    Microstructural and mechanical characterization of tungsten based materials for fusion reactors

    El wolframio (W) y sus aleaciones se consideran los mejores candidatos para la construcción del divertor en la nueva generación de reactores de fusión nuclear. Este componente va a recibir las cargas térmicas más elevadas durante el funcionamiento del reactor ya que estará en contacto directo con el plasma. En los últimos años, después de un profundo análisis y siguiendo una estrategia de reducción de costes, la Organización de ITER tomó la decisión de construir el divertor integramente de wolframio desde el principio. Por ello, el wolframio no sólo actuará como material en contacto con el plasma (PFM), sino que también tendría aplicaciones estructurales. El wolframio, debido a sus excelentes propiedades termo-físicas, cumple todos los requerimientos para ser utilizado como PFM, sin embargo, su inherente fragilidad pone en peligro su uso estructural. Por tanto, uno de los principales objetivos de esta tesis es encontrar una aleación de wolframio con menor fragilidad. Durante éste trabajo, se realizó la caracterización microstructural y mecánica de diferentes materiales basados en wolframio. Sin embargo, ésta tarea es un reto debido a la pequeña cantidad de material suministrado, su reducido tamaño de grano y fragilidad. Por ello, para una correcta medida de todas las propiedades físicas y mecánicas se utilizaron diversas técnicas experimentales. Algunas de ellas se emplean habitualmente como la nanoindentación o los ensayos de flexión en tres puntos (TPB). Sin embargo, otras fueron especificamente desarrolladas e implementadas durante el desarrollo de esta tesis como es el caso de la medida real de la tenacidad de fractura en los materiales masivos, o de las medidas in situ de la tenacidad de fractura en las láminas delgadas de wolframio. Diversas composiciones de aleaciones de wolframio masivas (W-1% Y2O3, W-2% V-0.5% Y2O3, W-4% V-0.5% Y2O3, W-2% Ti-1% La2O3 y W-4% Ti-1% La2O3) se han estudiado y comparado con un wolframio puro producido en las mismas condiciones. Estas aleaciones, producidas por ruta pulvimetalúrgica de aleado mecánico (MA) y compactación isostática en caliente (HIP), fueron microstructural y mecánicamente caracterizadas desde 77 hasta 1473 K en aire y en alto vacío. Entre otras propiedades físicas y mecánicas se midieron la dureza, el módulo elástico, la resistencia a flexión y la tenacidad de fractura para todas las aleaciones. Finalmente se analizaron las superficies de fractura después de los ensayos de TPB para relacionar los micromecanismos de fallo con el comportamiento macroscópico a rotura. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron un comportamiento mecánico frágil en casi todo el intervalo de temperaturas y para casi todas las aleaciones sin mejoría de la temperatura de transición dúctil-frágil (DBTT). Con el fin de encontrar un material base wolframio con una DBTT más baja se realizó también un estudio, aún preliminar, de láminas delgadas de wolframio puro y wolframio dopado con 0.005wt.% potasio (K). Éstas láminas fueron fabricadas industrialmente mediante sinterizado y laminación en caliente y en frío y se sometieron posteriormente a un tratamiento térmico de recocido desde 1073 hasta 2673 K. Se ha analizado la evolución de su microestructura y las propiedades mecánicas al aumentar la temperatura de recocido. Los resultados mostraron la estabilización de los granos de wolframio con el incremento de la temperatura de recocido en las láminas delgadas de wolframio dopado con potasio. Sin embargo, es necesario realizar estudios adicionales para entender mejor la microstructura y algunas propiedades mecánicas de estos materiales, como la tenacidad de fractura. Tungsten (W) and tungsten-based alloys are considered to be the best candidate materials for fabricating the divertor in the next-generation nuclear fusion reactors. This component will experience the highest thermal loads during the operation of a reactor since it directly faces the plasma. In recent years, after thorough analysis that followed a strategy of cost reduction, the ITER Organization decided to built a full-tunsgten divertor before the first nuclear campaigns. Therefore, tungsten will be used not only as a plasma-facing material (PFM) but also in structural applications. Tungsten, due to its the excellent thermo-physical properties fulfils the requirements of a PFM, however, its use in structural applications is compromised due to its inherent brittleness. One of the objectives of this phD thesis is therefore, to find a material with improved brittleness behaviour. The microstructural and mechanical characterisation of different tunsgten-based materials was performed. However, this is a challenging task because of the reduced laboratory-scale size of the specimens provided, their _ne microstructure and their brittleness. Consequently, many techniques are required to ensure an accurate measurement of all the mechanical and physical properties. Some of the applied methods have been widely used such as nanoindentation or three-point bending (TPB) tests. However, other methods were specifically developed and implemented during this work such as the measurement of the real fracture toughness of bulk-tunsgten alloys or the in situ fracture toughness measurements of very thin tungsten foils. Bulk-tunsgten materials with different compositions (W-1% Y2O3, W-2% V- 0.5% Y2O3, W-4% V-0.5% Y2O3, W-2% Ti-1% La2O3 and W-4% Ti-1% La2O3) were studied and compared with pure tungsten processed under the same conditions. These alloys, produced by a powder metallurgical route of mechanical alloying (MA) and hot isostatic pressing (HIP), were microstructural and mechanically characterised from 77 to 1473 K in air and under high vacuum conditions. Hardness, elastic modulus, flexural strength and fracture toughness for all of the alloys were measured in addition to other physical and mechanical properties. Finally, the fracture surfaces after the TPB tests were analysed to correlate the micromechanisms of failure with the macroscopic behaviour. The results reveal brittle mechanical behaviour in almost the entire temperature range for the alloys and micromechanisms of failure with no improvement in the ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT). To continue the search of a tungsten material with lowered DBTT, a preliminary study of pure tunsgten and 0.005 wt.% potassium (K)-doped tungsten foils was also performed. These foils were industrially produced by sintering and hot and cold rolling. After that, they were annealed from 1073 to 2673 K to analyse the evolution of the microstructural and mechanical properties with increasing annealing temperature. The results revealed the stabilisation of the tungsten grains with increasing annealing temperature in the potassium-doped tungsten foil. However, additional studies need to be performed to gain a better understanding of the microstructure and mechanical properties of these materials such as fracture toughness

    Comportamiento mecánico de la aleación W+1%Y2O3 en función de la atmósfera y la temperatura

    Mediante ensayos de flexión en tres puntos se compara y evalúa el comportamiento mecánico de la aleación W- 1wt%Y2O3 con el W puro fabricados ambos mediante HIP. Se ha obtenido la tenacidad de fractura, la resistencia a flexión y el límite elástico en atmósfera oxidante y de vacío en un intervalo de temperaturas comprendido entre -196 ºC, ensayos de inmersión en nitrógeno líquido, y 1200 ºC. Previamente, se ha medido la densidad, la dureza mediante ensayos Vickers y el módulo de elasticidad dinámico de los materiales. Además, la dureza y el módulo de elasticidad se han comparado con los obtenidos mediante ensayos instrumentados de nanoindentación. Finalmente se ha realizado un pequeño estudio de las superficies de fractura de las muestras ensayadas mediante microscopía electrónica de barrido para poder relacionar el modo de rotura de los materiales y las propiedades mecánicas macroscópicas con los micromecanismos de fallo involucrados en función de la temperatura

    Mechanical characterisation of tungsten-1wt.% yttrium oxide as a function of temperature and atmosphere

    This study evaluates the mechanical behaviour of an Y2O3-dispersed tungsten (W) alloy and compares it to a pure W reference material. Both materials were processed via mechanical alloying (MA) and subsequent hot isostatic pressing (HIP). We performed non-standard three-point bending (TPB) tests in both an oxidising atmosphere and vacuum across a temperature range from 77 K, obtained via immersion in liquid nitrogen, to 1473 K to determine the mechanical strength, yield strength and fracture toughness. This research aims to evaluate how the mechanical behaviour of the alloy is affected by oxides formed within the material at high temperatures, primarily from 873 K, when the materials undergo a massive thermal degradation. The results indicate that the alloy is brittle to a high temperature (1473 K) under both atmospheres and that the mechanical properties degrade significantly above 873 K. We also used Vickers microhardness tests and the dynamic modulus by impulse excitation technique (IET) to determine the elastic modulus at room temperature. Moreover, we performed nanoindentation tests to determine the effect of size on the hardness and elastic modulus; however, no significant differences were found. Additionally, we calculated the relative density of the samples to assess the porosity of the alloy. Finally, we analysed the microstructure and fracture surfaces of the tested materials via field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).     En este artículo se realiza un estudio del modelo de personalidad de los cinco grandes en una muestra española de 700 adolescentes. Se realiza un análisis de los cinco grandes factores en función de la puntuación obtenida en el BFQ-NA y las variables edad y sexo de los adolescentes. Respecto a la variable sexo se obtienen diferencias significativas para todos los factores, destacando mayores puntuaciones en hombres en el factor Apertura. Por el contrario, las mujeres obtienen puntuaciones más elevadas en el resto de los factores. Con respecto a la variable edad, a medida que se avanza en la adolescencia, se obtienen menores puntuaciones en Extraversión y Conciencia. Para el resto de factores no existen diferencias significativas según esta variable. Finalmente, se realizan una serie de comparaciones con otros estudios nacionales e internacionales que también han utilizado el BFQ-NA.At this article, 700 Spanish adolescent are studied using the Big Five Personality Model. The Big Five Factors are analyzed according to the BFQ-NA scores, the age and sex variables in adolescent. About sex variable, it´s obtained significant differences for all factors, emphasizing higher scores in men for the Opening factor. By contrast, women got higher scores in the other factors. Regarding to the age variable, as it progresses in adolescents, lower scores in Extraversion and Conscience are obtained. About all other factors are not significant differences by age. Finally, we perform a series of comparisons with other national and internationals studies which have also used the BFQ-NA

    The importance of mineralogical knowledge in the sustainability of artisanal gold mining: a mid-south Peru case

    Mineralogy and gold processing techniques from several mining areas of the Nazca-Ocoña gold belt, Mid-South Peru, were investigated to assess the efficiency of gold extraction methods in relation to their mineralogy. The deposits from this belt are intrusion gold related to mineralization in quartz veins. Native gold occurs as micrometric grains encapsulated in pyrite and in minor amounts in other sulfides and quartz. Electrum is found mainly in fractures of pyrite and attains up to 35 wt. % Ag. In addition to these occurrences, gold tellurides also occur and they are abundant in San Luis. Gold processing is carried out by amalgamation with mercury and/or cyanidation. The comparison of the gold grade in the mineralizations and in the residual tailings indicates that a significant amount of gold is not recovered using the mercury amalgamation process and also, in the case of the gold recovery by cyanidation, except when cement was added to the cyanide solution. This was due to an increase in the pH that favours the dissolution of the gold matrix. In the cyanidation process carried out in tailings previously treated with mercury, part of the mercury retained in them is released to the atmosphere or to the cyanidation fluids.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Magnetic Resonance Imaging, texture analysis and regression techniques to non-destructively predict the quality characteristics of meat pieces

    The quality of meat products is traditionally assessed by chemical or sensorial analysis, which are time consuming, need specialized technicians and destroy the products. The development of new technologies to monitor meat pieces using non-destructive methods in order to establish their quality is earning importance in the last years. An increasing number of studies have been carried out on meat pieces combining Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), texture descriptors and regression techniques to predict several physico-chemical or sensorial attributes of the meat, mainly different types of pig ham and loins. In spite of the importance of the problem, the conclusions of these works are still preliminary because they only use the most classical texture descriptors and regressors instead of stronger methods, and because the methodology used to measure the performance is optimistic. In this work, we test a wide range of texture analysis techniques and regression methods using a realistic methodology to predict several physico-chemical and sensorial attributes of different meat pieces of Iberian pigs. The texture descriptors include statistical techniques, like Haralick descriptors, local binary patterns, fractal features and frequential descriptors, like Gabor or wavelet features. The regression techniques include linear regressors, neural networks, deep learning, support vector machines, regression trees, ensembles, boosting machines and random forests, among others. We developed experiments using 15 texture feature vectors, 28 regressors over 4 datasets of Iberian pig meat pieces to predict 39 physico-chemical and sensorial attributes, summarizing16,380 experiments. There is not any combination of texture vector and regressor which provides the best result for all attributes tested. Nevertheless, all these experiments provided the following conclusions: (1) the regressor performance, measured using the squared correlation (R2), is from good to excellent (above 0.5625) for 29 out of 39 attributes tested; (2) the WAPE (Weighted Absolute Percent Error) is lower than 2% for 32 out of 37 attributes; (3) the dispersion in computer predictions around the true attributes is lower or similar than the dispersion in the labeling expert’s for the majority of attributes (85%); and (4) differences between predicted and true values are not statistically significant for 29 out of 37 attributes using the Wilcoxon ranksum statistical test.     Effect of dietary conjugated linoleic acid in combination with monounsaturated fatty acids on the composition and quality traits of cooked loin

Se estudiaron los rasgos de composición y calidad (contenido de grasa, pérdida de cocción, oxidación de lípidos, perfil de ácidos grasos, perfil volátil y análisis sensorial) de lomo cocido, según se vieron afectados por la interacción CLA, MUFA y CLA × MUFA. CLA y CLA × MUFA no afectaron el contenido de grasa intramuscular, las pérdidas por cocción, la oxidación de los lípidos, el perfil volátil y los rasgos sensoriales de la carne cocida. Por lo tanto, el CLA podría complementarse con la dieta del cerdo sin detrimento de los rasgos de calidad medidos de la carne cocida, e independientemente del nivel de MUFA de las dietas de los cerdos. El CLA dietético aumentó el contenido de SFA y disminuyó el nivel de MUFA de la carne, y condujo a un enriquecimiento de CLA, independientemente del nivel de MUFA de las dietas de cerdo, pero el contenido de los isómeros de CLA de la carne fresca disminuyó después del proceso de cocción.Three levels (0%, 1% and 2%) of a conjugated linoleic acid oil (CLA) were combined with two levels of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) (low – 19% average and high – 39% average) for pig feeding (n = 48, eight animals per treatment). The composition and quality traits (fat content, cooking losses, lipid oxidation, fatty acid profile, volatile profile and sensory analysis) of cooked loin, as affected by dietary CLA, MUFA, and CLA × MUFA interaction were studied. CLA and CLA × MUFA did not affect the intramuscular fat content, cooking losses, lipid oxidation, volatile profile and sensory traits of cooked meat. Therefore, CLA could be supplemented to the pig diet without detriment of the measured quality traits of cooked meat, and regardless of the MUFA level of pig diets. Dietary CLA increased the content of SFA and decreased the level of MUFA of meat, and led to a CLA enrichment, regardless the MUFA level of pig diets, but the content of CLA isomers of fresh meat decreased after the cooking process.Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia: Ayuda AGL 2003-0353

    Living with Restrictions. The Perspective of Nursing Students with Primary Dysmenorrhea.

    Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) affects a large number of female university students, diminishing their quality of life and hindering academic performance, representing a significant cause of absenteeism. The purpose of our study was to determine how nursing students experienced restrictions as a result of primary dysmenorrhea. A qualitative exploratory study was conducted among 33 nursing students with primary dysmenorrhea. A purposeful sampling strategy was applied. Data were collected from five focus groups (two sessions each) and the field notes of 10 researchers. A video meeting platform was used to conduct the focus groups. A thematic inductive analysis was performed. Thirty-three female nursing students participated in the study with a mean age of 22.72 (SD 3.46) years. Three broad themes emerged: (a) restrictions on daily activities and sports; (b) academic restrictions, and (c) restrictions on social and sexual relationships. The students described restrictions in performing everyday activities, such as carrying weight, and shopping. Some students even gave up the practice of sports and were absent from classes at the university, and from clinical practices at the hospital. The pain affected their ability to maintain and create new social relationships. Primary dysmenorrhea caused restrictions in the personal, social and academic life of the nursing students.post-print299 K
