An Assessment of Economic Considerations for Industrial Hemp Production
United States farm policy and programs are governed by the Farm Bill. The 2014 Farm Bill allows for the legal production and research of industrial hemp as long as it meets the standards outlined in the Farm Bill. Although it has a wide range of uses (upwards of 25,000 products use hemp), there is a lack of recent information regarding the economic feasibility of hemp production for the private agricultural sector. Through an extensive search of existing literature, information was gathered to construct an enterprise budget for industrial hemp. Data from the enterprise budget were used in a constrained linear programming model to compare how introducing industrial hemp production could change crop allocations in all 75 counties of Arkansas When industrial hemp was introduced, the total number of acres farmed increased by 2.8% to 4.4%, the statewide profit increased by 0.3% to 18.2%, and rice was the only crop that increased in acreage by 5%. While these results suggest that industrial hemp may be an economically promising crop, there are still hurdles to overcome. The lack of clearance (permitting) by the Drug Enforcement Agency and the absence of hemp processing facilities in the United States are clear roadblocks to hemp production. Once permitting hurdles are overcome, additional research will be needed to identify optimal locations for processing facilities and target markets for hemp goods
Hedging Break-Even Biodiesel Production Costs Using Soybean Oil Futures
The effectiveness of hedging volatile input prices for biodiesel producers is examined over one- to eight-week time horizons. Results reveal that hedging break-even soybean costs with soybean oil futures offers significant reductions in input price risk. The degree of risk reduction is dependent upon type of hedge, naïve or risk-minimizing, and upon time horizon. Web Applet For Predicting Structure And Thermodynamics Of Complex Fluids
Based on a recently introduced analytical strategy [Hollingshead et al., J. Chem. Phys. 139, 161102 (2013)], we present a web applet that can quickly and semi-quantitatively estimate the equilibrium radial distribution function and related thermodynamic properties of a fluid from knowledge of its pair interaction. We describe the applet's features and present two (of many possible) examples of how it can be used to illustrate concepts of interest for introductory statistical mechanics courses: the transition from ideal gas-like behavior to correlated-liquid behavior with increasing density, and the tradeoff between dominant length scales with changing temperature in a system with ramp-shaped repulsions. The latter type of interaction qualitatively captures distinctive thermodynamic properties of liquid water, because its energetic bias toward locally open structures mimics that of water's hydrogen-bond network. Ground state cooling of atoms in optical lattices
We propose two schemes for cooling bosonic and fermionic atoms that are
trapped in a deep optical lattice. The first scheme is a quantum algorithm
based on particle number filtering and state dependent lattice shifts. The
second protocol alternates filtering with a redistribution of particles by
means of quantum tunnelling. We provide a complete theoretical analysis of both
schemes and characterize the cooling efficiency in terms of the entropy. Our
schemes do not require addressing of single lattice sites and use a novel
method, which is based on coherent laser control, to perform very fast

Spin Filter Effects in Mesoscopic Ring Structures
We study the spin-dependent conductance of ballistic mesoscopic ring systems
in the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field. We show that, for the setup
proposed, even a small Zeeman splitting can lead to a considerable spin
polarisation of the current. Making use of a spin-switch effect predicted for
such systems we propose a device of two rings connected in series that in
principle allows for both creating and coherently controlling spin polarized

Quantification Of The Efficiency Of Rumen Microbial Protein Synthesis In Steers Fed Green Tropical Grass
The rate of rumen microbial crude protein (MCP) supply to the intestines is a crucial element in the current rumen models to predict respond of ruminants to a certain diet. Data from tropical pastures always below predicted results from the existing rumen models. Thus, quantification of the rumen MCP supply from tropical grass will improve predictive rate under tropical feeding conditions. Four Brahman crossbred steers (457±20.1 kg) were used in a metabolism study. Pangola grass (Digitaria erianthe cv. Steudal) was harvested every morning and fed to the animals soon after. Parameters measured were EMPS, intake, fractional passage rates, and rumen ammonia concentration. The EMPS was estimated using purine derivative excretion in urine. Crude protein and water soluble carbohydrates content were 6.3 and 7.4% of dry matter (DM) respectively. DM intake was 1.6% live weight. Average rumen ammonia concentration was 69 mg/L whilst rumen passage rates were 7.84 and 6.92 %/h for fluid and solids respectively. EMPS was only 72 g MCP/kg digestible organic matter. It might be concluded that EMPS in steers consuming green pangola grass was below the minimum level for forage diets adopted in the current feeding standards
Comparative trends in hospitalizations for osteoporotic fractures and other frequent diseases between 2000 and 2008
Summary: In Switzerland, the number, incidence, and cost of acute hospitalizations for major osteoporotic fractures (MOF) and major cardiovascular events (MCE) increased in both women and men between 2000 and 2008, although the mean length of stay (LOS) was significantly reduced. Similar trend patterns were observed for hip fractures and strokes (decrease) and nonhip fractures and acute myocardial infarctions (increase). Introduction: The purpose of this study was to compare the trends and epidemiological characteristics of hospitalizations for MOF and other frequent diseases between years2000 and 2008 in Switzerland. Methods: Trends in the number, age-standardized incidence, mean LOS, and cost of hospitalized MOF and MCE (acute myocardial infarction, stroke, and heart failure) were compared in women and men aged ≥45years, based on data from the Swiss Federal Statistical Office. Results: Between 2000 and 2008, the incidence of acute hospitalizations for MOF increased by 3.4% in women and 0.3% in men. In both sexes, a significant decrease in hip fractures (−15.0% and −11.0%) was compensated by a concomitant, significant increase in nonhip fractures (+24.8% and +13.8%). Similarly, the incidence of acute hospitalizations for MCE increased by 4.4% in women and 8.2% in men, as an aggregated result from significantly increasing acute myocardial infarctions and significantly decreasing strokes. While the mean LOS in the acute inpatient setting decreased almost linearly between years2000 and 2008 in all indications, the inpatient costs increased significantly (p < 0.001) for MOF (+30.1% and +42.7%) and MCE (+22.6% and +47.1%) in women and men, respectively. Conclusions: Between years2000 and 2008, the burden of hospitalized osteoporotic fractures to the Swiss healthcare system has continued to increase in both sexes. Fracture hospitalizations between years 2000 and 2007 in Switzerland: a trend analysis
Summary: In Switzerland, the total number and incidence of hospitalizations for major osteoporotic fractures increased between years 2000 and 2007, while hospitalizations due to hip fracture decreased. The cost impact of shorter hospital stays was offset by the increasing cost per day of hospitalization. Introduction: The aim of the study was to establish the trends and epidemiological characteristics of hospitalizations for major osteoporotic fractures (MOF) between years 2000 and 2007 in Switzerland. Methods: Sex- and age-specific trends in the number and crude and age-standardized incidences of hospitalized MOF (hip, clinical spine, distal radius, and proximal humerus) in women and men aged ≥45years were analyzed, together with the number of hospital days and cost of hospitalization, based on data from the Swiss Federal Statistical Office hospital database and population statistics. Results: Between 2000 and 2007, the absolute number of hospitalizations for MOF increased by 15.9% in women and 20.0% in men, mainly due to an increased number of non-hip fractures (+37.7% in women and +39.7% in men). Hospitalizations for hip fractures were comparatively stable (−1.8% in women and +3.3% in men). In a rapidly aging population, in which the number of individuals aged ≥45years grew by 11.1% (women) and 14.6% (men) over the study period, the crude and age-standardized incidences of hospitalizations decreased for hip fractures and increased for non-hip MOF, both in women and men. The length of hospital stay decreased for all MOF in women and men, the cost impact of which was offset by an increase in the daily costs of hospitalization.
