Semidiurnal (M2, S2, N2 and K2), diurnal (K1,O1 and P1) and quarter-diurnal (M4, MN4 and MS4) barotropic tides over the North Patagonian Gulfs of Argentina: San Matías, (SMG), Nuevo (NG) and San José (SJG) are examined using a regional numerical model. Detailed comparison of computed elevations and currents with those obtained from harmonic analysis of few long-term observational records showed good agreement. A large amplification of all semidiurnal waves is recorded when they cross SMG mouth. Most of the tidal energy coming from the south at this frequency dissipates to the northeast of Valdés Península, where the largest tidal currents are located. While M2 currents (up to 2–2.5 m/s) are dominant, there are large S2 and N2 currents and locally intensified diurnal currents (5–10 cm/s) in some outer shelf locations. At difference with the semidiurnal and diurnal tides the higher harmonics M4, MS4 and MN4 develop a large amplification inside the NG. The model revealed a complex field of tidal residual currents. The intensity of such currents in some locations are of the same order of magnitude as those generated by winds or offshore forcing. We have identified three main patterns of residual circulation: regional coastal currents and gulf-wide gyres; inlet eddies and, topographic eddies. Vorticity balances and sensitivity experiments indicate that non-linear advection and bottom topography are the key mechanisms involved in the generation of these residual structures.Fil: Tonini, Mariano Hernan. The Burdwood Bank Circulation

    Get PDF
A suite of high-resolution numerical simulations characterizes the oceanic circulation in the Burdwood Bank, a shallow seamount located in the northeastern end of the Drake Passage. Model analysis shows energetic upwelling and mixing uplifting deep and benthic waters into the photic layer. Tides and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current are the primary drivers of the bank's circulation. Tidal forcing is the main driver for the entrainment of deep waters into the upper layers of the bank and local wind forcing for the detrainment of these waters into the deep ocean. Passive tracer diagnostics suggest that the dynamical processes triggered by the Burdwood Bank could have a significant impact on local ecosystems and the biogeochemical balance of the southwestern Atlantic region, which is one of the most fertile portions of the Southern Ocean. Model results are robust—they are reproduced in a wide array of model configurations—but there is insufficient observational evidence to corroborate them. Satellite color imagery does not show substantial chlorophyll blooms in this region but it shows strong phytoplankton plumes emanating from the bank. There are several potential explanations for the chlorophyll deficit, including lack of light due to persistent cloud cover, deep mixing layers, fast ocean currents, and the likelihood that blooms, while extant, might not develop on the surface. None of these possibilities can be confirmed at this stage.Fil: Matano, Ricardo P.. State University of Oregon; Estados UnidosFil: Palma, Elbio Daniel.

Abstract: The following dissertation has the objective of introducing sustainability in rehabilitation and analysing the benefits of such, in a country facing an economic crisis. It starts by making an historical framework of rehabilitation and a legal fra mework of sustainable development and construction. The typical Lower Alentejo construction is analysed, region in which this dissertation is developed, and in which the building used as a case study for this dissertation is located. The traditional Lower Alentejo construction is described. The solutions portrayed in the case study have been simulated in programs such as Energy Plus and Design Builder, and have been chosen due to the fact that they do not change drastically the type of construction and also because of their easiness to be applied. Solutions such as changing equipment, lighting, frames, windows and introducing exterior light shades given the high solar incidence of the region have been analysed. Such solutions succeed in reducing electrical consumption, reducing internal energy gains and also reducing Carbon Dioxide emissions to the atmosphere (improvement in 50% to 68% with a return on investment in 6 years). Three other solutions are recommended, two of them using solar energy to generate electricity and to heat water, being the third solution a system that reutilizes the rain water and uses it to water the plants (return on investment in 16, 9 and 7 years). This dissertation ends by analysing the benefits of all the solutions mentioned above, not only for the case study but for all other buildings that may adopt such solutions. Even though the initial investment is something to be aware of, the fact is that these solutions allow for a total return of the investment in a medium/long period of time

Albendazole Solid Dispersions: Influence of Dissolution Medium Composition on In Vitro Drug Release

    Get PDF
The rate-limiting step to drug absorption is often dissolution from the dosage form, especially for poorly soluble com-pounds. Two possibilities for improving the dissolution of these drugs are to increase the available surface area and to im-prove their apparent solubilities under physiologically relevant conditions with surfactants as wetting agents. Albendazole (ABZ), one of the most effective broad-spectrum antihelminthic agents, has a very low aqueous solubility, which leads to an erratic availability. Solid dispersions (SD) with different amounts of carriers (P188 and PEG6000) were formulated to improve the ABZ dissolution rate. When the dissolution test is used to infer biopharmaceutical properties of the dosage form, it is es-sential that the method simulates the gastrointestinal conditions. The objective of this study was to examine the applicabil-ity of different dissolution media to the evaluation of ABZ and ABZ-SD dissolution rates. Dissolution profiles were performed by the official method (0.1 N HCl) and Simulated Gastric Fluid modified with a surfactant. Wetting was evaluated through the determination of surface tension and contact angle of the solutions. The dissolution rate of ABZ was clearly affected by the variables assessed in this study. These results have implications in the design of physiologically based dissolution media.Fil: González Vidal, Noelia Luján. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas; Argentina.
