Understanding Variation in the Practice of Employee Discipline: The Perspective of the First-Line Supervisor
First-line supervisors' responses to employee-related problems can vary widely from one supervisor to another. Assuming fair and consistent disciplinary activity is valued by organizations, then discovery of the factors causing supervisors to respond differently to similar situations is a valuable activity. Using a case study approach for four organizations in Puerto Rico, this article explores how factors such as sector, union presence, and managerial and human resource department support influence the choice of a discipline strategy. When present, some of these factors were found to encourage supervisors to comply with formal disciplinary policy. Organizations can use these findings to assess the degree to which there is consistency in these factors and take strategic action to assure that first-line supervisors receive clear and consistent signals regarding appropriate disciplinary strategies.Yeshttps://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/manuscript-submission-guideline
Evidence for Speech Sound Disorder (SSD) Assessment
Comprehensive studies on aspects related to the assessment of different biomedical parameters (acoustic and laryngeal signs and oral airflow amplitude), as well as parameters for speech disorders, articulation rate, speech inconsistency, and speech stimulability, are essential for better professional practice and to understand misarticulations in children with speech sound disorders (SSDs). Different equipments that enable noninvasive collection and analysis of data have become more common in speech-language pathology practice. Studies recently conducted by our research group have emphasized the evaluation of auditory-perceptual processing by means of assessments of central auditory processing, electrophysiology of hearing—considering that pure-tone, speech audiometry, and tympanometry are routinely used with children during the diagnostic phase and motor speech production performed by acoustic analysis of speech, electroglottography, aerodynamic measures, and ultrasound tongue imaging. This chapter presents the recent advances observed in studies with Brazilian-Portuguese speakers aiming to improve the assessment of speech sound disorders and to understand better the relationship between the different processing mechanisms involved in speech
Sentinel lymph node biopsy in microinvasive ductal carcinoma in situ
Background: Microinvasive breast cancer is an uncommon pathological entity. Owing to the rarity of this condition, its surgical axillary management and overall prognosis remain controversial.
Methods: A database was analysed to identify patients with microinvasive ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) who had surgery for invasive breast cancer at the European Institute of Oncology, Milan, between 1998 and 2010. Women who had undergone axillary staging by sentinel lymph node biopsy were included in the study.
Results: Of 257 women with microinvasive breast cancer who underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB), 226 (87.9 per cent) had negative sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) and 31 had metastatic SLNs. Twelve patients had isolated tumour cells (ITCs), 14 had micrometastases and five had macrometastases in sentinel nodes. Axillary lymph node dissection was performed in 16 of the 31 patients with positive SLNs. After a median follow-up of 11 years, only one regional first event was observed in the 15 patients with positive SLNs who did not undergo axillary lymph node dissection. There were no regional first events in the 16 patients with positive SLNs who had axillary dissection.
Conclusion: Good disease-free and overall survival were found in women with positive SLNs and microinvasive DCIS. This study is in line with studies showing that SLNB inmicroinvasive DCIS may not be useful, and supports the evidence that less surgery can provide the same level of overall survival with better quality of life
Focusing of timelike worldsheets in a theory of strings
An analysis of the generalised Raychaudhuri equations for string world sheets
is shown to lead to the notion of focusing of timelike worldsheets in the
classical Nambu-Goto theory of strings. The conditions under which such effects
can occur are obtained . Explicit solutions as well as the Cauchy initial value
problem are discussed. The results closely resemble their counterparts in the
theory of point particles which were obtained in the context of the analysis of

The Planck-LFI flight model composite waveguides
The Low Frequency Instrument on board the PLANCK satellite is designed to
give the most accurate map ever of the CMB anisotropy of the whole sky over a
broad frequency band spanning 27 to 77 GHz. It is made of an array of 22
pseudo-correlation radiometers, composed of 11 actively cooled (20 K) Front End
Modules (FEMs), and 11 Back End Modules (BEMs) at 300K. The connection between
the two parts is made with rectangular Wave Guides. Considerations of different
nature (thermal, electromagnetic and mechanical), imposed stringent
requirements on the WGs characteristics and drove their design. From the
thermal point of view, the WG should guarantee good insulation between the FEM
and the BEM sections to avoid overloading the cryocooler. On the other hand it
is essential that the signals do not undergo excessive attenuation through the
WG. Finally, given the different positions of the FEM modules behind the focal
surface and the mechanical constraints given by the surrounding structures,
different mechanical designs were necessary. A composite configuration of
Stainless Steel and Copper was selected to satisfy all the requirements. Given
the complex shape and the considerable length (about 1.5-2 m), manufacturing
and testing the WGs was a challenge. This work deals with the development of
the LFI WGs, including the choice of the final configuration and of the
fabrication process. It also describes the testing procedure adopted to fully
characterize these components from the electromagnetic point of view and the
space qualification process they underwent. Results obtained during the test
campaign are reported and compared with the stringent requirements. The
performance of the LFI WGs is in line with requirements, and the WGs were

Volatility return intervals analysis of the Japanese market
We investigate scaling and memory effects in return intervals between price
volatilities above a certain threshold for the Japanese stock market using
daily and intraday data sets. We find that the distribution of return intervals
can be approximated by a scaling function that depends only on the ratio
between the return interval and its mean . We also find memory
effects such that a large (or small) return interval follows a large (or small)
interval by investigating the conditional distribution and mean return
interval. The results are similar to previous studies of other markets and
indicate that similar statistical features appear in different financial
markets. We also compare our results between the period before and after the
big crash at the end of 1989. We find that scaling and memory effects of the
return intervals show similar features although the statistical properties of
the returns are different.Comment: 11 page
Essential Oils of Three Aromatic Plant Species as Natural Herbicides for Environmentally Friendly Agriculture
[EN] Natural herbicides based on essential oils (EOs) extracted from aromatic plants are gaining relevance in contemporary agriculture. Due to their allelopathic properties, they have an inhibitory effect on the germination and growth of different species, having, in general, the advantage of high specificity. For this reason, the analysis of the effects of these natural compounds on noxious weeds is continuously increasing. In the present study, three commercial EOs extracted from Mentha piperita L., Thymbra capitata (L.) Cav. and Santolina chamaecyparissus L. were tested on two invasive weeds with an increasing presence in southern Europe, Erigeron bonariensis L. and Araujia sericifera Brot. Five concentrations (0.125, 0.25, 0.50, 1 and 2 mu L mL(-1)) were tested in a randomized manner for each essential oil and five replicates with 20 seeds each for E. bonariensis and 10 replicates with 10 seeds each for A. sericifera. Two higher concentrations of 4 and 8 mu L mL(-1) of the three EOs were applied with irrigation on the plants of the two species at the vegetative growth stage. The number of replicas for each treatment and species was 7. The results obtained confirmed the significant inhibitory effects on seed germination and early seedling development, especially in E. bonariensis; of the three EOs, peppermint had the strongest effect, completely preventing germination in both species. Multivariate analysis, performed on several morphological traits scored after one month of treatment in young plants, showed a different pattern: the highest inhibition was recorded in A. sericifera and the greatest reduction in growth in the treatment with the highest dose of Santolina EO.
