This report presents the characterization of Open Access and APC payments for 157 thousand publications made by institutions Colombian. This is the first study done on Colombia, with the observed production amplitude, and the use of multiple bases of overlapping data. With this information, the members of the Colombia Consortium have very valuable information for decision-making, when sizing the investments made, and to be made, considering the costs of processing publications (APC). In turn, it is a useful input, due to its methodology, for other contexts and countries, with respect to its total scientific production, open access and the payment of APC for it

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic Gram-negative pathogen with an increase in the frequency of infections caused by multidrug resistant (MDR) and extensively drug resistant (XDR) strains, limiting the available therapeutic options. The most troublesome resistance is the acquisition and production of carbapenemases such as Verona integron-encoded metallo-β-lactamases (VIM), the most frequent and widespread, and the Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemases (KPC), which has continuously spread in the last decade. Its dissemination is linked to their location on mobile genetic elements (MGEs). In Colombia, VIM and KPC have been increasing in its frequency showing major successful dissemination. In this article, we molecularly characterized and analyzed the genetic context of blaVIM and blaKPC in carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa (CRPA) isolates from infected and colonized patients in two tertiary-care hospitals, one in Medellín and the other in a municipality close to Medellín, both areas with high carbapenemase endemicity in Colombia (2013–2015). Using whole-genome sequencing (WGS), we identified a remarkable variety of genetic backgrounds in these MDR P. aeruginosa isolates carrying blaKPC–2 and blaVIM–2. There were a diversity of class 1 integron and variations in the gene cassettes associated to blaVIM–2, as well as a possible event of spread of blaKPC–2 mediated by a plasmid that contained part of Tn4401b in one infection case. The dissemination of blaVIM–2 and blaKPC–2 in P. aeruginosa in this area in Colombia has been strongly influenced by successful international clones, carrying these genes and additional determinants of resistance on MGEs, accompanied by gene rearrangement under an antimicrobial selection pressure. These findings emphasize the need to implement control strategies based on rational antibiotic us

This report presents the results of the study on the state of open access in Argentine science and in particular of output by the researchers of the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research [CONICET]. For the study, all the publications made by scientists affiliated with an Argentinian institution between 2013 and 2020 were retrieved, with data from databases such as Lens, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Scopus, Unpaywall and Directory of Open Access Journals [DOAJ]. A search was carried out in which 136,149 articles were found, where commercial publishers published 57% of these. An essential part of these publishers are committed to open access and have established a line of business through the payment of APC (article processing charges). The estimated payments of APC in this period for Argentina were of USD $31,059,865 and USD 11,634,112 if only the publications in which Argentines are correspondent authors are considered. This figure warns about the importance of generating strategies to diversify publishing circuits, increase the investment in the national journals and empower the regional ones, and create alternatives in front of the APC market dynamics to avoid the community's scientific isolation

Since the 1990s, the open access movement has promoted democratization and global access to research based on practicesand tools that seek to break down the barriers to access and use of scientific publications. is has led to changes in the formsof scientific communication of researchers, so institutions require measurement strategies that allow them to dimension thesechanges. erefore, the objective of this article is to propose a methodology to measure and characterize open access practices inLatin American universities, taking the University of Antioquia as a case study. For this, an automatic bibliographic data collectionstrategy was designed from three sources (Web of Science, SciELO and Scopus), and open access indicators were calculated for7,990 articles with DOI of the Institution. It was identified that the open production of the University has increased in recentyears, especially in the case of the golden route, with an impact on the payment of APC made by academic documents
