Background: Allergic eye diseases are the commonest causes of ocular morbidity worldwide. To choose the best therapy in allergic conjunctivitis, understanding of underlying mechanisms implicated in triggering the allergy is very important. Olopatadine with a wide spectrum has proven to be very effective in allergic conjunctivitis. The objective of the study was to compare the efficacy and safety of ophthalmic solutions of olopatadine 0.2% once daily, olopatadine 0.1% twice daily and sodium cromoglycate 2% four times daily in allergic conjunctivitis for 3 weeks. Methods: This was a prospective, single centre study enrolling 304 patients with allergic conjunctivitis attending ophthalmology clinics. Subjects were assessed for ocular signs and symptoms at 3 visits-baseline, week 2, week 3. The change from baseline in the mean scores of itching and redness at 3 weeks was primary outcome variable. Results: The reduction in signs and symptoms were statistically significant in all the three groups (p <0.001). Both the olopatadine receiving groups were better than sodium cromoglycate receiving group in reducing ocular signs and symptoms by pairwise comparison by wilcoxon signed rank test. Conclusions: Olopatadine ophthalmic solution is better than sodium cromoglycate ophthalmic solution in reducing the ocular signs and symptoms in allergic conjunctivitis

Gender norms and relations in an agricultural watershed project in the Parasai-Sindh Watershed, Jhansi/India

Agricultural watershed projects require intertwined technical and social interventions, and accompanying research should aim at blending technical and social sciences (Douthwaite et al. 2001). CGIAR research programs have been designed by centers and partners with such an approach since their first phase from 2010 to 2016; and also in their second phase, 2017 to 2022, this interdisciplinary approach represents their conditions of existence. As many studies have demonstrated, the success of agricultural intervention projects depends on the degree of participatory approach and gendersensitivity in each project stage: planning, design, implementation and monitoring (Leder et al. 2017; Quisumbing et al. 2014). Hence, any intervention project should develop mechanisms trying to avoid the reproduction of gender relations and the exclusion of diverse local knowledge at the community level. Instead, a holistic approach to empower communities with its diverse members should be developed and adjusted continuously. While “participatory” has become a buzzword, it is necessary to demystify respective project stakeholders’ assumptions. As Cleaver (1998: 293) argues, “sectorial bias, instrumental approaches to participation, and an inadequate understanding of social context (...) detract from a truly gendered understanding of water resource management“. Hence it is the role of any intervening organization to understand diverse water needs, and to identify who accesses water and who controls water access. Women are traditionally associated with the domestic use of water, while men are linked to the productive uses of water, whereas several studies have found this division inadequate and far more complex, particularly in the context of primarily male out-migration and the so-called feminization of agriculture. In their study on agrobiodiversity management in Nepals Himalaya, Bhattarai et al. (2015: 129) found that women’s lack of power can be “reinforced by the development organizations’ acceptance of established gender roles that privileges men with new products associated with cash”

Background: Pharmacovigilance is the scientific approach to a drug related problem.  Psychotropic drugs are known to cause several adverse drug reactions (ADRs).  This study aimed to assess the adverse effect profile of 3 second generation antipsychotics-risperidone, olanzapine and quetiapine in patients on monotherapy of any of these second generation antipsychotics. Methods: This was a hospital based cross-sectional study conducted in psychiatric outpatient department of Psychiatry in Father Muller Mental Health Centre, Mangalore. The study sample consisted of patients suffering from schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders according to ICD 10 criteria (F20- F29) and who were maintaining remission  on any one of the second generation antipsychotics viz risperidone, olanzapine or quetiapine. Results: Out of 154 subjects, 68 were on risperidone, 74 were on olanzapine, and 12 were on quetiapine. Most common ADRs reported were increased appetite (26%), weight gain (15%), tremors (14%), fatigue (14%), constipation (14%), dyspepsia (10%), somnolence (12%), decreased appetite (10%). Among these ADRs none of them were preventable and belonged to mild to moderate severity. Causality of adverse events was assessed by Naranjo algorithm; a probability scale for ADR. Severity was assessed by modified Hartwig and Seigel scale. Preventability was assessed using Schumock and Thronton criteria. Conclusions: The most common ADRSs reported with SGAs were increased appetite and weight gain and the frequency of ADRs were higher with subjects receiving risperidone

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a multifactorial metabolic disorder with several microvascular and macrovascular complications. Several plants have been used as dietary adjuvants to conventional drug therapy. Garcinia indica exhibits significant hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic activity. This study was conducted to evaluate the hypoglycemic effects of methanolic extract of seeds of Garcinia indica on blood glucose levels in Streptozotocin induced diabetic albino rats. Methods: Five groups of wistar albino rats (n=6) weighing 150-200g of either sex aged 3-4 months were obtained for the study. After overnight fasting, streptozotocin (50mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally to induce diabetes. Five groups are: Group-1: Non diabetic control group, Group-2: diabetic control, Group-3: diabetic standard, Group-4: test group, Group-5: half of test + half of standard. Fasting blood sugar was estimated on 1, 3, 7, 14 and 28th day by capillary blood glucose method. The data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis. Results: In this study, following Streptozotocin administration the blood glucose levels increased in all groups on day 0. In group 2, blood glucose level gradually increased to 445.6±1.75mg/dl over a period of 4 weeks. Following glibenclamide administration in Group 3 - there was a gradual reduction in blood glucose levels: 269.8mg/dl - day 7 to 101.8mg/dl - week 4. Group 4 - persistent and significant (p<0.05) fall in blood glucose levels reaching upto 107mg/dl at the end of 4 weeks. Group 5 - 330mg/dl on day 1 which significantly (p<0.05) reduced to 101mg/dl on day 28. There was improvement in weight in group 4 and group 5 diabetic rats. Conclusions: The extract alone and in combination with glibenclamide showed significant hypoglycemic activity in comparison to diabetic control group

Document categorization has become an emerging technique in the field of research due to the abundance of documents available in digital form. In this paper we propose language dependent and independent models applicable to categorization of Telugu documents. India is a multilingual country; a provision is made for each of the Indian states to choose their own authorized language for communicating at the state level for legitimate purpose. The availability of constantly increasing amount of textual data of various Indian regional languages in electronic form has accelerated. Hence, the Classification of text documents based on languages is crucial. Telugu is the third most spoken language in India and one of the fifteen most spoken language n the world. It is the official language of the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. A variant of k-nearest neighbors algorithm used for categorization process. The results obtained by the Comparisons of language dependent and independent models

Prevalence of Malnutrition in Adolescent Girls: A Cross-Sectional Study in the Tribal Regions of Telangana

    Get PDF
Malnutrition continues to be one of India's major human development challenge. Despite enormous economic progress achieved in the past two to three decades, malnutrition rates continue to be high especially among children and adolescents in both urban and rural India. The shining India is in shade on these important human development indicators. Adolescents in India especially those residing in tribal regions are at high nutritional risk and face health issues such as anemia and chronic disorders. This paper investigates the prevalence, causes and socio-economic-cultural determinants of malnutrition among 11 to 18 years old adolescent tribal girls from the districts of Adilabad, Komaram-Bheem Asifabad and Mancherial in Telangana state. The cross sectional survey collected data in the year 2017 on socio-economic, demographic, diet and anthropometric indicators from 695 tribal adolescent girls out of 2542 tribal households. The analysis of the anthropometric data reveals that about 67 percent of adolescent girls are undernourished having a BMI of less than 18.5. The results revealed that stunting and thinness was highly prevalent among the tribal adolescent girls. Overweight or obesity is not of particular concern in the studied tribal adolescent girls. These adolescents also lack basic awareness about food, nutrition, health and overall wellbeing. The paper ultimately determines the need for a concerted combination of policies and programs specifically aimed at adolescents in the tribal regions addressing poverty, education, nutrition literacy, empowerment to challenge the existing cultural norms related to food consumption and access to diverse diets both in terms of quantity and quality

A plat form independent embedded web server and its integration into a network of wireless sensor nodes is implemented here. The embedded web server is designed and built as an expansion module for one of the nodes in the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). It allows authorized Internet users to establish two-way communication with the sensor network. The server uses limited available hardware resources to implement an interface to the WSN node. This allows the user to monitor the operation of the WSN remotely, to periodically download the sensed data and to change the operation mode of the network. In this project, by typing the IP-address of LAN on the web browser, the user gets a web page on screen; this page contains all the information about the status of the devices. The user can also control the devices interfaced to the web server by pressing a button provided in the web pag
