    Quasars are the most luminous type of active galactic nuclei and their study is fundamental to shed light on the high redshift Universe. In this work we take advantage of the rare cases of close projected and physical quasar pairs to detect the presence of the cool enriched gas and of the dark mass that surround quasars. This Thesis consists of two parts. In the first one we present optical spectroscopy of projected quasar pairs (i.e., two quasars that are close in the sky but have discordant redshifts) that represents a powerful tool to investigate the metal absorption lines imprinted on the spectrum of the background quasar by the gaseous halo surrounding the foreground one (Chapter 1). In the last decades, this technique has been extensively used to detect the haloes of non\u2013active galaxies, but to date no systematic study has been performed in the case of quasars. We selected a sample of 46 projected pairs, with separations ranging from 3c 50 kpc to 3c 200 kpc, aimed to assess the presence of Mg II and CIV absorptions systems associated to foreground quasars. In Chapter 2 we show the first outcomes of our programme, based on the spectra of 13 pairs partially collected by me at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). These data reveal a high covering fraction for the Mg II absorbers and a non isotropical distribution of the gas. Our results are compared to those of similar works performed on non\u2013active galaxies available in the literature. We propose that the cool gaseous haloes of quasars and of normal galaxies are similar, once the stellar mass of the systems is taken into account. Observations of the remaining 33 pairs are ongoing at the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). The preparatory analysis of the SDSS spectra of these systems show that a 10m class telescope is mandatory for this kind of studies (Chapter 3). The second part of the Thesis addresses with physical systems of quasars (i.e., two or more quasars that have small projected and redshift separations) that are an expected outcome of the current hierarchical framework of galaxy formation and evolution (Chapter 4). In Chapter 5 we accurately study the dynamics of six low redshift quasar pairs and we found that the dynamical mass required for this systems to be gravitationally bound is larger of than the stellar masses of the host galaxies. This suggests that these pairs are hosted by galaxies with massive dark haloes or that they reside in a group/cluster of galaxies. In Chapter 6, we present our discovery of the second physical quasar triplet known to date. We estimate that these systems are extremely rare in terms of simple accidental superposition of the three quasars, suggesting a possible common origin for their ignition. Finally, conclusions and future perspectives of this study are presented in Chapter 7. The present work principally deals with the analysis and studies presented in Farina et al. (2012b, on the gaseous haloes of quasars), in Farina et al. (2011, on the dynamical study of low redshift quasar pairs), and in Farina et al. (2012c, on the discovery of a new quasar triplet).     Complexes of the oxa-thia macrocycles [18]aneO4S2, [15]aneO3S2 and the oxa-selena macrocycle [18]aneO4Se2 (L) of types [MCl2(L)]FeCl4 (M = Sc or Y) were prepared from [ScCl3(thf)3] or [YCl2(THF)5][YCl4(THF)2] and the ligand in anhydrous MeCN, using FeCl3 as a chloride abstractor. The [MI2(L)]I, [LaI3(L)] and [LuI2(L)]I have been prepared from the ligands and the appropriate anhydrous metal triiodide in MeCN. Complexes of type [LaI3(crown)] and [LuI2(crown)]I (crown = 18-crown-6, 15-crown-5) were made for comparison. Use of the metal iodide results in complexes with high solubility compared to the corresponding chlorides, although also with increased sensitivity to moisture. All complexes were characterised by microanalysis, IR, (1)H, (45)Sc and (77)Se NMR spectroscopy as appropriate. X-ray crystal structures are reported for [ScCl2([18]aneO4S2)][FeCl4], [ScI2([18]aneO4S2)]I, [YCl2(18-crown-6)]3[Y2Cl9], [YCl2([18]aneO4S2)][FeCl4], [LaI3(15-crown-5)], [LaI2(18-crown-6)(MeCN)]I, [LuI(18-crown-6)(MeCN)2]I2, [Lu(15-crown-5)(MeCN)2(OH2)]I3, [LaI3([18]aneO4S2)], [LaI([18]aneO4S2)(OH2)]I2, [LaI3([18]aneO4Se2)] and [LuI2([18]aneO4Se2)]I. In each complex all the neutral donor atoms of the macrocycles are coordinated to the metal centre, showing very rare examples of these oxophilic metal centres coordinated to thioether groups, and the first examples of coordinated selenoether donors. In some cases MeCN or adventitious water displaces halide ligands, but not the S/Se donors from La or Lu complexes. A complex of the oxa-tellura macrocycle [18]aneO4Te2, [ScCl2([18]aneO4Te2)][FeCl4] was isolated, but is unstable in MeCN solution, depositing elemental Te. YCl3 and 18-crown-6 produced [YCl2(18-crown-6)]3[Y2Cl9], the asymmetric unit of which contains two cations with a trans-YCl2 arrangement and a third with a cis-YCl2 group

    Hazard and cumulative incidence of umbilical cord metabolic acidemia at birth in fetuses experiencing the second stage of labor and pathologic intrapartum fetal heart rate requiring expedited delivery

    Purpose: The aim of the study was to determine the cause-specific hazard (CSH) and the cumulative incidence function (CIF) for umbilical cord metabolic acidemia at birth (MA; pH < 7.0 and/or BE [Formula: see text] - 12 mmol/L) at delivery in patients experiencing the 2nd stage of labor (2STG), stratified for both FIGO-2015 pathologic intrapartum cardiotocography requiring expedited delivery (CTG_RED) and duration of 2nd stage of labor. Methods: 3459 pregnancies experiencing the 2nd stage of labor and delivering at the Division of Obstetrics and Prenatal Medicine, IRCCS Sant'Orsola-Malpighi Hospital, Bologna (Italy), were identified between 2018 and 2019. Survival analysis was used to assess CSH and CIF for MA, stratified for FIGO-2015 pathologic CTG and relevant covariates. Results: FIGO-2015 pathological CTG with expedited operative delivery or urgent cesarean section within 10 or 20 min from diagnosis, respectively occurred in 282/3459 (8.20%). The rate of MA at delivery was 3.32% (115/3459). The spline of CSH for MA showed a direct correlation with the duration of 2STG always presenting higher values and greater slope in the presence of pathologic CTG, with plateau between 60 and 120 min and rapid increase after 120 min. The CIF at 180 min in the 2STG was 2.67% for nonpathological and 10.63% for pathological CTG_RED. Nulliparity, pathological CTG, and meconium-stained amniotic fluid resulted significant predictors of MA in our multivariable model. Conclusion: The risk for MA increases moderately across the 2STG with nonpathological CTG and quadruples with pathological CTG_RED. Adjustment for other predictors of MA including meconium-stained amniotic fluid and nulliparity reveals a significant hazard increase for MA associated with pathologic CTG_RED

    Tree and orchard variability of Silver King nectarine(Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) fruit quality components

    The variability of crop quality accounts for most of seasonal variation of farmers’ incomes, since fruit growth and quality components may greatly change according to various environmental and within-tree factors. Canopy architecture and orchard layout are mainly responsible for fruit size, quality and its variability. A positive relationship was measured in peach between intercepted radiation and PAR and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC). This study was carried out to measure within tree and orchard variability of fruit of the early ripening cv. Silver King nectarine (Prunus persica (L.), Batsch) 8-years-old peach trees trained to a Y-shape and Delayed vase. Fruit were picked twice and all harvested fruit were analysed in terms of size, soluble solids content, titratable acidity, pH, firmness and TEAC. Fruit weight variability between single trees was larger than within the tree and between training systems. Fruit soluble solid content and firmness had a higher variability than fruit size and within tree variability was higher in Delayed vase trees than in Y-shaped ones. TEAC changed with fruit position within the canopy

Global and distributed implementations of the extended Kalman filter are the key elements of the work. In addition, the paper is also aimed at describing and developing a recursive implementation of the autocovariance least square algorithm for the on-line updating of the tuning knobs of the filter, demonstrating its relevance in the performance monitoring of chemical processes

    Characterizing the molecular and morphophysiological diversity of Italian red clover

    Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is the third major forage species in Europe, but there is limited information on the biodiversity and the genetic structure of landraces and natural populations which evolved in this region. The objective of this study was producing such information for Italian germplasm on the ground of molecular and morphophysiological diversity. The study included 16 Italian natural populations from a wide range of environments, four landraces representing the four traditional commercial ecotypes, and two varieties. Eight morphophysiological traits were assessed in a replicated trial under field conditions, whereas two AFLPs primer combinations with 140 polymorphic markers were recorded on a random sample of 13 genotypes per population. Ordination and classification results based on morphophysiological data clearly kept track of the type of germplasm (i.e. landrace or natural population) and its geographic origin, unlike results based on molecular markers. Euclidean distances among populations based on morphophysiological traits were not correlated with Nei’s genetic distances based on molecular markers according to Mantel’s test. Geographical distances among landrace or natural population material was correlated with distances based on morphophysiological traits but not with those based on molecular markers. The average within-population variation stimated via molecular markers was about 2.6-fold higher than that among populations, preventing an acceptable discrimination among most populations. On average, natural populations tended to have within-population variation similar to varieties and somewhat lower than landraces.     Calcium Ascorbate Coating Improves Postharvest Quality and Storability of Fresh-Cut Slices of Coscia and Abate Fétel Pears (Pyrus communis L.)

    Flesh firmness is closely related to fruit ripeness and is typically a reliable indicator of shelf-life potential so it could be considered a crucial quality index for the determination of pear quality. Flesh softening after cutting could considerably affect consumer acceptance of fresh-cut pears (Pyrus communis L.). Indeed, mechanical stress (cutting, peeling, etc.) could lead to ethylene production that results in the hydrolysis of pectic substances in the cell walls. The effectiveness of an edible coating treatment on the physical-chemical, nutraceutical, and sensorial analysis was evaluated on two pear cultivars: the summer-ripening ‘Coscia’ and the late-ripening ‘Abate Fétel’, both harvested at their commercial ripening stage. Pear fruit slices were treated with calcium ascorbate, xanthan gum or HPMC coating and stored at 4◦C for 12 days. Weight loss, flesh firmness, soluble solid content, titratable acidity, ∆E color, browning surface, total polyphenol content, and antioxidant capacity were measured. Sensory analysis was carried out. Results showed that calcium ascorbate treatment applied to fruit slices significantly extended their shelf-life because it considerably inhibited browning and color changes in fresh-cut slices of both pear cultivars over seven days of storage. Furthermore, pear slices treated with calcium ascorbate revealed a higher antioxidant capacity and a lower content of total phenols during cold storage
