    Development of liquid xenon detectors for medical imaging

    In the present paper, we report on our developments of liquid xenon detectors for medical imaging, positron emission tomography and single photon imaging, in particular.     Os frutos de umbu (Spondias tuberosa Arr. Cam.) maduros são altamente perecíveis, e o aproveitamento deles no estádio de maturação verde, sob a forma de doce é uma interessante alternativa econômica, para o semi-árido nordestino. A conservação da cor, durante o armazenamento, constitui um fator de qualidade dos mais importantes para o consumo, e o presente trabalho objetivou avaliar sua alteração em função de diferentes formulações, embalagens (polipropileno e celofane) e temperaturas (33 e 43°C), por 90 dias de armazenamento. A adição de pectina e/ou xarope de glicose não alterou a luminosidade (L*), mas diminuiu os valores de a* (intensidade do vermelho ) e b*. (intensidade do amarelo). Verificou-se diminuição dos valores de L* a* e b*, notadamente para os doces armazenados à temperatura de 43°C e para a formulação sem adição de pectina. A embalagem não exerceu efeito significativo sobre L*( luminosidade), mas afetou a* e b* aos 90 dias de estocagem, em ambas as temperaturas. Os resultados globais indicaram o uso de pectina e xarope de glicose, embalagens de polipropileno e estocagem à temperaturas mais baixas como sendo as condições mais adequadas para preservação da cor

    Performance of a Chamber for Studying the Liquid Xenon Response to Nuclear Recoils

    The design and performance of a 1.2 liter liquid xenon chamber equipped with 7 two-inch photomultiplier tubes, with the purpose of studying the scintillation response of xenon to gamma-rays and neutrons, is described. Measurements with gamma-rays indicate a high VUV light collection efficiency resulting in ~5.5 photoelectrons per 1 keV of deposited energy. The energy resolution (FWHM) is 18% and 22%, for 122 keV and 511 keV gamma-rays, respectively. An algorithm for the reconstruction of the scintillation coordinates in (x,y) plane was developed and tested.     El dulce de umbu verde presenta elevada sinérisis debido a bajos pH y teor de pectina, lo que reduce la vida util de este producto. El objetivo de este trabajo fue determinar el efecto de la adición de pectina y jarabe de glucosa sobre el color y la textura instrumental, así como verificar la preferencia sensorial entre las formulaciones. Los resultados mostraron que la adición conjunta de pectina y jarabe de glucosa proporciona dulces com textura más firme y de mayor gomosidad, a su vez mantuverieron mejor el color verde amarillento de la pulpa. Los resultados de preferencia mostraron que el produto tuvo un buen índice de aceptabilidad (70%) y no se observaron diferencias significativas entre los productos

    Phase III studies on novel oral anticoagulants for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation -a look beyond the excellent results

    In this overview we address the three phase III studies that compared new oral anticoagulants (dabigatran, rivaroxaban and apixaban) with warfarin in the setting of stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation. Strengths and weaknesses of the studies were examined in detail through indirect comparison. We analyze and comment the inclusion and exclusion criteria, the characteristics of randomized patients, the primary efficacy and safety end points and side effects. All new oral anticoagulants resulted in being non-inferior to vitamin K antagonists in reducing stroke or systemic embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation. Dabigatran 150 mg and apixaban were superior to vitamin K antagonists. Importantly, new oral anticoagulants significantly reduced hemorrhagic stroke in all three studies. Major differences among new oral anticoagulants include the way they are eliminated and side effects. Both dabigatran and apixaban were tested in low- to moderate-risk patients (mean CHADS2 [Congestive heart failure, Hypertension, Age, Diabetes, Stroke] score = 2.1-2.2) whereas rivaroxaban was tested in high-risk patients (mean CHADS2 score = 3.48) and at variance with dabigatran and apixaban was administered once daily. Apixaban significantly reduced mortality from any cause. The choice of a new oral anticoagulant should take into account these and other differences between the new drugs

    El aprovechamiento del umbu (Spondias tuberosa, Arr. Cam.) verde se presenta como alternativa para reducir las pérdidas pos-cosecha en su estado maduro. El efecto de la adición de pectina y jarabe de glucosa sobre las características físicas, químicas y sensoriales en dulce en masa de umbu verde fueron investigados. Resultados mostraron que la adición de pectina y jarabe de glucosa aumentaron el rendimiento en relación a la pulpa y posibilitaron la produción de un dulce de corte a una menor concentración de sólidos solubles; no hubo diferencia significativa para el pH y promovieron el aumento de la actividad de agua. Los resultados del análisis microbiológico de los dulces se mostraron negativos en cuanto a la presencia de coliformes totales (< 3 NPM/g) en todas las diluciones y el conteo de hongos y levaduras fue menor de 10 ufc (unidades formadoras de colónias)/ml, mostrando que los mismos fueron obtenidos dentro de los patrones de higiene recomendados por la legislación

    We use fits to recent published CPLEAR data on neutral kaon decays to π+π\pi^+\pi^- and πeν\pi e\nu to constrain the CPT--violation parameters appearing in a formulation of the neutral kaon system as an open quantum-mechanical system.     A canonical correlation analysis of the association between carcass and ham traits in pigs used to produce dry-cured ham

    The association between carcass and ham traits in a pig population used to produce dry-cured ham was studied using canonical correlation analysis. The carcass traits examined were hot carcass weight (HCW), backfat thickness (BT) and loin depth (LD), and the ham traits studied were gross ham weight (GHW), trimmed ham weight (THW), ham inner layer fat thickness (HIFT), ham outer layer fat thickness (HOFT), pH (pH) and the Göfo value. Carcass and ham traits are not independent. The canonical correlations (r) between the carcass and ham traits at 130 kg were 0.77, 0.24 and 0.20 for the first, second and third canonical pair, respectively, and were all significant (p < 0.01) by the Wilks test. The corresponding canonical correlations between the three canonical variate pairs for the carcass and ham traits at 160 kg were 0.88, 0.42 and 0.14, respectively (p < 0.05 for all, except the third). The correlations between the traits and their canonical variate showed an association among HCW, GHW and THW, and between BT and HOFT. These results indicate that carcass traits should be used to cull pigs that are not suitable for dry-cured ham production
