancer can have deleterious effects on posture and the musculoskeletal system. The purpose of this study was to investigate the alterations post-breast cancer surgery of the spine alignment associated to the balance not reported by the noninvasive instrumentation. We enrolled 30 women who had undergone treatment for breast cancer (BG) and were on a waiting-list for rehabilitation treatment and a control group of 30 healthy volunteer women (CG), matched by age and body mass index. The stabilometry was performed using a force platform (Kistler Instruments, Winterthur, Switzerland) test during quiet standing with closed-eyes (EC) and open-eyes (EO), recording the position of the center of pressure (CoP) for 51.2 sec. The stabilogram or the time plot of the two coordinates, X and Y, of the CoP was obtained, which represent anteroposterior and midlateral balance. Spinal posture was measured using the Formetric-4D rasterstereographic system (DIERS, International GmbH, Schlangenbad, Germany), and thoracic kyphotic angle, lumbar lordotic angle, and surface trunk rotation were evaluated. Sixty participants were analyzed (CG:30; BG:30). For the spine rasterstereography a statistically significant difference was shown with regard to anterior-posterior flexion of the trunk major in BG; pelvic inclination and twist of half-pelvis decreased in BG; normalized lumbosacral inversion point decreased in BG; surface rotation major in BG; and lateral deviation major in BG. Compared with the values for the stabilometry test with EO and EC, a statistically significant difference was observed, respectively, for ellipse length (mm; p = 0.04) and ellipse area (mm2; p = 0.04) with EO and in ellipse area (mm2) with EC (p = 0.05), increased in BG for both conditions. No difference was shown for CoP velocity and oscillations between the groups. Breast cancer survivors after prostheses or tissue expanders for mastectomy showed a spine's misalignment present both on the sagittal plane, both on the coronal and frontal plane, increased in BG regard to anterior-posterior flexion of the trunk, surface rotation, and lateral deviation. It is associated with greater energy expenditure for the postural balance control increased in BG with a major ellipse area in EO and EC conditions and major ellipse length in EC condition
