Influences on Early Twentieth Century Bungalow Housing in Lincoln, Nebraska

    Get PDF
Housing publications of the Bungalow era (1900 to 1930) containing over 1200 illustrated Bungalows and derivations, were compared with 717 photographed representatives in Lincoln, Nebraska. These samples were categorized by 10 types first described by writer Henry Saylor (1911). Interpretations of the style by local builders and architects in Lincoln, Nebraska, were traced to house pattern books, national and local publications, and state and city records, to determine how the style evolved locally. The search led to regional design features of the Bungalow, nearly square forms, and composite types. Advisor: Mabel C. Skjelver. File = 24 M

MicroRNA Expression in Selected Carcinomas of the Gastrointestinal Tract

    Get PDF
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) comprise a recently discovered class of small, 18–25 nucleotide, noncoding RNA sequences that regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional level by binding to and inhibiting the translation of target messenger RNAs (mRNAs). Characteristic patterns of miRNA expression have been described in several malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract, and numerous investigators have demonstrated interactions between specific miRNA species and target oncogenes or tumor-suppressor genes. It is clear that miRNAs play an important role in regulating expression of a number of genes involved in gastrointestinal carcinogenesis, and, thus, these molecules may represent either diagnostic markers of, or therapeutic targets for, some types of malignancy. This paper summarizes the literature regarding miRNA expression in carcinomas of the colon, pancreas, and liver and discusses some of the mechanisms by which these molecules participate in gastrointestinal oncogenesis

    Le istituzioni ecclesiastiche (secc. XI-XV)

The Presence of Ruperto de Deutz in Quevedo’s Work, «Isla de los Monopantos»

Between the lines of the «Isla de los Monopantos», libel number XXXIX included by Francisco de Quevedo in his work La hora de todos, we can find a quote that seems extracted from St Jerome’s «Commentary on Isaiah»; this interpretation was pondered after the reading of the second chapter of the Política de Dios, in which Quevedo exhibits a similar re-elaborated version to the passages of St Jerome. This article proposes its confutation; starting from the analysis of the quote, we assert Ruperto of Deutz as the direct influence of Quevedo’s transcript, the same reference source that was used by the author for the writing of Homilía a la Santísima Trinidad and Sobre las palabras que dijo Christo á su santísima Madre en las bodas de Caná de Galilea. Lastly, a further contribution is determined by the Annals of Jacques Salian, vastly handled by Quevedo during his literary activity; in these compilations which include Ruperto’s works, it’s possible to discover crucial passages for the support of this analysis

Glucocorticoid receptor binding characteristics in rat genetic models of hypertension and in normal subjects of known glucocorticoid receptor genotype

The evidence of a familial component in the development of hypertension has been discussed in its socio-economical, genetical and hormonal aspects. Of the endocrine influences, the activity of the adrenal cortex and the way in which both mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids interact with their target tissues has been evaluated. It has been suggested that this interaction may vary in a genetically determined manner. Recent studies suggested that the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) is associated with differences of blood pressure. Subjects from the Ladywell district of Edinburgh who were homozygous for one GR genotype had higher blood pressure than those homozygous for the other. The hypothesis that the receptor genotype might be associated with phenotypic differences in glucocorticoid responsiveness, which in turn could contribute to the development of hypertension, was drawn. This hypothesis has been investigated in strains of rat prone to develop hypertension and in a group of normotensive male subjects characterised for GR RFLP genotype. The investigation first required the adaptation, validation and use of a number of biochemical and cell biology techniques. A new method of measuring glucocorticoid potency has been developed, based on the ability of glucocorticoids to inhibit the translation of the lysozyme gene. In addition, a large body of information on variables concerned with electrolyte homeostasis and the control of intermediary metabolism were collected. Many of the variables correlated independently of the receptor polymorphism. The results suggested a complex interaction of mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid functions in the pathogenesis of hypertension. In conclusion, studies in rats with genetic hypertension and in patients strongly indicate that glucocorticoid sensitivity may be a contributory factor in essential hypertension. If this is the case, then hypertension - or predisposition to hypertension - should be associated with a constellation of glucocorticoid sensitivity-related changes. If sensitivity is impaired, mineralocorticoid-like changes may result. If sensitivity is increased, glucocorticoid-dependant variables should change. Although neither hypothesis has been absolutely established by the experiments described in this thesis, they have provided some valuable guidelines for future studies. Per cacciar la malinconia delle femine: immaginazione e malattia d’amore nel Decameron di Boccaccio

The conceptions of lovesickness and of its remedies that emerge in the Decameron result from a medical tradition that in previous centuries was assimilated by the Latin culture. The case of the Decameron is particularly interesting because this work was composed during the Black Death epidemic, between 1348 and 1354. Boccaccio’s Decameron seems to be situated in a tension between two diseases: the black plague, from which the brigata tries to escape, and lovesickness. It is quite significant that Boccaccio dedicated his work to women who love and need the comfort of literature, thereby addressing a new ideal of noble women, not based on their wealth, but on their intelligence and sensitivity. Women are often victims of their melancholy, because they have no opportunity to distract themselves, being confined to the private space of their rooms. Boccaccio describes women as being subject to passion and illness, so that the lovesickness cases described in the Decameron strongly allude to the discrimination of women and to the oppression they had to endure. An explicative example that testifies to the preeminent role that the medical culture played is Decameron X, 7, in which Lisa, the daughter of an apothecary, strangely cannot be healed by pharmacological remedies that her father knows, and not a single physician can help to heal her lovesickness. The case of Lisa can be interpreted as an exemplum: a woman afflicted by the same sickness as Lisa could understand how to behave by means of reading of this novella. Moreover, this paper will demonstrate that a useful outline of Lisa’s symptomatology can be found in Dino del Garbo’s commentary on Guido Cavalcanti’s poem Donna me prega
