Quantum dimer models and exotic orders
We discuss how quantum dimer models may be used to provide "proofs of

The effect of hypothyroidism on the cardiovascular system has been well documented. Cardiac dysfunction due to hypothyroidism manifests as both systolic and diastolic dysfunction of the heart leading to cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure. Its presentation in the form of refractory hypotension is rare. Two Energy Scales and two Quasiparticle Dynamics in the Superconducting State of Underdoped Cuprates
The superconducting state of underdoped cuprates is often described in terms
of a single energy-scale, associated with the maximum of the (d-wave) gap.
Here, we report on electronic Raman scattering results, which show that the gap
function in the underdoped regime is characterized by two energy scales,
depending on doping in opposite manners. Their ratios to the maximum critical
temperature are found to be universal in cuprates. Our experimental results
also reveal two different quasiparticle dynamics in the underdoped
superconducting state, associated with two regions of momentum space: nodal
regions near the zeros of the superconducting gap and antinodal regions. While
antinodal quasiparticles quickly loose coherence as doping is reduced, coherent
nodal quasiparticles persist down to low doping levels. A theoretical analysis
using a new sum-rule allows us to relate the low-frequency-dependence of the
Raman response to the temperature-dependence of the superfluid density, both
controlled by nodal excitations.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure
Two-dimensional Vortices in Superconductors
Superconductors have two key characteristics. They expel magnetic field and
they conduct electrical current with zero resistance. However, both properties
are compromised in high magnetic fields which can penetrate the material and
create a mixed state of quantized vortices. The vortices move in response to an
electrical current dissipating energy which destroys the zero resistance
state\cite{And64}. One of the central problems for applications of high
temperature superconductivity is the stabilization of vortices to ensure zero
electrical resistance. We find that vortices in the anisotropic superconductor
BiSrCaCuO (Bi-2212) have a phase transition from
a liquid state, which is inherently unstable, to a two-dimensional vortex
solid. We show that at high field the transition temperature is independent of
magnetic field, as was predicted theoretically for the melting of an ideal
two-dimensional vortex lattice\cite{Fis80,Gla91}. Our results indicate that the
stable solid phase can be reached at any field as may be necessary for
applications involving superconducting magnets\cite{Has04,Sca04,COHMAG}. The
vortex solid is disordered, as suggested by previous studies at lower
fields\cite{Lee93,Cub93}. But its evolution with increasing magnetic field
displays unexpected threshold behavior that needs further investigation.Comment: 5 pages and 4 figures. submitted to Nature Physic
Connectivity-based parcellation of the thalamus explains specific cognitive and behavioural symptoms in patients with bilateral thalamic infarct
A novel approach based on diffusion tractography was used here to characterise the cortico-thalamic connectivity in two patients, both presenting with an isolated bilateral infarct in the thalamus, but exhibiting partially different cognitive and behavioural profiles. Both patients (G.P. and R.F.) had a pervasive deficit in episodic memory, but only one of them (R.F.) suffered also from a dysexecutive syndrome. Both patients had an MRI scan at 3T, including a T1-weighted volume. Their lesions were manually segmented. T1-volumes were normalised to standard space, and the same transformations were applied to the lesion masks. Nineteen healthy controls underwent a diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) scan. Their DTI data were normalised to standard space and averaged. An atlas of Brodmann areas was used to parcellate the prefrontal cortex. Probabilistic tractography was used to assess the probability of connection between each voxel of the thalamus and a set of prefrontal areas. The resulting map of corticothalamic connections was superimposed onto the patients' lesion masks, to assess whether the location of the thalamic lesions in R.F. (but not in G. P.) implied connections with prefrontal areas involved in dysexecutive syndromes. In G.P., the lesion fell within areas of the thalamus poorly connected with prefrontal areas, showing only a modest probability of connection with the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Conversely, R.F.'s lesion fell within thalamic areas extensively connected with the ACC bilaterally, with the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and with the left supplementary motor area. Despite a similar, bilateral involvement of the thalamus, the use of connectivity-based segmentation clarified that R.F.'s lesions only were located within nuclei highly connected with the prefrontal cortical areas, thus explaining the patient's frontal syndrome. This study confirms that DTI tractography is a useful tool to examine in vivo the effect of focal lesions on interconnectivity brain patterns
MHC class I loci of the Bar-Headed goose (Anser indicus)
MHC class I proteins mediate functions in anti-pathogen defense. MHC diversity has already been investigated by many studies in model avian species, but here we chose the bar-headed goose, a worldwide migrant bird, as a non-model avian species. Sequences from exons encoding the peptide-binding region (PBR) of MHC class I molecules were isolated from liver genomic DNA, to investigate variation in these genes. These are the first MHC class I partial sequences of the bar-headed goose to be reported. A preliminary analysis suggests the presence of at least four MHC class I genes, which share great similarity with those of the goose and duck. A phylogenetic analysis of bar-headed goose, goose and duck MHC class I sequences using the NJ method supports the idea that they all cluster within the anseriforms clade

Subclinical thyroid dysfunction and cognitive decline in old age
<p>Background: Subclinical thyroid dysfunction has been implicated as a risk factor for cognitive decline in old age, but results are inconsistent. We investigated the association between subclinical thyroid dysfunction and cognitive decline in the PROspective Study of Pravastatin in the Elderly at Risk (PROSPER).</p>
<p>Methods: Prospective longitudinal study of men and women aged 70–82 years with pre-existing vascular disease or more than one risk factor to develop this condition (N = 5,154). Participants taking antithyroid medications, thyroid hormone supplementation and/or amiodarone were excluded. Thyroid function was measured at baseline: subclinical hyper- and hypothyroidism were defined as thyroid stimulating hormones (TSH) <0.45 mU/L or >4.50 mU/L respectively, with normal levels of free thyroxine (FT4). Cognitive performance was tested at baseline and at four subsequent time points during a mean follow-up of 3 years, using five neuropsychological performance tests.</p>
<p>Results: Subclinical hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism were found in 65 and 161 participants, respectively. We found no consistent association of subclinical hyper- or hypothyroidism with altered cognitive performance compared to euthyroid participants on the individual cognitive tests. Similarly, there was no association with rate of cognitive decline during follow-up.</p>
<p>Conclusion: We found no consistent evidence that subclinical hyper- or hypothyroidism contribute to cognitive impairment or decline in old age. Although our data are not in support of treatment of subclinical thyroid dysfunction to prevent cognitive dysfunction in later life, only large randomized controlled trials can provide definitive evidence.</p>

Constraints on Non-Newtonian Gravity from Recent Casimir Force Measurements
Corrections to Newton's gravitational law inspired by extra dimensional
physics and by the exchange of light and massless elementary particles between
the atoms of two macrobodies are considered. These corrections can be described
by the potentials of Yukawa-type and by the power-type potentials with
different powers. The strongest up to date constraints on the corrections to
Newton's gravitational law are reviewed following from the E\"{o}tvos- and
Cavendish-type experiments and from the measurements of the Casimir and van der
Waals force. We show that the recent measurements of the Casimir force gave the
possibility to strengthen the previously known constraints on the constants of
hypothetical interactions up to several thousand times in a wide interaction
range. Further strengthening is expected in near future that makes Casimir
force measurements a prospective test for the predictions of fundamental
