    Effect of amide-based compounds on the combustion characteristics of composite solid rocket propellants

    Oxamide (OXA) and azodicarbonamide (ADA) are among the known burning rate suppressants used in composite solid rocket propellants. Much research has been carried out to understand mechanism of suppression but literature about the action of OXA and ADA on the combustion characteristics of propellant is still scarce. Here, a systematic study on coolant-based propellants has been undertaken spanning from thermal analyses of ingredients to a variety of burning processes of the corresponding propellants. Thermal gravimetric analysis and differential thermal analysis on individual coolants are carried out to study their behaviour with temperature. It was noticed that the thermal decomposition of OXA exhibits only endothermic effects, whereas that of ADA presents both endothermic and exothermic effects. Successive experiments on solid propellant looking at burning rate characterization, condensed combustion product collection and visualization, pressure deflagration limit and thermochemical analysis gave a greater insight and enabled better understanding of the action of coolants during combustion. It is proposed that OXA and ADA are acting on both the condensed and gas phases. Also, the nature of coolant is a key parameter, which affects the burning rate pressure index. Increase of agglomerate size and of pressure deflagration limit was obtained in the coolant-based propellants, confirming the trend given in the literature.     Role of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging in local complications of acute pancreatitis

    Acute pancreatitis (AP) represents a pancreas inflammation of sudden onset that can present different degrees of severity. AP is a frequent cause of acute abdomen and its complications are still a cause of death. Biliary calculosis and alcohol abuse are the most frequent cause of AP. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are not necessary for the diagnosis of AP but they are fundamental tools for the identification of the cause, degree severity and AP complications. AP severity assessment is in fact one of the most important issue in disease management. Contrast-enhanced CT is preferred in the emergency setting and is considered the gold standard in patients with AP. MRI is comparable to CT for the diagnosis of AP but requires much more time so it is not usually chosen in the emergency scenario. Complications of AP can be distinguished in localized and generalized. Among the localized complications, we can identify: acute peripancreatic fluid collections (APFC), pseudocysts, acute necrotic collections (ANC), walled off pancreatic necrosis (WOPN), venous thrombosis, pseudoaneurysms and haemorrhage. Multiple organ failure syndrome (MOFS) and sepsis are possible generalized complications of AP. In this review, we focus on CT and MRI findings in local complications of AP and when and how to perform CT and MRI. We paid also attention to recent developments in diagnostic classification of AP complications

    Prostate Artery Embolization as Minimally Invasive Treatment for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: An Updated Systematic Review

    Background/Objectives: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) has a significant impact on the quality of life of symptomatic patients. In patients manifesting lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), prostatic arterial embolization (PAE) has become a topic of interest in recent years. The purpose of this systematic review is to analyze and review techniques and clinical outcomes of patients who underwent endovascular treatment of BPH, with a special focus on the comparison of surgical and endovascular procedures. Methods: Through the major scientific databases, 1225 articles were selected from the initial research utilizing specific keywords and medical subject headings. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria established for selecting relevant studies for our purposes, the systematic analysis of the literature was conducted on a total of seven articles. Results: We collected data on 718 male patients (408 patients underwent PAE and 310 received TURP). The technical success rate varied from 86% to 100% for TAE and was 100% for TURP. During a 12-month follow-up period, both PAE and TURP were comparable on the reduction in IPSS and QoL questionnaire, while TURP showed significant improvements in Qmax and in the reduction in prostate volume. Length and cost of hospitalization were lower for PAE. Complication and adverse events rates were higher in the TURP group rather than in the PAE group (60.6% vs. 35.5%). Conclusions: Prostatic artery embolization represents an emerging minimally invasive procedure for BPH. According to previously released clinical studies, quality-of-life and urological symptom scores of the PAE group were comparable to those of the TURP group. Our research strengthens the evidence supporting the effectiveness and safety of PAE as a therapy for LUTS related to BPH

    Histopathologic and mr imaging appearance of spontaneous and radiation-induced necrosis in uveal melanomas: Initial results

    Necrosis in uveal melanomas can be spontaneous or induced by radiotherapy. The purpose of our study was to compare the histopathologic and MRI findings of radiation-induced necrosis of a group of proton beam-irradiated uveal melanomas with those of spontaneous necrosis of a control group of patients undergoing primary enucleation. 11 uveal melanomas who had undergone proton beam radiotherapy, MRI and secondary enucleation, and a control group of 15 untreated uveal melanomas who had undergone MRI and primary enucleation were retrospectively identi-fied. Within the irradiated and nonirradiated group, 7 and 6 eyes with histological evidence of necrosis respectively, were furtherly selected for the final analysis; the appearance of necrosis was assessed at histopathologic examination and MRI. Irradiated melanomas showed a higher degree of necrosis as compared with nonirradiated tumors. Irradiated and nonirradiated lesions differed based on the appearance and distribution of necrosis. Irradiated tumors showed large necrotic foci, sharply demarcated from the viable neoplastic tissue; nonirradiated tumors demonstrated small, distinct foci of necrosis. Radiation-induced necrosis, more pigmented than surrounding viable tumor, displayed high signal intensity on T1-weighted and low signal intensity on T2-weighted images. The hemorrhagic/coagulative necrosis, more prevalent in nonirradiated tumors (4 out of 6 vs. 1 out of 7 cases), appeared hyperintense on T2-weighted and hypointense on T1-weighted images. Our study boosts the capability to recognize radiation-induced alterations in uveal melanomas at MRI and may improve the accuracy of radiologists in the evaluation of follow-up MR examination after radiotherapy

    Genomic Variation across a Clinical Cryptococcus Population Linked to Disease Outcome.

    Cryptococcus neoformans is the causative agent of cryptococcosis, a disease with poor patient outcomes that accounts for approximately 180,000 deaths each year. Patient outcomes may be impacted by the underlying genetics of the infecting isolate; however, our current understanding of how genetic diversity contributes to clinical outcomes is limited. Here, we leverage clinical, in vitro growth and genomic data for 284 C. neoformans isolates to identify clinically relevant pathogen variants within a population of clinical isolates from patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated cryptococcosis in Malawi. Through a genome-wide association study (GWAS) approach, we identify variants associated with the fungal burden and the growth rate. We also find both small and large-scale variation, including aneuploidy, associated with alternate growth phenotypes, which may impact the course of infection. Genes impacted by these variants are involved in transcriptional regulation, signal transduction, glycosylation, sugar transport, and glycolysis. We show that growth within the central nervous system (CNS) is reliant upon glycolysis in an animal model and likely impacts patient mortality, as the CNS yeast burden likely modulates patient outcome. Additionally, we find that genes with roles in sugar transport are enriched in regions under selection in specific lineages of this clinical population. Further, we demonstrate that genomic variants in two genes identified by GWAS impact virulence in animal models. Our approach identifies links between the genetic variation in C. neoformans and clinically relevant phenotypes and animal model pathogenesis, thereby shedding light on specific survival mechanisms within the CNS and identifying the pathways involved in yeast persistence. IMPORTANCE Infection outcomes for cryptococcosis, most commonly caused by C. neoformans, are influenced by host immune responses as well as by host and pathogen genetics. Infecting yeast isolates are genetically diverse; however, we lack a deep understanding of how this diversity impacts patient outcomes. To better understand both clinical isolate diversity and how diversity contributes to infection outcomes, we utilize a large collection of clinical C. neoformans samples that were isolated from patients enrolled in a clinical trial across 3 hospitals in Malawi. By combining whole-genome sequence data, clinical data, and in vitro growth data, we utilize genome-wide association approaches to examine the genetic basis of virulence. Genes with significant associations display virulence attributes in both murine and rabbit models, demonstrating that our approach can identify potential links between genetic variants and patho-biologically significant phenotypes

    Enhancing neuroimaging genetics through meta-analysis for Tourette syndrome (ENIGMA-TS): A worldwide platform for collaboration

    Tourette syndrome (TS) is characterized by multiple motor and vocal tics, and high-comorbidity rates with other neuropsychiatric disorders. Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), major depressive disorder (MDD), and anxiety disorders (AXDs) are among the most prevalent TS comorbidities. To date, studies on TS brain structure and function have been limited in size with efforts mostly fragmented. This leads to low-statistical power, discordant results due to differences in approaches, and hinders the ability to stratify patients according to clinical parameters and investigate comorbidity patterns. Here, we present the scientific premise, perspectives, and key goals that have motivated the establishment of the Enhancing Neuroimaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis for TS (ENIGMA-TS) working group. The ENIGMA-TS working group is an international collaborative effort bringing together a large network of investigators who aim to understand brain structure and function in TS and dissect the underlying neurobiology that leads to observed comorbidity patterns and clinical heterogeneity. Previously collected TS neuroimaging data will be analyzed jointly and integrated with TS genomic data, as well as equivalently large and already existing studies of highly comorbid OCD, ADHD, ASD, MDD, and AXD. Our work highlights the power of collaborative efforts and transdiagnostic approaches, and points to the existence of different TS subtypes. ENIGMA-TS will offer large-scale, high-powered studies that will lead to important insights toward understanding brain structure and function and genetic effects in TS and related disorders, and the identification of biomarkers that could help inform improved clinical practice

    Two new cocrystalline compounds, (Hen)(H2L2)2/3H2O(2)and(Him)(H3L3)2/3H2O (2) and (Him)(H3L3)2H2O (8), were prepared by the reaction of 5-(2-(4-chlorophenyl)hydrazono)pyrimidine-2,4,6(1H,3H,5H)-trione (H3L2) and the sodium salt of 2-(2-(2,4,6-trioxotetrahydropyrimidin-5(2H)-ylidene)hydrazinyl)benzenesulfonic acid (H4L3), [Na(H3L3)(m-H2O)(H2O)2]2 (1) with protonated ethylenediamine (Hen) and imidazole (Him), respectively. By using 5-(2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)hydrazono)pyrimidine-2,4,6(1H,3H,5H)-trione (H4L1) and 1, several known CuII, CoII, CoII/III and new AgI complexes, [Cu(H2L1)(H2O)(im)]3H2O(3),[Co(H2O)6]−[Co(H2L1)2]23H2O (3), [Co(H2O)6]- [Co(H2L1)2]28H2O (4), [Co(H2L3)(im)3] (5), [Cu(H2L3)(im)2]H2O(6),[Ag(H2O)(m−H3L3)]n(7)and[Co(H2O)6]−[H3L3]2H2O (6), [Ag(H2O)(m-H3L3)]n (7) and [Co(H2O)6]- [H3L3]28H2O (9), were also prepared in order to study their DNA and BSA binding, anticancer and antimicrobial properties. The complexes are able to interact with DNA and BSA with high binding constant values. In particular, complex 4 strongly intercalates DNA and binds BSA. The antimicrobial activity of all compounds, determined against a panel of reference bacterial and fungal strains, indicates that only 2 and 7 possess antimicrobial activity. The same compounds 2 and 7 show a pronounced antiproliferative activity against the human tumor cell lines A375, MDA-MB 231 and HCT116

    The employment of burning rate suppressants in the solid rocket propellant formulation is long known. Different research activities have been conducted to well understand the mechanism of suppression, but literature about the action of oxamide (OXA) and azodicarbonamide (ADA) on the thermal decomposition of composite propellant is still scarce. The focus of this study is on investigating the effect of burning rate suppressants on the thermal behavior and decomposition kinetics of composite solid propellants. Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and differential thermal analysis have been used to identify the changes in the thermal and kinetic behaviors of coolant-based propellants. Two main decomposition stages were observed. It was found that OXA played an inhibition effect on both stages, whereas the ADA acts as a catalyst in the first stage and as coolant in the second one. The activation energy dependent on the conversion rate was estimated by two model-free integral methods: Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) based on the TG data obtained at different heating rates.
