On Structuring Proof Search for First Order Linear Logic

Full first order linear logic can be presented as an abstract logic programming language in Miller's system Forum, which yields a sensible operational interpretation in the 'proof search as computation' paradigm. However, Forum still has to deal with syntactic details that would normally be ignored by a reasonable operational semantics. In this respect, Forum improves on Gentzen systems for linear logic by restricting the language and the form of inference rules. We further improve on Forum by restricting the class of formulae allowed, in a system we call G-Forum, which is still equivalent to full first order linear logic. The only formulae allowed in G-Forum have the same shape as Forum sequents: the restriction does not diminish expressiveness and makes G-Forum amenable to proof theoretic analysis. G-Forum consists of two (big) inference rules, for which we show a cut elimination procedure. This does not need to appeal to finer detail in formulae and sequents than is provided by G-Forum, thus successfully testing the internal symmetries of our system.Comment: Author website at http://alessio.guglielmi.name/res

The choice of gadolinium-based contrast agents: a radiologist’s responsibility between pharmaceutical equivalence and bioethical issues

    Get PDF
Contrast Agents (CA) are among the most commonly prescribed drugs worldwide, and are used, with a variety of techniques, to increase and intensify the differences between body tissues and to help radiologist make diagnoses in a fast and precise way. In recent decades, advancements in research have resulted in significant improvements in their composition, and have made them safer and better-tolerated by patients; this notwithstanding, although the currently available CA are generally considered to be safe, their use is not completely without risk. The use of CA faces the radiologist with economic considerations, bioethical dilemmas, and possible profiles of professional responsibility. In fact, to achieve the best results in diagnostic imaging, radiologists have to focus on making an appropriate choice of CA, in consideration of efficacy, safety and appropriateness. Moreover, besides by cost/benefit models widely introduced in health management, radiologists are also influenced by their responsibility of appropriate use for the various diagnostic tests and, finally, the choice of best CA to utilise for each individual patient. Thus, the dilemma of choosing between the best and the most cost-effective tests and procedures is occurring more frequently every day. Different variables, such as the patient, examinations, and technology available, can affect the choice of CA in terms of obtaining the highest diagnostic quality, minimum impact on higher-risk patients, and optimisation of used volumes and injection flow

Sterile neutrinos: the necessity for a 5 sigma definitive clarification

Several different experiments have hinted to the existence of "anomalies" in the neutrino sector, implying the possible presence of additional sterile neutrinos or of other options. A definitive experimental search, capable to clarify either in favour or against all these anomalies at the appropriate > 5 sigma level has been proposed by the ICARUS-NESSIE Collaboration. The technique is based on two innovative concepts, namely (1) a large mass Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr-TPC) now in full operation at LNGS and (2) the search for spectral differences in two identical detectors at different distances along the (anti-)neutrino line(s).Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

Design, synthesis, docking studies and monoamine oxidase inhibition of a small library of 1-acetyl- and 1-thiocarbamoyl-3,5-diphenyl-4,5-dihydro-(1h)-pyrazoles

New N-acetyl/N-thiocarbamoylpyrazoline derivatives were designed and synthesized in high yields to assess their inhibitory activity and selectivity against human monoamine oxidase A and B. The most important chiral compounds were separated into their single enantiomers and tested. The impact of the substituents at N1, C3 and C5 positions as well the influence of the configuration of the C5 on the biological activity were analyzed. Bulky aromatic groups at C5 were not tolerated. p-Prenyloxyaryl moiety at C3 oriented the selectivity toward the B isoform. The results were also corroborated by molecular modelling studies providing new suggestions for the synthesis of privileged structures to serve as lead compounds for the treatment of mood disorders and neurodegenerative diseases

Synthesis and biological evaluation of anti-Toxoplasma gondii activity of a novel scaffold of thiazolidinone derivatives

We designed and synthesised novel N-substituted 1,3-thiazolidin-4-one derivatives for the evaluation of their anti-Toxoplasma gondii efficacy. This scaffold was functionalised both at the N1-hydrazine portion with three structurally different moieties and at the lactam nitrogen with substituted benzyl groups selected on the basis of our previous structure-activity relationships studies. Using three different assay methods, the compounds were assessed in vitro to determine both the levels of efficacy against the tachyzoites of T. gondii (IC50 = 5-148 μM), as well as any evidence of cytotoxicity towards human host cells (TD50 = 68 to ≥320 μM). Results revealed that ferrocene-based thiazolidinones can possess potent anti-tachyzoite activity (TI =2-64)

4-(3-Nitrophenyl)thiazol-2-ylhydrazone derivatives as antioxidants and selective hMAO-B inhibitors: synthesis, biological activity and computational analysis

A new series of 4-(3-nitrophenyl)thiazol-2-ylhydrazone derivatives were designed, synthesised, and evaluated to assess their inhibitory effect on the human monoamine oxidase (hMAO) A and B isoforms. Different (un)substituted (hetero)aromatic substituents were linked to N1 of the hydrazone in order to establish robust structure–activity relationships. The results of the biological testing demonstrated that the presence of the hydrazothiazole nucleus bearing at C4 a phenyl ring functionalised at the meta position with a nitro group represents an important pharmacophoric feature to obtain selective and reversible human MAO-B inhibition for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. In addition, the most potent and selective MAO-B inhibitors were evaluated in silico as potential cholinesterase (AChE/BuChE) inhibitors and in vitro for antioxidant activities. The results obtained from molecular modelling studies provided insight into the multiple interactions and structural requirements for the reported MAO inhibitory properties

Mechanical and microstructure analysis of AA6061 and Ti6AI4V fiber laser butt weld

Dissimilar metal welding involves the joining of two or more different pure metals or alloys, usually by melting and mixing and often with the addition of filler metal. There are several types of dissimilar metal welds including stainless steel, either as base metal or as filler metals. Dissimilar metal joints have distinctive features because of differences in the chemical composition of base metal and filler material. Their alloying elements will diffuse intensely during welding. The structures near the fusion line are very complex. Despite of great potentiality in aircraft and automotive industries, dissimilar joining of hybrid Al-Ti structures is often challenging because of the unavoidable formation of brittle intermetallic compounds, mixing of molten phases, and significant differences in material properties. In this work, dissimilar 2 mm thickness AA6000 and Ti6Al4V butt joints were produced by shifting an Yb fiber laser beam on the upper surface of the Ti sheet. Neither filler wire nor groove preparation was adopted. Different working conditions and seam shapes were assessed. The welds were characterized in terms of metallurgical and mechanical behaviors
