    Evaluation of the use of on-board spacecraft energy storage for electric propulsion missions

    On-board spacecraft energy storage represents an under utilized resource for some types of missions that also benefit from using relatively high specific impulse capability of electric propulsion. This resource can provide an appreciable fraction of the power required for operating the electric propulsion subsystem in some missions. The most probable mission requirement for utilization of this energy is that of geostationary satellites which have secondary batteries for operating at high power levels during eclipse. The study summarized in this report selected four examples of missions that could benefit from use of electric propulsion and on-board energy storage. Engineering analyses were performed to evaluate the mass saved and economic benefit expected when electric propulsion and on-board batteries perform some propulsion maneuvers that would conventionally be provided by chemical propulsion. For a given payload mass in geosynchronous orbit, use of electric propulsion in this manner typically provides a 10% reduction in spacecraft mass

    The objective of this study was to evaluate commercially available sources of supplemental protein in diets for growing and finishing lambs. Supplements were selected to differ in protein in diets for growing and finishing lambs. Supplements were selected to differ in protein solubility and amino acid profile and were expected to be degraded at different rates in the rumen to furnish protein post-ruminally varying in dietary and bacterial origin. If the principles concerning these parameters reported by other investigators would be applicable, response in terms of growth and feed utilization would be a measure of the value of the supplements for productive purposes

    Oceanic stochastic parametrizations in a seasonal forecast system

    We study the impact of three stochastic parametrizations in the ocean component of a coupled model, on forecast reliability over seasonal timescales. The relative impacts of these schemes upon the ocean mean state and ensemble spread are analyzed. The oceanic variability induced by the atmospheric forcing of the coupled system is, in most regions, the major source of ensemble spread. The largest impact on spread and bias came from the Stochastically Perturbed Parametrization Tendency (SPPT) scheme - which has proven particularly effective in the atmosphere. The key regions affected are eddy-active regions, namely the western boundary currents and the Southern Ocean. However, unlike its impact in the atmosphere, SPPT in the ocean did not result in a significant decrease in forecast error. Whilst there are good grounds for implementing stochastic schemes in ocean models, our results suggest that they will have to be more sophisticated. Some suggestions for next-generation stochastic schemes are made.Comment: 24 pages, 3 figure

    Functional biases in GRB's spectral parameter correlations

    Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) show evidence of different spectral shapes, light curves, duration, host galaxies and they explode within a wide redshift range. However, the most of them seems to follow very tight correlations among some observed quantities relating to their energetic. If true, these correlations have significant implications on burst physics, giving constraints on theoretical models. Moreover, several suggestions have been made to use these correlations in order to calibrate GRBs as standard candles and to constrain the cosmological parameters. We investigate the cosmological relation between low energy α\alpha index in GRBs prompt spectra and the redshift zz. We present a statistical analysis of the relation between the total isotropic energy EisoE_{iso} and the peak energy EpE_p (also known as Amati relation) in GRBs spectra searching for possible functional biases. Possible implications on the EisoE_{iso} vs EpE_p relation of the α\alpha vs (1+z)(1+z) correlation are evaluated. We used MonteCarlo simulations and the boostrap method to evaluate how large are the effects of functional biases on the EisoE_{iso} vs EpE_p. We show that high values of the linear correlation coefficent, up to about 0.8, in the EisoE_{iso} vs EpE_p relation are obtained for random generated samples of GRBs, confirming the relevance of functional biases. We examined the extent to which practice members’ perceptions of how well they organized to deliver care consistent with the CCM were associated with their patients’ perceptions of the chronic illness care they have received. Methods: Analysis of baseline measures from a cluster randomized controlled trial testing a practice facilitation intervention to implement the CCM in small, community-based primary care practices. All practice “members” (i.e., physician providers, non-physician providers, and staff) completed the Assessment of Chronic Illness Care (ACIC) survey and adult patients with 1 or more chronic illnesses completed the Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care (PACIC) questionnaire. Results: Two sets of hierarchical linear regression models accounting for nesting of practice members (N = 283) and patients (N = 1,769) within 39 practices assessed the association between practice member perspectives of CCM implementation (ACIC scores) and patients’ perspectives of CCM (PACIC). ACIC summary score was not significantly associated with PACIC summary score or most of PACIC subscale scores, but four of the ACIC subscales were consistently associated with PACIC summary score and the majority of PACIC subscale scores after controlling for patient characteristics. The magnitude of the coefficients, however, indicates that the level of association is weak. Conclusions: The ACIC and PACIC scales appear to provide complementary and relatively unique assessments of how well clinical services are aligned with the CCM.     Decolonising public service television in Aotearoa New Zealand: telling better stories about Indigenous rurality

    (c) The Author/s 2022AM accepted for publication in "Media, culture and society" first published online 25 October 2022.In settler-colonial countries like Aotearoa New Zealand, television programmes about rurality are fundamentally entwined with the nation’s colonial history, but how this context impacts on locally made, public service television content and production is seldom examined. Utilising data collected from interviews with programme makers and a novel bi-cultural friendship pair methodology, we examine how a high-rating mainstream programme, Country Calendar, conceptualises and delivers stories about Indigenous Māori and consider the extent to which these stories represent a decolonising of television narratives about rurality. The findings highlight the importance of incorporating Indigenous voices and values, the impact of structural limitations and staffing constraints on public service television’s decolonising aspirations, and challenges reconciling settler-colonialism with the show’s well-established ‘rosy glow’. While rural media are often overlooked by communication scholars, our study demonstrates the contributions they might make to the larger task of decolonising storytelling about national identity.fals
