    Get PDF
At this writing (Fall 2011), two-thirds of the faculty in higher education are contingent part-time or full-time. Only one-third of the faculty is tenured or on the tenure-track. This selected, annotated bibliography is organized by year of publication, from 1977 to 2010. (An earlier version was published in 2008.) It is the purpose of this publication to facilitate understanding of the meaning and implications of this major change in the structure of higher education. The annotations in the bibliography were written from the perspective of a part-time faculty member, unlike most of the literature, which is written from a management perspective

The applicability of Raman spectroscopy for estimation of interfaces thickness in the AlN/GaN superlattices

AbstractPolar optical phonons in quaternary nitride-based superlattices have been investigated in the framework of the dielectric continuum model. In the considered systems, the superlattice period consisted of two main GaN and AlN layers and two interstitial Al0.5Ga0.5N layers. Such a structure simulates binary superlattices with diffuse interfaces. The presence of the finite thickness interface layers was shown to give rise to appearance of several low-intensity additional phonon modes active in Raman scattering; frequency splitting of such modes is sensitive to relative thickness of intermediate layers. The fundamental Raman-intense polar phonon modes were also stated to be independent on the interface thickness, and these modes were very sensitive to the main layer thicknesses

The paper deals with the spiritual and moral foundations of the formation of managerial culture among future leaders of educational institutions. Poor management is usually about lack of morality, self-discipline, inability to think critically, shortsightedness and narrow-mindedness; rejects from spirituality, from conscientious attitude to culture, to oneself, from the pursuit of self-improvement. In education, thinking is encouraged, suggesting one correct decision, all attention is focused on physical and intellectual development; spirituality and morality are ignored, while ethics, morality and culture of the individual are forgotten, which causes a further crisis of spirituality in society, the fall of morality. A framework was proposed that describes how the personal spiritual beliefs of a top level leader operate in strategic decision making like a schema to filter and frame information. This function was mediated by the leader’s constructive development and meta- belief and moderated by the organizational context and leadership style. The study has been done by the questioner among 120 mangers to evaluate their spiritual and moral foundations. In this regard, the appeal to traditional values and systems related to world religions has been determined. In this context, it is about the tools that are found in Buddhism as a system of ethical values, about the possibilities of realizing spiritual efforts based on traditions and moral life standards. The formation of the spiritual and moral foundations of the management culture among future managers of the education system is realized in the process of purposeful training of habits and habits of spiritual and moral behavior. In the article, a secular approach to the formation of managerial culture among future leaders of educational institutions is based on the appeal to the spiritual and moral values of Buddhism. These values have a holistic character and are the parts of a system of ethical norms for education of a person, shaping the elite of "agents of change" aimed at designing a new quality in the spiritual and moral sphere. Phantoms of organs and biological systems are widely used for verification of radioisotope protocols. The construction and operation of the heart and circulation phantom is described. The present model was designed for experimental testing of multi-detector radiometric system, prototype of which was designed in Ural Federal University as an extension and alternative to Anger camera and single-photon-emission tomography radionuclide diagnostics. The model represents vital dynamic properties of the single-chamber pulsing heart and circulation, featuring adjustable heart rate, blood volume, ejection fraction and flowrate. The trial experiments were performed with 99m Tc-pertechnetate to obtain time-activity curves and the ejection fraction was thus measured basing on first-pass radio angiography technique. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd

Reduced representation sequencing in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.): domestication genomics and rapid gene identification

Recent advances in barley genomics made it feasible to explore genetic diversity in a large- genome cereal and its wild relative on an unprecedented scale. Reduction of the barley genome complexity by reduced representation sequencing is a cost-efficient approach to survey genetic diversity in multiple genotypes in the context of adaptation and domestication. Moreover, reduced representation sequencing generates genome-wide panels of polymorphisms, thus enabling the application of mapping-by-sequencing approaches in cereals, which has been gaining ground as a rapid method to fine-map candidate genes underlying agronomic traits. In the first part of this study, I focused on understanding the genetic architecture of the barley domestication syndrome and underlying processes modulating diversity in wild and domesticated forms. To this end, I interrogated ~330,000 SNPs in a set of 433 diverse wild and cultivated barley genotypes using a custom designed reduced representation sequencing assay. The SNPs originated from ~ 12,800 loci, enriched for homologs of flowering time, of meristem and inflorescence development, and of domestication-related genes. The diversity analysis identified an unexpectedly high rate of admixture in both wild and domesticated forms, with the latter case predominantly restricted to the landrace genotypes. I found evidence of a severe domestication bottleneck resulting in loss of genetic diversity and maintenance of extended haplotype blocks in strong linkage disequilibrium. Selection scans identified multiple targets of selection related to the crucial domestication syndrome traits. For examples, several tests identified a sweep that occurred around the genes involved in the non-brittle rachis phenotype. The signatures of selection were found in the homologs of genes implicated in the regulation of photoperiodic flowering, gibberellin synthesis and seed dormancy. This map of barley genetic variation will inform future evolutionary and genome-wide association studies and support the advancement of barley breeding. In the second chapter, I employed another reduced representation sequencing approach, the whole-exome sequencing, in combination with the mapping-by-sequencing algorithm. Using this toolbox, I identified the red/far-red light photoreceptor HvPHYTOCHROME C (HvPHYC), carrying a mutation in a conserved region of the GAF domain, as a candidate underlying the early maturity 5 (eam5) locus in barley. I fine-mapped the gene using the SHOREmap algorithm applied on the whole-exome capture data from bulked early flowering segregants derived from a backcross of the Bowman(eam5) 5introgression line. Phytochromes play an important role in light signaling and photoperiodic control of flowering time in plants. Here, I show that the eam5 interacts with the photoperiod response gene PHOTOPERIOD-H1 (Ppd-H1) to accelerate flowering under non-inductive short days. The results accompanying my study suggest that HvPHYC participates in the transmission of light signals to the circadian clock and thus modulates light-dependent processes such as photoperiodic regulation of flowering. The diversity analysis indicates enrichment of the HvPHYC-eam5 allele in barley cultivars from Japan despite the strong effect of this mutation on the barley clock. This invites further research into comparing physiological effects and the overall significance of the circadian clock on plant adaptation
