    The Stripe 82 1-2 GHz Very Large Array Snapshot Survey: Multiwavelength Counterparts

    We have combined spectrosopic and photometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with 1.41.4 GHz radio observations, conducted as part of the Stripe 82 1−21-2 GHz Snapshot Survey using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), which covers ∼100\sim100 sq degrees, to a flux limit of 88 μ\muJy rms. Cross-matching the 11 76811\,768 radio source components with optical data via visual inspection results in a final sample of 4 7954\,795 cross-matched objects, of which 1 9961\,996 have spectroscopic redshifts and 2 7992\,799 objects have photometric redshifts. Three previously undiscovered Giant Radio Galaxies (GRGs) were found during the cross-matching process, which would have been missed using automated techniques. For the objects with spectroscopy we separate radio-loud Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and star-forming galaxies (SFGs) using three diagnostics and then further divide our radio-loud AGN into the HERG and LERG populations. A control matched sample of HERGs and LERGs, matched on stellar mass, redshift and radio luminosity, reveals that the host galaxies of LERGs are redder and more concentrated than HERGs. By combining with near-infrared data, we demonstrate that LERGs also follow a tight K−zK-z relationship. These results imply the LERG population are hosted by population of massive, passively evolving early-type galaxies. We go on to show that HERGs, LERGs, QSOs and star-forming galaxies in our sample all reside in different regions of a WISE colour-colour diagram. This cross-matched sample bridges the gap between previous `wide but shallow' and `deep but narrow' samples and will be useful for a number of future investigations.Comment: 17 pages, 19 figures.     Distant galaxy clusters in the COSMOS field found by HIROCS

    We present the first high-redshift galaxy cluster candidate sample from the HIROCS survey found in the COSMOS field. It results from a combination of public COSMOS with proprietary H-band data on a 0.66 square degree part of the COSMOS field and comprises 12 candidates in the redshift range 1.23 < z < 1.55. We find an increasing fraction of blue cluster members with increasing redshift. Many of the blue and even some of the reddest member galaxies exhibit disturbed morphologies as well as signs of interaction.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, in print format, accepted for publication by A&A Letter

    The Diversity of Diffuse Lyα\alpha Nebulae around Star-Forming Galaxies at High Redshift

    We report the detection of diffuse Lyα\alpha emission, or Lyα\alpha halos (LAHs), around star-forming galaxies at z≈3.78z\approx3.78 and 2.662.66 in the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey Bo\"otes field. Our samples consist of a total of ∼\sim1400 galaxies, within two separate regions containing spectroscopically confirmed galaxy overdensities. They provide a unique opportunity to investigate how the LAH characteristics vary with host galaxy large-scale environment and physical properties. We stack Lyα\alpha images of different samples defined by these properties and measure their median LAH sizes by decomposing the stacked Lyα\alpha radial profile into a compact galaxy-like and an extended halo-like component. We find that the exponential scale-length of LAHs depends on UV continuum and Lyα\alpha luminosities, but not on Lyα\alpha equivalent widths or galaxy overdensity parameters. The full samples, which are dominated by low UV-continuum luminosity Lyα\alpha emitters (MUV≳−21M_{\rm UV} \gtrsim -21), exhibit LAH sizes of 5 − 6 \,-\,6\,kpc. However, the most UV- or Lyα\alpha-luminous galaxies have more extended halos with scale-lengths of 7 − 9 \,-\,9\,kpc. The stacked Lyα\alpha radial profiles decline more steeply than recent theoretical predictions that include the contributions from gravitational cooling of infalling gas and from low-level star formation in satellites. On the other hand, the LAH extent matches what one would expect for photons produced in the galaxy and then resonantly scattered by gas in an outflowing envelope. The observed trends of LAH sizes with host galaxy properties suggest that the physical conditions of the circumgalactic medium (covering fraction, HI column density, and outflow velocity) change with halo mass and/or star-formation rates.Comment: published in ApJ, minor proof corrections applie

    Embodied hyperacuity from Bayesian perception: Shape and position discrimination with an iCub fingertip sensor

    Recent advances in modeling animal perception has motivated an approach of Bayesian perception applied to biomimetic robots. This study presents an initial application of Bayesian perception on an iCub fingertip sensor mounted on a dedicated positioning robot. We systematically probed the test system with five cylindrical stimuli offset by a range of positions relative to the fingertip. Testing the real-time speed and accuracy of shape and position discrimination, we achieved sub-millimeter accuracy with just a few taps. This result is apparently the first explicit demonstration of perceptual hyperacuity in robot touch, in that object positions are perceived more accurately than the taxel spacing. We also found substantial performance gains when the fingertip can reposition itself to avoid poor perceptual locations, which indicates that improved robot perception could mimic active perception in animals

    Recruiting for values in healthcare: a preliminary review of the evidence

    Displaying compassion, benevolence and respect, and preserving the dignity of patients are important for any healthcare professional to ensure the provision of high quality care and patient outcomes. This paper presents a structured search and thematic review of the research evidence relating to values-based recruitment within healthcare. Several different databases, journals and government reports were searched to retrieve studies relating to values-based recruitment published between 1998 and 2013, both in healthcare settings and other occupational contexts. There is limited published research related to values-based recruitment directly, so the available theoretical context of values is explored alongside an analysis of the impact of value congruence. The implications for the design of selection methods to measure values is explored beyond the scope of the initial literature search. Research suggests some selection methods may be appropriate for values-based recruitment, such as situational judgment tests (SJTs), structured interviews and multiple-mini interviews (MMIs). Personality tests were also identified as having the potential to compliment other methods (e.g. structured interviews), as part of a values-based recruitment agenda. Methods including personal statements, references and unstructured/'traditional' interviews were identified as inappropriate for values-based recruitment. Practical implications are discussed in the context of values-based recruitment in the healthcare context. Theoretical implications of our findings imply that prosocial implicit trait policies, which could be measured by selection tools such as SJTs and MMIs, may be linked to individuals' values via the behaviours individuals consider to be effective in given situations. Further research is required to state this conclusively however, and methods for values-based recruitment represent an exciting and relatively unchartered territory for further research

    Central Powering of the Largest Lyman-alpha Nebula is Revealed by Polarized Radiation

    High-redshift Lyman-alpha blobs are extended, luminous, but rare structures that appear to be associated with the highest peaks in the matter density of the Universe. Their energy output and morphology are similar to powerful radio galaxies, but the source of the luminosity is unclear. Some blobs are associated with ultraviolet or infrared bright galaxies, suggesting an extreme starburst event or accretion onto a central black hole. Another possibility is gas that is shock excited by supernovae. However some blobs are not associated with galaxies, and may instead be heated by gas falling into a dark matter halo. The polarization of the Ly-alpha emission can in principle distinguish between these options, but a previous attempt to detect this signature returned a null detection. Here we report on the detection of polarized Ly-alpha from the blob LAB1. Although the central region shows no measurable polarization, the polarized fraction (P) increases to ~20 per cent at a radius of 45 kpc, forming an almost complete polarized ring. The detection of polarized radiation is inconsistent with the in situ production of Ly-alpha photons, and we conclude that they must have been produced in the galaxies hosted within the nebula, and re-scattered by neutral hydrogen.Comment: Published in the August 18 issue of Nature. 1750 words, 3 figures, and full Supplementary Information.     Given here is a panel report on the goals and objectives, requirements and recommendations for the investigation of plate motion and deformation. The goals are to refine our knowledge of plate motions, study regional and local deformation, and contribute to the solution of important societal problems. The requirements include basic space-positioning measurements, the use of global and regional data sets obtained with space-based techniques, topographic and geoid data to help characterize the internal processes that shape the planet, gravity data to study the density structure at depth and help determine the driving mechanisms for plate tectonics, and satellite images to map lithology, structure and morphology. The most important recommendation of the panel is for the implementation of a world-wide space-geodetic fiducial network to provide a systematic and uniform measure of global strain

    The use of combined physiological parameters in the early recognition of the deteriorating acute medical patient

    Background: Early warning scores (EWS) are widely used to allow early recognition of the deteriorating patient. We aimed to test their ability to predict major deterioration in medical patients. Methods: Two cohorts were prospectively identified who were admitted to an acute medical admissions unit and to the respiratory unit but not admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU): medical-non ICU and respiratory-non ICU groups. Two further cohorts were retrospectively identified that required ICU admission from these units (medical-ICU and respiratory-ICU groups). Discriminant analysis and receiver operating characteristic curves were used to discriminate between groups, and time relationships were analysed. Results: Heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR) and oxygen saturation (SaO2) were significantly higher in the medical-ICU group than the medical-non ICU group and significantly higher in the respiratory-ICU group than in the respiratorynon ICU group. Discriminant functions incorporating HR, RR and SaO2 performed at least as well as existing EWS systems in predicting ICU admission. Conclusions: Commonly used physiological parameters and existing EWS systems are useful at identifying sick patients. The discriminant functions described here appear to have a role in this setting but require validation in future studies
