When does economic development promote mitigation and why?
Is economic development compatible with mitigation? On the one hand, development should promote effective climate policy by enhancing states’ capacities for mitigation. On the other hand, economic growth creates more demand for production, thereby inhibiting emissions reduction. These arguments are often reconciled in the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) thesis. According to this approach, development initially increases emissions in poor economies, but begins to lower emissions after a country has attained a certain level of development.
The aim of this article is to determine empirically whether the EKC hypothesis seems plausible in light of emissions trends over the birth and implementation of the Kyoto Protocol. Drawing on data from the World Bank World Development Indicators and World Resources Institute Climate Data Explorer, it conducts a large-N investigation of the emissions behaviour of 120 countries from 1990 to 2012. While several quantitative studies have found that economic factors influence emissions activity, this article goes beyond existing research by employing a more sophisticated – multilevel – research design to determine whether economic development: (a) continues to be a significant driver once country-level clustering is accounted for and (b) has different effects on different countries. The results of this article indicate that, even after we account for country-level clustering and hold constant the other main putative drivers of emissions activity, economic development tends to inhibit emissions reduction. They also provide strong evidence that emissions trends resemble the EKC, with development significantly constraining emissions reduction in the South and promoting it in the North
Spatiotemporal complexity of a ratio-dependent predator-prey system
In this paper, we investigate the emergence of a ratio-dependent
predator-prey system with Michaelis-Menten-type functional response and
reaction-diffusion. We derive the conditions for Hopf, Turing and Wave
bifurcation on a spatial domain. Furthermore, we present a theoretical analysis
of evolutionary processes that involves organisms distribution and their
interaction of spatially distributed population with local diffusion. The
results of numerical simulations reveal that the typical dynamics of population
density variation is the formation of isolated groups, i.e., stripelike or
spotted or coexistence of both. Our study shows that the spatially extended
model has not only more complex dynamic patterns in the space, but also chaos
and spiral waves. It may help us better understand the dynamics of an aquatic

String Matching and 1d Lattice Gases
We calculate the probability distributions for the number of occurrences
of a given letter word in a random string of letters. Analytical
expressions for the distribution are known for the asymptotic regimes (i) (Gaussian) and such that is finite
(Compound Poisson). However, it is known that these distributions do now work
well in the intermediate regime . We show that the
problem of calculating the string matching probability can be cast into a
determining the configurational partition function of a 1d lattice gas with
interacting particles so that the matching probability becomes the
grand-partition sum of the lattice gas, with the number of particles
corresponding to the number of matches. We perform a virial expansion of the
effective equation of state and obtain the probability distribution. Our result
reproduces the behavior of the distribution in all regimes. We are also able to
show analytically how the limiting distributions arise. Our analysis builds on
the fact that the effective interactions between the particles consist of a
relatively strong core of size , the word length, followed by a weak,
exponentially decaying tail. We find that the asymptotic regimes correspond to
the case where the tail of the interactions can be neglected, while in the
intermediate regime they need to be kept in the analysis. Our results are
readily generalized to the case where the random strings are generated by more
complicated stochastic processes such as a non-uniform letter probability
distribution or Markov chains. We show that in these cases the tails of the
effective interactions can be made even more dominant rendering thus the
asymptotic approximations less accurate in such a regime.Comment: 44 pages and 8 figures. Major revision of previous version. The

Cellular Adhesion Gene SELP Is Associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Displays Differential Allelic Expression.
In rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a key event is infiltration of inflammatory immune cells into the synovial lining, possibly aggravated by dysregulation of cellular adhesion molecules. Therefore, single nucleotide polymorphisms of 14 genes involved in cellular adhesion processes (CAST, ITGA4, ITGB1, ITGB2, PECAM1, PTEN, PTPN11, PTPRC, PXN, SELE, SELP, SRC, TYK2, and VCAM1) were analyzed for association with RA. Association analysis was performed consecutively in three European RA family sample groups (Nfamilies = 407). Additionally, we investigated differential allelic expression, a possible functional consequence of genetic variants. SELP (selectin P, CD62P) SNP-allele rs6136-T was associated with risk for RA in two RA family sample groups as well as in global analysis of all three groups (ptotal = 0.003). This allele was also expressed preferentially (p<10-6) with a two- fold average increase in regulated samples. Differential expression is supported by data from Genevar MuTHER (p1 = 0.004; p2 = 0.0177). Evidence for influence of rs6136 on transcription factor binding was also found in silico and in public datasets reporting in vitro data. In summary, we found SELP rs6136-T to be associated with RA and with increased expression of SELP mRNA. SELP is located on the surface of endothelial cells and crucial for recruitment, adhesion, and migration of inflammatory cells into the joint. Genetically determined increased SELP expression levels might thus be a novel additional risk factor for RA
Testing for the association of the KIAA1109/Tenr/IL2/IL21 gene region with rheumatoid arthritis in a European family-based study
INTRODUCTION:
A candidate gene approach, in a large case-control association study in the Dutch population, has shown that a 480 kb block on chromosome 4q27 encompassing KIAA1109/Tenr/IL2/IL21 genes is associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Compared with case-control association studies, family-based studies have the added advantage of controlling potential differences in population structure. Therefore, our aim was to test this association in populations of European origin by using a family-based approach.
METHODS:
A total of 1,302 West European white individuals from 434 trio families were genotyped for the rs4505848, rs11732095, rs6822844, rs4492018 and rs1398553 polymorphisms using the TaqMan Allelic discrimination assay (Applied Biosystems). The genetic association analyses for each SNP and haplotype were performed using the Transmission Disequilibrium Test and the genotype relative risk.
RESULTS:
We observed evidence for association of the heterozygous rs4505848-AG genotype with rheumatoid arthritis (P = 0.04); however, no significance was found after Bonferroni correction. In concordance with previous findings in the Dutch population, we observed a trend of undertransmission for the rs6822844-T allele and rs6822844-GT genotype to rheumatoid arthritis patients. We further investigated the five SNP haplotypes of the KIAA1109/Tenr/IL2/IL21 gene region. We observed, as described in the Dutch population, a nonsignificant undertransmission of the AATGG haplotype to rheumatoid arthritis patients.
CONCLUSIONS:
Using a family-based study, we have provided a trend for the association of the KIAA1109/Tenr/IL2/IL21 gene region with rheumatoid arthritis in populations of European descent. Nevertheless, we failed to replicate a significant association of this region in our rheumatoid arthritis family sample. Further investigation of this region, including detection and testing of all variants, is required to confirm rheumatoid arthritis association
