Reducing Constraints in a Higher Dimensional Extension of the Randall and Sundrum Model
In order to investigate the phenomenological implications of warped spaces in
more than five dimensions, we consider a dimensional extension to
the Randall and Sundrum model in which the space is warped with respect to a
single direction by the presence of an anisotropic bulk cosmological constant.
The Einstein equations are solved, giving rise to a range of possible spaces in
which the additional spaces are warped. Here we consider models in
which the gauge fields are free to propagate into such spaces. After carrying
out the Kaluza Klein (KK) decomposition of such fields it is found that the KK
mass spectrum changes significantly depending on how the additional
dimensions are warped. We proceed to compute the lower bound on the KK mass
scale from electroweak observables for models with a bulk
gauge symmetry and models with a bulk gauge
symmetry. It is found that in both cases the most favourable bounds are
approximately TeV, corresponding to a mass of the first gauge
boson excitation of about 4-6 TeV. Hence additional warped dimensions offer a

Focal Cerebral Magnetic Resonance Changes Associated with Partial Status Epilepticus
We report 2 patients with transient abnormalities on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) associated with partial status epilepticus (SE). A man with a 4-month history of partial seizures had complex partial SE for 9 days, with left temporal maximum on ictal EEG. Left temporal lobe T 2 signal was increased on MRI during SE, but cerebral MRI was normal 9 weeks later. A woman with “cryptogenic” temporal lobe epilepsy for 16 years had complex partial SE for 1 week, with right temporal maximum on ictal EEG. T 2 Signal was increased over the entire right temporal lobe, extending into the insula, without mass effect, on MRI 1 month after SE ended. Repeat MRI 1 month later showed marked decrease in volume of increased T 2 intensity, without gadolinium enhancement, but with mild mass effect over the right anteroinferomesial temporal areas. A gemistocytic astrocytoma was resected. Focal cerebral MRI abnormalities consistent with cerebral edema may be due to partial SE but also may indicate underlying glioma, even in long-standing partial epilepsy. Neutrino Mixing from Wilson Lines in Warped Space
We consider the generation of the hierarchical charged lepton spectrum and
anarchic neutrino masses and mixing angles in warped extra dimensional models
with Randall-Sundrum metric. We have classified all possible cases giving rise
to realistic spectra for both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. An anarchic
neutrino spectrum requires a convenient bulk symmetry broken by boundary
conditions on both UV and IR branes. We have in particular considered the case
of Majorana neutrinos with a continuous bulk symmetry. To avoid unwanted
massless extra gauge bosons the 4D group should be empty. If the 4D coset is
not vanishing it can provide a Wilson Line description of the neutrino Majorana
mass matrix. We have studied an example based on the bulk gauge group U(3)_{L}
\otimes U(3)_{N} \otimes_{i} U(1)_{E^i} with the Wilson Line in SO(3)_{N}
satisfying all required conditions. A \chi^2-fit to experimental data exhibits
the 95% CL region in the parameter space with no fine-tuning. As a consequence
of the symmetries of the theory there is no tree-level induced lepton flavor
violation and so one-loop processes are consistent with experimental data for
KK-modes about a few TeV. The model is easily generalizable to models with IR

Warped dipole completed, with a tower of Higgs bosons
In the context of warped extra-dimensional models which address both the Planck-weak- and flavor-hierarchies of the Standard Model (SM), it has been argued that certain observables can be calculated within the 5D effective field theory only with the Higgs field propagating in the bulk of the extra dimension, just like other SM fields. The related studies also suggested an interesting form of decoupling of the heavy Kaluza-Klein (KK) fermion states in the warped 5D SM in the limit where the profile of the SM Higgs approaches the IR brane. We demonstrate that a similar phenomenon occurs when we include the mandatory KK excitations of the SM Higgs in loop diagrams giving dipole operators for SM fermions, where the earlier work only considered the SM Higgs (zero mode). In particular, in the limit of a quasi IR-localized SM Higgs, the effect from summing over KK Higgs modes is unsuppressed (yet finite), in contrast to the naive expectation that KK Higgs modes decouple as their masses become large. In this case, a wide range of KK Higgs modes have quasi-degenerate masses and enhanced couplings to fermions relative to those of the SM Higgs, which contribute to the above remarkable result. In addition, we find that the total contribution from KK Higgs modes in general can be comparable to that from the SM Higgs alone. It is also interesting that KK Higgs couplings to KK fermions of the same chirality as the corresponding SM modes have an unsuppressed overall contribution, in contrast to the result from the earlier studies involving the SM Higgs. Our studies suggest that KK Higgs bosons are generally an indispensable part of the warped 5D SM, and their phenomenology such as signals at the LHC are worth further investigation
The Fermion Mass Hierarchy in Models with Warped Extra Dimensions and a Bulk Higgs
The phenomenological implications of allowing the Higgs to propagate in both
AdS and a class of asymptotically AdS spaces are considered. Without
tuning, the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the Higgs is peaked towards the
IR tip of the space and hence such a scenario still offers a potential
resolution to the gauge-hierarchy problem. When the exponent of the Higgs VEV
is approximately two and one assumes order one Yukawa couplings, then the
fermion Dirac mass term is found to range from eV to
GeV in approximate agreement with the observed fermion masses. However, this
result is sensitive to the exponent of the Higgs VEV, which is a free
parameter. This paper offers a number of phenomenological and theoretical
motivations for considering an exponent of two to be the optimal value. In
particular, the exponent is bounded from below by the Breitenlohner-Freedman
bound and the requirement that the dual theory resolves the gauge hierarchy
problem. While, in the model considered, if the exponent is too large,
electroweak symmetry may not be broken. In addition, the holographic method is
used to demonstrate, in generality, that the flatter the Higgs VEV, the smaller
the contribution to the electroweak parameter. In addition, the constraints
from a large class of gauge mediated and scalar mediated flavour changing
neutral currents, will be at minimal values for flatter Higgs VEVs. Some
initial steps are taken to investigate the physical scalar degrees of freedom
that arise from a mixing between the components and the Higgs

The impacts of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and E-commerce on bilateral trade flows
This study examines the impact of Internet and e-commerce adoption on bilateral trade flows using a panel of 21 developing- and least-developed countries and 30 OECD countries. Given the commitment of East African Community (EAC) to become the frontrunner in export-led economy across the African continent, special attention is dedicated to analyse the role of ICT and e-commerce on EAC’s export performance. The empirical results indicate that better access to the modern ICT and adoption of e-commerce applications stimulate bilateral trade flows at various levels. The study notes that the efficient use of ICT equipped with high speed internet and secured servers is a crucial milestone for unlocking the e-trade potentials for developing- and least-developed counties
Establishment of a Transgenic Zebrafish Line for Superficial Skin Ablation and Functional Validation of Apoptosis Modulators In Vivo
BACKGROUND: Zebrafish skin is composed of enveloping and basal layers which form a first-line defense system against pathogens. Zebrafish epidermis contains ionocytes and mucous cells that aid secretion of acid/ions or mucous through skin. Previous studies demonstrated that fish skin is extremely sensitive to external stimuli. However, little is known about the molecular mechanisms that modulate skin cell apoptosis in zebrafish. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This study aimed to create a platform to conduct conditional skin ablation and determine if it is possible to attenuate apoptotic stimuli by overexpressing potential apoptosis modulating genes in the skin of live animals. A transgenic zebrafish line of Tg(krt4:NTR-hKikGR)(cy17) (killer line), which can conditionally trigger apoptosis in superficial skin cells, was first established. When the killer line was incubated with the prodrug metrodinazole, the superficial skin displayed extensive apoptosis as judged by detection of massive TUNEL- and active caspase 3-positive signals. Great reductions in NTR-hKikGR(+) fluorescent signals accompanied epidermal cell apoptosis. This indicated that NTR-hKikGR(+) signal fluorescence can be utilized to evaluate apoptotic events in vivo. After removal of metrodinazole, the skin integrity progressively recovered and NTR-hKikGR(+) fluorescent signals gradually restored. In contrast, either crossing the killer line with testing lines or transiently injecting the killer line with testing vectors that expressed human constitutive active Akt1, mouse constitutive active Stat3, or HPV16 E6 element displayed apoptosis-resistant phenotypes to cytotoxic metrodinazole as judged by the loss of reduction in NTR-hKikGR(+) fluorescent signaling. CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE: The killer/testing line binary system established in the current study demonstrates a nitroreductase/metrodinazole system that can be utilized to conditionally perform skin ablation in a real-time manner, and provides a valuable tool to visualize and quantify the anti-apoptotic potential of interesting target genes in vivo.
