The Luxembourg database of trichothecene type B F. graminearum and F. culmorum producers
Data specific to 486 strains belonging to Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium culmorum were manually collected from Luxembourg field monitoring campaigns between the year 2007 ad 2013. It is of interest to store such data in a web-enabled advanced database to help in epidemiological studies. Hence, we describe the design and development of a Fusarium database added to the Luxembourg Microbial Culture Collection (LuxMCC\u2122) web interface at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST). The database has three main features: (1) filter search, (2) detailed viewer of isolate information, and (3) excel export function of the dataset. Information on fungal strains includes genetic chemotypes, data on selected agronomic factors and crop management issues with geographic localization. The database constitutes a rich source of data for addressing epidemiological issues related to these two species. It will be regularly updated with improved features for advancement and utility
âSupposing that truth is a woman, what then?â The Lie Detector, The Love Machine and the Logic of Fantasy
One of the consequences of the public outcry over the 1929 St Valentineâs Day massacre was the establishment of a Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory at Northwestern University. The photogenic âLie Detector Manâ, Leonarde Keeler, was the Laboratoryâs poster boy and his instrument the jewel in the crown of forensic science. The press often depicted Keeler gazing at a female suspect attached to his âsweat boxâ; a galvanometer electrode in her hand, a sphygmomanometer cuff on her arm and a rubber pneumograph tube strapped across her breasts. Keelerâs fascination with the deceptive charms of the female body was one he shared with his fellow lie detector pioneers, all of whom met their wives â and in William Marstonâs case his mistress too â through their engagement with the instrument. Marston employed his own âLove Meterâ, as the press dubbed it, to prove that âbrunettes react far more violently to amatory stimuli than blondesâ. In this paper I draw on the psychoanalytic concepts of fantasy and pleasure to argue that the female body played a pivotal role in establishing the lie detectorâs reputation as an infallible and benign mechanical technology of truth
Effect of unloading brace treatment on pain and function in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis: the ROTOR randomized clinical trial
Evidence is still inconclusive for the benefits of bracing in patients with knee osteoarthritis. To assess the effect of REBEL RELIEVER unloading knee brace in conservative treatment of knee osteoarthritis, a randomized controlled trial was conducted in 67 patients with symptomatic medial knee osteoarthritis, who randomly received 6-week treatment with either REBEL RELIVER unloading knee brace + usual care (Brace group, N = 32) or usual care alone (Control group, N = 35). Primary outcome was the global last 24h-pain relief (100-mm visual analogic scale [VAS]) at 6 weeks. Secondary endpoints included pain on motion (100-mm VAS), function (Lequesne index), safety and observance. At 6 weeks, mean [SD] last 24h-pain decreased significantly more in Brace group versus Control group (-41.35 [3.37] vs -15.37 [3.23], difference - 25.98, 95% CI - 41.64 to - 10.33, P < 0.0001). Higher mean [SD] pain on motion decrease (-51.91 [3.49] vs - 19.91 [3.34], difference - 32.01, 95% CI - 48.21 to - 15.80, P < 0.0001) and better improvement of Lequesne index score (-5.8 [0.5] vs - 2.3 [0.5], difference - 3.5, 95% CI-5.0 to - 2.0, P < 0.0001) were observed in Brace group. Safety and observance to the brace were excellent. The additive clinical benefit of wearing REBEL RELIEVER unloading knee brace was demonstrated in knee osteoarthritis patients
