    Using Long-Run Restrictions to Investigate the Sources of Exchange Rate Fluctuations

    This paper makes use of long-run restrictions to identify macroeconomic shocks and evaluate their relative importance for exchange rate fluctuations. Unlike previous studies that employ a similar approach, I consider a large eight variable vector autoregressive system that includes short term interest rates rather than money stocks in order to help identify monetary policy shocks. Results for the U.S. and the U.K. show that monetary policy shocks and other macroeconomic shocks behave according to theory. However, monetary shocks account for only a small fraction of the variance of the real exchange rate. Instead, “taste shocks” that can be associated with the degree of trade openness, terms of trade, and current account appear to be the key factor driving the U.S.-U.K. real exchange rate.     Reproducing Business Cycle Features: How Important Is Nonlinearity Versus Multivariate Information?

    In this paper, we consider the ability of time-series models to generate simulated data that display the same business cycle features found in U.S. real GDP. Our analysis of a range of popular time-series models allows us to investigate the extent to which multivariate information can account for the apparent univariate evidence of nonlinear dynamics in GDP. We find that certain nonlinear specifications yield an improvement over linear models in reproducing business cycle features, even when multivariate information inherent in the unemployment rate, inflation, interest rates, and the components of GDP is taken into account.

    The effectiveness of adjunct mindfulness-based intervention in treatment of bipolar disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have been increasingly used as an adjunctive treatment to pharmacotherapy for a few psychiatric disorders. However, few studies have investigated the efficacy of MBIs in bipolar disorder (BD). METHODS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy of MBIs as an adjunctive treatment in BD. Major electronic databases were independently searched by two authors for controlled and uncontrolled studies which examined the effects of MBIs on psychiatric symptoms in subjects with BD. Data from original studies were synthesized by using a random effects model. RESULTS: Twelve trials were eligible for inclusion into current meta-analysis, including three controlled studies (n=132) and nine uncontrolled studies (n=142). In within-group analysis, MBIs significantly reduced depressive (7 studies, n=100, Hedges' g=0.58, p<0.001) and anxiety (4 studies, n=68, Hedges' g=0.34, p=0.043) symptoms, but not manic symptoms (6 studies, n=89, Hedges' g=0.09, p=0.488) and cognition (3 studies, n=43, Hedges' g=0.35, p=0.171), compared to baseline. In between-group analysis (intervention group versus waiting list group, all patients with BD), MBIs did not reduce depressive (3 studies, n=132, Hedges' g=0.46, p=0.315) or anxiety (3 studies, n=132, Hedges' g=0.33, p=0.578) symptoms. LIMITATIONS: Only three controlled trials compared MBIs to control conditions. CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis showed significantly beneficial effects on depressive and anxiety symptoms of BD patients in within-group analysis. However, this significance was not observed in comparison with the control groups. Further clinical trials are warranted to investigate the differences in the benefits of MBIs between treatment and control subjects

    Low peripheral levels of insulin growth factor-1 are associated with high incidence of delirium among elderly patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Introduction: Delirium, a serious condition observed in critically ill patients, clinically presents with impaired cognition and consciousness. The relationship between delirium and peripheral levels of insulin growth factor-1 (IGF-1) is unclear. Thus we conducted a meta-analysis to address this issue. Methods: Seven major electronic databases were searched from inception until October 2, 2017 to obtain relevant clinical variables to compare the difference in IGF-1 levels between delirious and non-delirious elderly in-patients. A random effects meta-analysis was conducted. Results: We studies 10 articles involving 294 delirious patients (mean age 73.0 years) and 604 non-delirious patients (mean age 76.9 years). We found that peripheral levels of IGF-1 in patients with delirium were significantly lower than in those without delirium (Hedges‘ g = −0.209, 95% confidence interval [CI] = −0.393 to −0.026, p = 0.025). Meta-regression analyses found that no variables such as percentage of cognitive impairment, mean age, and female proportion contribute to heterogeneity in terms of the entire population. Conclusions: Our data suggests that lower peripheral levels of IGF-1 could be associated with a higher incidence of delirium among elderly patients. Further prospective studies with larger sample sizes are needed to investigate the association between peripheral levels of IGF-1 and delirium

    Women with endometriosis have higher comorbidities: Analysis of domestic data in Taiwan

    AbstractEndometriosis, defined by the presence of viable extrauterine endometrial glands and stroma, can grow or bleed cyclically, and possesses characteristics including a destructive, invasive, and metastatic nature. Since endometriosis may result in pelvic inflammation, adhesion, chronic pain, and infertility, and can progress to biologically malignant tumors, it is a long-term major health issue in women of reproductive age. In this review, we analyze the Taiwan domestic research addressing associations between endometriosis and other diseases. Concerning malignant tumors, we identified four studies on the links between endometriosis and ovarian cancer, one on breast cancer, two on endometrial cancer, one on colorectal cancer, and one on other malignancies, as well as one on associations between endometriosis and irritable bowel syndrome, one on links with migraine headache, three on links with pelvic inflammatory diseases, four on links with infertility, four on links with obesity, four on links with chronic liver disease, four on links with rheumatoid arthritis, four on links with chronic renal disease, five on links with diabetes mellitus, and five on links with cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, etc.). The data available to date support that women with endometriosis might be at risk of some chronic illnesses and certain malignancies, although we consider the evidence for some comorbidities to be of low quality, for example, the association between colon cancer and adenomyosis/endometriosis. We still believe that the risk of comorbidity might be higher in women with endometriosis than that we supposed before. More research is needed to determine whether women with endometriosis are really at risk of these comorbidities

    The changing transmission mechanism of US monetary policy

    We examine the relative importance of the interest rate, exchange rate, and bank-lending channels for the transmission mechanism of monetary policy in the United States over the past fifty years. Our analysis is based on a structural vector autoregressive model that includes bank loans and uses sign restrictions to identify monetary policy shocks. Given these identified policy shocks, we quantify the relative importance of different transmission channels via counterfactual analysis. Our results suggest a nontrivial role for the bank-lending channel at the aggregate level, but its importance has been greatly diminished since the early 1980s. Despite the timing, we find no support for a link between this change in the transmission mechanism and the concurrent reduction in output volatility associated with the Great Moderation. There is, however, some evidence of a link to the reduction in inflation volatility occurring at the same time

    A conserved MST1/2–YAP axis mediates Hippo signaling during lung growth

    Hippo signaling is a critical player in controlling the growth of several tissues and organs in diverse species. The current model of Hippo signaling postulates a cascade of kinase activity initiated by the MST1/2 kinases in response to external stimuli. This leads to inactivation of the transcriptional coactivators, YAP/TAZ, due to their cytoplasmic retention and degradation that is correlated with YAP/TAZ phosphorylation. In most tissues examined, YAP plays a more dominant role than TAZ. Whether a conserved Hippo pathway is utilized during lung growth and development is unclear. In particular, the regulatory relationship between MST1/2 and YAP/TAZ in the lung remains controversial. By employing the Shh-Cre mouse line to efficiently inactivate genes in the lung epithelium, we show that loss of MST1/2 kinases in the epithelium can lead to neonatal lethality caused by lung defects. This is manifested by perturbation of lung epithelial cell proliferation and differentiation. These phenotypes are more severe than those produced by Nkx2.1-Cre, highlighting the effects of differential Cre activity on phenotypic outcomes. Importantly, expression of YAP targets is upregulated and the ratio of phospho-YAP to total YAP protein levels is reduced in Mst1/2-deficient lungs, all of which are consistent with a negative role of MST1/2 in controlling YAP function. This model gains further support from both in vivo and in vitro studies. Genetic removal of one allele of Yap or one copy of both Yap and Taz rescues neonatal lethality and lung phenotypes due to loss of Mst1/2. Moreover, knockdown of Yap in lung epithelial cell lines restores diminished alveolar marker expression caused by Mst1/2 inactivation. These results demonstrate that MST1/2 inhibit YAP/TAZ activity and establish a conserved MST1/2-YAP axis in coordinating lung growth during development
