    Conceptual Design of a Low-Energy Ion Beam Storage Ring and a Recoil Separator to Study Radiative Neutron Capture by Radioactive Ions

    Recently, the TRIUMF Storage Ring (TRISR), a storage ring for the existing Isotope Separator and Accelerator-I (ISAC-I) radioactive ion beam facility at TRIUMF, was proposed. It may be possible to directly measure neutron-induced radiative capture reactions in inverse kinematics by combining the ring with a high-flux neutron generator as the neutron target. Herein, we present the conceptual design of a low-energy ion storage ring as well as a fusion product extraction system with a Wien filter and recoil separator for detecting neutron capture products based on ion optical calculations and particle-tracking simulations.Comment: 8 pages, 11 figure

    Jamming transition in a highly dense granular system under vertical vibration

    The dynamics of the jamming transition in a three-dimensional granular system under vertical vibration is studied using diffusing-wave spectroscopy. When the maximum acceleration of the external vibration is large, the granular system behaves like a fluid, with the dynamic correlation function G(t) relaxing rapidly. As the acceleration of vibration approaches the gravitational acceleration g, the relaxation of G(t) slows down dramatically, and eventually stops. Thus the system undergoes a phase transition and behaves like a solid. Near the transition point, we find that the structural relaxation shows a stretched exponential behavior. This behavior is analogous to the behavior of supercooled liquids close to the glass transition.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted by Phys. Rev.

    83歳の女子で排尿困難を主訴として当科受診,外尿道口部に直径約3cmの腫瘤を認め,生検にて細網肉腫と判明。胸部X線写真およびリンパ管造影にて転移所見なし。入院後全身状態が悪化し, 14日目にたまたま右下腹部の激痛と腹部膨満を訴え,発熱と白血球増多を認めたため虫垂穿孔による汎発性腹膜炎の疑いにて開腹符を施行した。虫垂および上部消化管に異常なく子宮底中央部より膿汁が腹膜腔内に流出するのが認められた。子宮膿瘍穿孔による腹膜炎の診断のもとに,同部を切除縫合し腹膜腔内にドレーンを設置し手術を終えた。術中,傍大動脈および腸間膜リンパ節を観察する機会が与えられたが, とくに異常を認めなかった。術後経過は悪く嚥下性肺炎のため死亡した。剖検はおこなわれなかった。女子尿道の悪性リンパ題症例の報告は原発性にしろ転移性にしろ非常に少ない。われわれの症例は剖検できなかったので,厳密にいうと臨床検査や手術時観察の到達しうる以外の部位に原発巣が絶無であるとはいえないが,臨床所見からすると,あきらかに原発性細網肉腫症例と考えられる。本文の要旨は第87回日本泌尿器科学会関西地方会にて発表した。Primary reticulum cell sarcoma of the urethra seen in an 83-year-old woman is described

    Response of Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) Leaf Surface Defenses to Exogenous Methyl Jasmonate

    Helianthus annuus, the common sunflower, produces a complex array of secondary compounds that are secreted into glandular trichomes, specialized structures found on leaf surfaces and anther appendages of flowers. The primary components of these trichome secretions are sesquiterpene lactones (STL), a diverse class of compounds produced abundantly by the plant family Compositae and believed to contribute to plant defense against herbivory. We treated wild and cultivated H. annuus accessions with exogenous methyl jasmonate, a plant hormone that mediates plant defense against insect herbivores and certain classes of fungal pathogens. The wild sunflower produced a higher density of glandular trichomes on its leaves than the cultivar. Comparison of the profiles of glandular trichome extracts obtained by liquid chromatography–mass spectroscopy (LC-MS) showed that wild and cultivated H. annuus were qualitatively similar in surface chemistry, although differing in the relative size and proportion of various compounds detected. Despite observing consistent transcriptional responses to methyl jasmonate treatment, we detected no significant effect on glandular trichome density or LC-MS profile in cultivated or wild sunflower, with wild sunflower exhibiting a declining trend in overall STL production and foliar glandular trichome density of jasmonate-treated plants. These results suggest that glandular trichomes and associated compounds may act as constitutive defenses or require greater levels of stimulus for induction than the observed transcriptional responses to exogenous jasmonate. Reduced defense investment in domesticated lines is consistent with predicted tradeoffs caused by selection for increased yield; future research will focus on the development of genetic resources to explicitly test the ecological roles of glandular trichomes and associated effects on plant growth and fitness

    Radiation Hardness Test of a Silicon Detector under Radiation Dose Rate of Nuclear Power Plant for In-Containment Coolant Leakage Detection System

    An influence evaluation by background radiation on a silicon detector, which will be used to detect a coolant leakage, and installed in a containment building of a nuclear power plant, was performed and the result was discussed. The detector that consists of a silicon sensor and preamplifier mounted in a shielding structure which composed of a 5 cm lead cylinder will be installed in an annulus zone that is influenced by background radiation (neutron and gamma ray) from an operation of a nuclear reactor. Absorbed dose rates on a silicon sensor and preamplifier were calculated as 2.15 mGy/hr and 1.05 mGy/hr, respectively, by Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) simulation. Data of background radiation had referred to a Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR) of a nuclear power plant in the Republic of Korea. A silicon sensor and preamplifier were irradiated by a Co60 gamma radiation source equipped in a facility of Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute Advanced Radiation Technology Institute (KAERI ARTI) of the Republic of Korea. A Po-210 alpha source was used as a check source to evaluate a state of a function of the detector during gamma irradiation. Absorbed dose rates were about 22.92 mGy/hr and 6.6 mGy/hr on silicon sensor and preamplifier, respectively. Before and during gamma irradiation, a count rates from the check source wasn`t changed (from 18.4 cps to 18.4±0.2 cps after irradiation), and any degradations of function also weren`t observed. Even more harsh condition than calculated dose rates referred by the condition of background radiation of in-containment, the silicon detector maintained the ability of function of charged particles detection. Based on the result, it has been demonstrated that a silicon detector is a suitable detector for detecting charged particles from a leaked coolant even during interfered by the background radiation of a primary system of a nuclear power plant
