    Talent management in academia: the effect of discipline and context on recruitment

    Although talent management is widely discussed in large for –profit organisations and multinationals, it has been little discussed in relation to higher education. This paper examines one aspect of talent management, recruitment, in academia in accounting, in two different countries, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland. It frames the study around three dilemmas - transparency versus autonomy, the power of human resources versus the power of academics, and equality versus homogeneity. It considers the recruitment context and drivers, what this tells us about how talent is defined, and the insights that can be gained from comparing recruitment across different disciplines and geographical contexts. By examining recruitment in one discipline across different contexts we show that recruitment is influenced by a complex interplay between subfield and context which can be linked to the strategic priorities of universities in the three contexts, resulting in different definitions of talent

    Protecting the public interest? Continuing professional development policies and role-profession conflict in accountancy

    This paper adds to the literature on historic and current claims to a public interest mandate by professional accountants and their accountancy bodies by examining the insights offered by an analysis of continuing professional development (CPD) policies in the accountancy profession. The accountancy profession claims that these policies serve the public interest. Drawing on public interest theory, the paper examines how the profession has defined and limited the public interest via, and in relation to, CPD and the implications of the CPD policies when considering the profession’s claims to serve the public interest. The CPD policies of twelve professional accountancy bodies are reviewed. This reveals multiple dualisms (input or output, relevant to profession or relevant to current role, individual or employer-focused) and broad spectra (from more reflective to more prescribed and from core to peripheral accounting fields) resulting in multiple permutations that render CPD difficult to conceptualise. The result is that CPD in the accountancy profession exhibits contradictions that result in policies that are logically incoherent. The blurred distinction between a professional accountant’s responsibility as a member of a profession and as a person carrying out an occupational role limits the scope of CPD to adequately protect the public interest

    Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in Alström syndrome

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A case series of the cardiac magnetic resonance imaging findings in seven adult Alström patients.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Seven patients from the National Specialist Commissioning Group Centre for Alström Disease, Torbay, England, UK, completed the cardiac magnetic resonance imaging protocol to assess cardiac structure and function in Alström cardiomyopathy.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>All patients had some degree of left and right ventricular dysfunction. Patchy mid wall gadolinium delayed enhancement was demonstrated, suggesting an underlying fibrotic process. Some degree of cardiomyopathy was universal. No evidence of myocardial infarction or fatty infiltration was demonstrated, but coronary artery disease cannot be completely excluded. Repeat scanning after 18 months in one subject showed progression of fibrosis and decreased left ventricular function.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Adult Alström cardiomyopathy appears to be a fibrotic process causing impairment of both ventricles. Serial cardiac magnetic resonance scanning has helped clarify the underlying disease progression and responses to treatment. Confirmation of significant mutations in the <it>ALMS1 </it>gene should lead to advice to screen the subject for cardiomyopathy, and metabolic disorders.</p

    Radiosynthesis of [18F]-Labelled Pro-Nucleotides (ProTides).

    Phosphoramidate pro-nucleotides (ProTides) have revolutionized the field of anti-viral and anti-cancer nucleoside therapy, overcoming the major limitations of nucleoside therapies and achieving clinical and commercial success. Despite the translation of ProTide technology into the clinic, there remain unresolved in vivo pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic questions. Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging using [18F]-labelled model ProTides could directly address key mechanistic questions and predict response to ProTide therapy. Here we report the first radiochemical synthesis of [18F]ProTides as novel probes for PET imaging. As a proof of concept, two chemically distinct radiolabelled ProTides have been synthesized as models of 3'- and 2'-fluorinated ProTides following different radiosynthetic approaches. The 3'-[18F]FLT ProTide was obtained via a late stage [18F]fluorination in radiochemical yields (RCY) of 15-30% (n = 5, decay-corrected from end of bombardment (EoB)), with high radiochemical purities (97%) and molar activities of 56 GBq/ÎĽmol (total synthesis time of 130 min.). The 2'-[18F]FIAU ProTide was obtained via an early stage [18F]fluorination approach with an RCY of 1-5% (n = 7, decay-corrected from EoB), with high radiochemical purities (98%) and molar activities of 53 GBq/ÎĽmol (total synthesis time of 240 min)

    Systematic and detailed analysis of behavioural tests in the rat Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion (MCAO) model of stroke: tests for long-term assessment

    In order to test therapeutics, functional assessments are required. In pre-clinical stroke research, there is little consensus regarding the most appropriate behavioural tasks to assess deficits; especially when testing over extended times in milder models with short occlusion times and small lesion volumes. In this study we comprehensively assessed 16 different behavioural tests, with the aim of identifying those that show robust, reliable and stable deficits for up to 2 months. These tasks are regularly used in stroke research, as well as being useful for examining striatal dysfunction in models of Huntington’s and Parkinson’s disease. Two cohorts of male Wistar rats underwent the intraluminal filament model of MCAO (30min) and were imaged 24hrs later. This resulted in primarily subcortical infarcts, with a small amount of cortical damage. Animals were tested, along with sham and naïve groups at 24hrs, 7 days, and 1 and 2 months. Following behavioural testing, brains were processed and striatal neuronal counts were performed alongside measurements of total brain and white matter atrophy. The staircase, adjusting steps, rotarod and apomorphine induced rotations were the most reliable for assessing long-term deficits in the 30 min transient MCAO model of stroke

    Explorations into peptide nucleic acid contrast agents as emerging scaffolds for breakthrough solutions in medical imaging and diagnosis

    Peptide nucleic acids (PNAs, nucleic acid analogues with a peptide backbone rather than a phosphoribosyl backbone) have emerged as promising chemical agents in antigene or antisense therapeutics, as splicing modulators or in gene editing. Their main benefits, compared to DNA or RNA agents, are their biochemical stability and the lack of negative charges throughout the backbone, leading to negligible electrostatic interaction with the strand with which they are hybridizing. As a result, hybridization of PNA strands with DNA or RNA strands leads to higher binding energies and melting temperatures. A lack of natural transporters, however, necessitates the formation of PNA-containing chimeras or the formulation of nanoparticular cell delivery methods.     Atrial fibrillation cryoablation is an effective day case treatment: the UK PolarX vs. Arctic Front Advance experience

AIMS: Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is the cornerstone of catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF). There are limited data on the PolarX Cryoballoon. The study aimed to establish the safety, efficacy, and feasibility of same day discharge for Cryoballoon PVI. METHODS AND RESULTS: Multi-centre study across 12 centres. Procedural metrics, safety profile, and procedural efficacy of the PolarX Cryoballoon with the Arctic Front Advance (AFA) Cryoballoon were compared in a cohort large enough to provide definitive comparative data. A total of 1688 patients underwent PVI with cryoablation (50% PolarX and 50% AFA). Successful PVI was achieved with 1677 (99.3%) patients with 97.2% (n = 1641) performed as day case procedures with a complication rate of &lt;1%. Safety, procedural metrics, and efficacy of the PolarX Cryoballoon were comparable with the AFA cohort. The PolarX Cryoballoon demonstrated a nadir temperature of -54.6 \ub1 7.6\ub0C, temperature at 30 s of -38.6 \ub1 7.2\ub0C, time to -40\ub0C of 34.1 \ub1 13.7 s, and time to isolation of 49.8 \ub1 33.2 s. Independent predictors for achieving PVI included time to reach -40\ub0C [odds ratio (OR) 1.34; P &lt; 0.001] and nadir temperature (OR 1.24; P &lt; 0.001) with an optimal cut-off of ≤34 s [area under the curve (AUC) 0.73; P &lt; 0.001] and nadir temperature of ≤-54.0\ub0C (AUC 0.71; P &lt; 0.001), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This large-scale UK multi-centre study has shown that Cryoballoon PVI is a safe, effective day case procedure. PVI using the PolarX Cryoballoon was similarly safe and effective as the AFA Cryoballoon. The cryoablation metrics achieved with the PolarX Cryoballoon were different to that reported with the AFA Cryoballoon. Modified cryoablation targets are required when utilizing the PolarX Cryoballoon
