Exploring Short-GRB afterglow parameter space for observations in coincidence with gravitational waves
Short duration Gamma Ray Bursts(SGRB) and their afterglows are among the most
promising electro-magnetic (EM) counterparts of Neutron Star (NS) mergers. The
afterglow emission is broadband, visible across the entire electro-magnetic
window from -ray to radio frequencies. The flux evolution in these
frequencies is sensitive to the multi-dimensional afterglow physical parameter
space. Observations of gravitational wave (GW) from BNS mergers in spatial and
temporal coincidence with SGRB and associated afterglows can provide valuable
constraints on afterglow physics. We run simulations of GW-detected BNS events
and assuming all of them are associated with a GRB jet which also produces an
afterglow, investigate how detections or non-detections in X-ray, optical and
radio frequencies can be influenced by the parameter space. We narrow-down the
regions of afterglow parameter space for a uniform top-hat jet model which
would result in different detection scenarios. We list inferences which can be
drawn on the physics of GRB afterglows from multi-messenger astronomy with

Rates of Short-GRB afterglows in association with Binary Neutron Star mergers
Assuming all binary Neutron Star mergers produce Short Gamma Ray Bursts
(SGRBs), we combine the merger rates of binary Neutron Stars (BNS) from
population synthesis studies, the sensitivities of advanced Gravitational Wave
(GW) interferometer networks, and of the electromagnetic (EM) facilities in
various wave bands, to compute the detection rate of associated afterglows in
these bands. Using the inclination angle measured from GWs as a proxy for the
viewing angle and assuming a uniform distribution of jet opening angle between
3 to 30 degrees, we generate light curves of the counterparts using the open
access afterglow hydrodynamics package BoxFit for X-ray, Optical and Radio
bands. For different EM detectors we obtain the fraction of EM counterparts
detectable in these three bands by imposing appropriate detection thresholds.
In association with BNS mergers detected by five (three) detector network of
advanced GW interferometers, assuming a BNS merger rate of ~\citep{dominik2012double}, we find the afterglow
detection rates (per year) to be (), ()
and () in the X-ray, optical and radio bands respectively.
Our rates represent maximum possible detections for the given BNS rate since we
ignore effects of cadence and field of view in EM follow up observations.Comment: Published in MNRA
Zero Temperature Insulator-Metal Transition in Doped Manganites
We study the transition at T=0 from a ferromagnetic insulating to a
ferromagnetic metallic phase in manganites as a function of hole doping using
an effective low-energy model Hamiltonian proposed by us recently. The model
incorporates the quantum nature of the dynamic Jahn-Teller(JT) phonons strongly
coupled to orbitally degenerate electrons as well as strong Coulomb correlation
effects and leads naturally to the coexistence of localized (JT polaronic) and
band-like electronic states. We study the insulator-metal transition as a
function of doping as well as of the correlation strength U and JT gain in
energy E_{JT}, and find, for realistic values of parameters, a ground state
phase diagram in agreement with experiments. We also discuss how several other
features of manganites as well as differences in behaviour among manganites can

Malpe fishing harbour inferno: an impact analysis
An unprecedented fire disaster, in which 196 mechanised fishing boats were gutted, took place at Malpe, a major fishing harbour in Karnataka State in the afternoon of 19th July, 1979. The total loss due to this havoc has been estimated at 2.3 crores of rupees. Though the total loss to the nation on accountof the fire disaster is to the tune of Rs. 2.3 crores, the individual loss of the owners of mechanised vessels was much less. A member of C. M. F. R. I. staff has been deployed to gather information relating to the progress made towards the normalisation of fishing activities in the affected area. This would enable monitoring of the process of rehabilitation in the coming month
Cost Reductive Laparoendoscopic Single Site Surgery Endotrainer and Animal Lab Training—Our Methodology
Laparoendoscopic single site surgery (LESS) is a new avenue in laparoscopic urology. The main advantage is the enhanced cosmetic benefits of single hidden scar. Lately many papers are being published on various procedures done by LESS. Like conventional laparoscopy, this approach is likely to be used more widely and hence exposure to this field is essential. However, formal training in this technique is not widely available. Expensive ports and nonavailability of endotrainer may be the factors deterring the training. We have modified the standard laparoscopic endotrainer with improvised ports, to make it suitable for single port laparoscopic training. For the animal lab training improvised ports and low cost instruments were used. Thus the overall cost of the training in LESS was reduced, and better confidence levels were achieved prior to human applications
Singular value decomposition in parametrised tests of post-Newtonian theory
Various coefficients of the 3.5 post-Newtonian (PN) phasing formula of
non-spinning compact binaries moving in circular orbits is fully characterized
by the two component masses. If two of these coefficients are independently
measured, the masses can be estimated. Future gravitational wave observations
could measure many of the 8 independent PN coefficients calculated to date.
These additional measurements can be used to test the PN predictions of the
underlying theory of gravity. Since all of these parameters are functions of
the two component masses, there is strong correlation between the parameters
when treated independently. Using Singular Value Decomposition of the Fisher
information matrix, we remove this correlations and obtain a new set of
parameters which are linear combinations of the original phasing coefficients.
We show that the new set of parameters can be estimated with significantly
improved accuracies which has implications for the ongoing efforts to implement
parametrised tests of PN theory in the data analysis pipelines.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in Classical and

The Prevalence of Latent Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Infection Based on an Interferon-γ Release Assay: A Cross-Sectional Survey Among Urban Adults in Mwanza, Tanzania.
One third of the world's population is estimated to be latently infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (LTBI). Surveys of LTBI are rarely performed in resource poor TB high endemic countries like Tanzania although low-income countries harbor the largest burden of the worlds LTBI. The primary objective was to estimate the prevalence of LTBI in household contacts of pulmonary TB cases and a group of apparently healthy neighborhood controls in an urban setting of such a country. Secondly we assessed potential impact of LTBI on inflammation by quantitating circulating levels of an acute phase reactant: alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) in neighborhood controls. The study was nested within the framework of two nutrition studies among TB patients in Mwanza, Tanzania. Household contacts- and neighborhood controls were invited to participate. The study involved a questionnaire, BMI determination and blood samples to measure AGP, HIV testing and a Quantiferon Gold In tube (QFN-IT) test to detect signs of LTBI. 245 household contacts and 192 neighborhood controls had available QFN-IT data. Among household contacts, the proportion of QFT-IT positive was 59% compared to 41% in the neighborhood controls (p = 0.001). In a linear regression model adjusted for sex, age, CD4 and HIV, a QFT-IT positive test was associated with a 10% higher level of alpha-1-acid glycoprotein(AGP) (10(B) 1.10, 95% CI 1.01; 1.20, p = 0.03), compared to individuals with a QFT-IT negative test. LTBI is highly prevalent among apparently healthy urban Tanzanians even without known exposure to TB in the household. LTBI was found to be associated with elevated levels of AGP. The implications of this observation merit further studies
Sodium vacancy ordering and the co-existence of localized spins and itinerant charges in NaxCoO2
The sodium cobaltate family (NaxCoO2) is unique among transition metal oxides
because the Co sits on a triangular lattice and its valence can be tuned over a
wide range by varying the Na concentration x. Up to now detailed modeling of
the rich phenomenology (which ranges from unconventional superconductivity to
enhanced thermopower) has been hampered by the difficulty of controlling pure
phases. We discovered that certain Na concentrations are specially stable and
are associated with superlattice ordering of the Na clusters. This leads
naturally to a picture of co-existence of localized spins and itinerant charge
carriers. For x = 0.84 we found a remarkably small Fermi energy of 87 K. Our
picture brings coherence to a variety of measurements ranging from NMR to
optical to thermal transport. Our results also allow us to take the first step
towards modeling the mysterious ``Curie-Weiss'' metal state at x = 0.71. We
suggest the local moments may form a quantum spin liquid state and we propose
