Catch composition and bathymetric distribution of demersal fish caught along the coast of Mozambique between parallels 16 degree 20' and 19 degree 30' S at depths of 11 to 180 metres are given. The shrimp by-catch was also studied

A study on growth of Metapenaeus monoceros (Fabricius) of Maputo Bay

    Get PDF
Biological data on Metapenaeus monoceros has been regularly collected in Maputo Bay since 1968. The main objective of this report is to study growth as a function of the size, since this is one of the basic parameters for population dynamics. As the possibility of studying shrimp growth by modal progression analysis depends very much on the space-time configuration of sampling, the years 1968 and 1969 were chosen to study growth of the population available to the bottom trawl used by the fishing industry. In those years sampling was very frequent (twice a week) and the samples were collected from a rather small fishing area. Complementary data on the spawning, juvenile phase and recruitment to the fishery was used to establish the relationship between the different stages of the life cycle and to obtain an age/length key. Data on juveniles in estuaries was only available for 1969 and 1973

Population dynamics of Penaeus indicus at Sofala Bank, Mozambique: a preliminary study

    Get PDF
Length-based methods are used to estimate growth and mortalities of Penaeus indicus at Sofala Bank in Mozambique. This Penaeid shrimp is one of the most important species in the fishery as it constitutes 45% of the catches and has a great influence in their trend. First estimates of growth parameters for this species in Mozambique are presented and a comparison of the derived mortalities with the previous estimates is made

Análise dos efeitos da introduçāo de medidas de gestāo na pescaria de camarāo do Banco de Sofala

Biological effects of management measures introduced in the shrimp fishery from 1985 to 1990 are analysed as well as the results from simulation of different closed seasons. Observed changes in recruitment, total catch, biomass and average individual weight during 1985 to 1990 for Penaeus indicus and Hetapenaeus Monoceros are also analysed. Further studies on a stock-recruitment relationship are important due to decline of recruitment levels in this period. A three-month closed season starting in January is recommended, without increases in the monthly fishing effort. The TAC shall be fixed according to the recruitment level each year

Estado actual da pescaria de camarāo no Banco de Sofala

A summary of the shrimp fishery history as well as the most important recommendations for the period 1977-1990 is presented. During the last years the catch rates have decreased. Although many possible causes can be appointed, such as, weather conditions and increase of effort, there is no clear explanation for it. A relationship between catch rates in the main period of recruitment (January to March) and the level of recruitment of the same year was established. Based on this relationship, the total annual catch is predicted for the level of fishing mortality chosen. Fishing mortality is estimated as 2.28 yearˉ¹ and a gradual reduction of fishing effort is recommended until 2.17 yearˉ¹ calculated as F(sub)0.1

The use of Bayesian latent class cluster models to classify patterns of cognitive performance in healthy ageing

    Get PDF
The main focus of this study is to illustrate the applicability of latent class analysis in the assessment of cognitive performance profiles during ageing. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to detect main cognitive dimensions (based on the neurocognitive test variables) and Bayesian latent class analysis (LCA) models (without constraints) were used to explore patterns of cognitive performance among community-dwelling older individuals. Gender, age and number of school years were explored as variables. Three cognitive dimensions were identified: general cognition (MMSE), memory (MEM) and executive (EXEC) function. Based on these, three latent classes of cognitive performance profiles (LC1 to LC3) were identified among the older adults. These classes corresponded to stronger to weaker performance patterns (LC1>LC2>LC3) across all dimensions; each latent class denoted the same hierarchy in the proportion of males, age and number of school years. Bayesian LCA provided a powerful tool to explore cognitive typologies among healthy cognitive agers. The study is integrated in the "Maintaining health in old age through homeostasis (SWITCHBOX)" collaborative project funded by the European Commission FP7 initiative (grant HEALTH-F2-2010-259772).
