The Implications of a University Brand: Institutional Brand Alignment and the Experience of Honors Students Attending Clemson University

    Get PDF
In this research, the process by which honors students interact with the institutional brand and become part of their university is examined. Branding and the brand experience is the process by which institutions differentiate themselves from other competing organizations. It was assumed that the degree to which honor students consume the brand impacts not only how they understand their student identity on campus but also their beliefs about their education, their campus community, and their own intellectual and social development. A single-site case study approach was employed to illuminate and provide an in-depth description and analysis of the effects of a college brand on honors students in their campus learning community. The case study and multiple qualitative methods used allowed for a rich description and exploration of the participants experiences, which were triangulated through focus group, photo-elicitation, and document review collection points. In this study it was found that the participants are aware of the institutional brand and their role in maintaining and upholding the values that their university brand supports. Further, they see the necessity of the brand for their institution with regard to recognition on the national landscape. However, the participants shared the belief that the branding efforts on the part of the university do not value the academic learning community which they were recruited to as much as the efforts value athletics and social activities--the implications of which lead the participants to situate themselves between two worlds--the scholars they are and the students the university wishes to see

Effects of a cognitive-behavioral program designed to increase the reading comprehension skills of learning-disabled students

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral approach to reading comprehension instruction. An important component of the intervention was a training course for teachers designed to communicate a conceptual framework for understanding the comprehension deficits of learning disabled (LD) children.;The sample included 39 elementary and middle school students who were identified as learning disabled. Intact classes were assigned to the treatment or control group. The nonequivalent control-group design was used, and data was examined using analysis of covariance. Dependent variables were reading comprehension as measured by the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests and locus of control as assessed by the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale. Two null hypotheses were tested to determine whether differences between the treatment and control groups were significant at the.05 level of confidence.;The data analysis found that students in the cognitive-behavioral treatment showed significant improvement in reading comprehension when compared to control group students who were exposed to their normal routine of reading instruction. The treatment did not affect the locus of control variable.;Recommendations include replication of the study in diverse school systems in order to assess generalizability and delayed posttesting to determine the maintenance of treatment effects. Efforts to increase locus of control may need to be implemented in multiple settings with frequent demonstrations of the role of effort in determining outcomes

The effect of fire disturbance on bee community composition in oak savannah habitat in Southern Ontario, Canada

Determining how bee communities respond to environmental disturbance is crucial for ensuring that the pollination service that bees provide is sustained. Studies have reported that bee communities respond to environmental disturbance; however they have not experimentally tested whether environmental disturbances are important for maintaining bee diversity. Unlike other studies of the impact of fire upon bees, this thesis is based upon experimental tests. I investigate whether fire disturbance plays a significant role in maintaining bee community diversity and composition, and how individual species occupy various ages of post-burn habitat. Freshly burned (< 4 years since fire), intermediate burn (5-10 years since fire), mature burn (15-20 years since fire) and control (no fire) plots were used in two oak savannah remnants in Southern Ontario. Results show fire to be an important environmental disturbance for maintaining bee diversity in the temporal sense, as bee diversity was at its highest in intermediate age burns. Bee diversity increased significantly immediately post fire in fresh habitat but high diversity was short lived whereas mature site bee diversity declined over time. Rank abundance plots and community composition analyses revealed bee communities differed in species composition among replicates of the same age since fire within localities and over time. Bee communities within localities showed similarities in composition. Functional nesting guilds examined were solitary and social ground nesters, cavity nesters, Bombus spp. and cleptoparasites. The relative proportional abundance of species within functional nesting guilds also varied over time and burn site. An examination into how bee species within functional guilds occupy burned habitat indicated that bee species of the same functional guild occupy burned habitat differently. Occupancy modeling of the 12 most common bee species suggests the need for more thorough assessments of the ecologies of individual species in order to fully determine how bee communities respond to environmental disturbances

Autistic Dreaming: a phenomenological study of dreaming and well-being

    Get PDF
Whilst there have been a handful of studies into autism and dreaming, it remains a potentially under-researched area. Studies that have been carried out with autistic participants have demonstrated that there are differences in the sleep architecture that produces dreams and in the content of those dreams. Research into the dreaming experiences of other atypical groups or loosely affiliated communities have shown that this activity may indicate a change in their underlying conditions or may be used to monitor the effectiveness of any therapeutic intervention. If correlations between dreaming and the impact on well-being of autistic people can be demonstrated then this same potential for therapeutic support could be applied. To investigate this gap in knowledge, a Thematic Analysis (TA) approach was used which was later supplemented with an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Three participants were recruited using a Semi Structured Interview Questionnaire (SSIQ) and the interviews transcribed for analysis. Following a review of the feedback around this initial pilot, the data collection was moved to an on line survey based on the SSIQ. This reached a wider group of potential participants and a further 90 questionnaires were completed. These responses were prepared for a parallel analysis, all the responses were explored in the descriptive TA and 6 of these were selected for the idiopathic IPA. The data provided by the on line questionnaire offered some quantitative data which was used to highlight the qualitative findings. Initial findings have shown an appreciation of the therapeutic benefits of dreaming and links to waking well-being in a variety of ways. An unexpected finding has been the role of dreaming in the construct of a sense of personal identity and how it is perceived in the sense of an autistic self-hood. The study will provide suggestions for further research in the area

An efficient iris image thresholding based on binarization threshold in black hole search method

In iris recognition system, the segmentation stage is one of the most important stages where the iris is located and then further segmented into outer and lower boundary of iris region. Several algorithms have been proposed in order to segment the outer and lower boundary of the iris region. The aim of this research is to identify the suitable threshold value in order to locate the outer and lower boundaries using Black Hole Search Method. We chose these methods because of the ineffient features of the other methods in image indetification and verifications. The experiment was conducted using three data set; UBIRIS, CASIA and MMU because of their superiority over others. Given that different iris databases have different file formats and quality, the images used for this work are jpeg and bmp. Based on the experimentation, most suitable threshold values for identification of iris aboundaries for different iris databases have been identified. It is therefore compared with the other methods used by other researchers and found out that the values of 0.3, 0.4 and 0.1 for database UBIRIS, CASIA and MMU respectively are more accurate and comprehensive. The study concludes that threshold values vary depending on the database

Working in the Healthcare sector entails intensive work both physically and psychologically can exert intense psychological and physical pressures. The negative consequences of the stress associated with work in the health care sector pose serious problems not only to the caregivers but also to the quality of patient care. Defining the extent of this problem has value for the health worker and the patients overall well being. Objective: Determine the prevalence of Burnout Syndrome Depression among clinical staff and non-clinical staff in two tertiary hospitals in Maiduguri. Method: It is a comparative study to assess the prevalence of burnout syndrome and depression among clinical and non clinical staff in tertiary health institutions in Maiduguri. Data was collected using the Becks depression inventory and the Mashlach burnout inventory. Results: A total of 420 respondents were recruited for this study with both groups being matched for age and sex. A relatively high level of burnout was observed among the clinical staffs compared to the non clinical (21.5% versus 12.5%; χ =5.31, DF=185 p=0.021). Depression was however, found to be insignificantly higher among the clinical staffs (Twenty 20 (10.7%) vs. 14 (7.6%); χ2=1.096, DF=1, p-value 0.295). There was a significant 2relatedness between having burnout and depression (χ =7.238, DF=1, p=0.007). Conclusion: Burnout syndrome and depression are common among clinical staffs and there is relationship between depression and burnout syndrome. The negative consequences of this combination which is work related can have impact on the outcome of patient management. Findings call for detection and prevention of burnout syndrome among healthcare professionals in order to protect their wellbeing and that of the healthcare industry

Statistical analysis, ciphertext only attack, improvement of generic quasigroup string transformation and dynamic string transformation

    Get PDF
Algebraic functions are the primitives that strengthen the cryptographic algorithms to ensure confidentiality of data and information. There is need for continues development of new and improvement of existing primitives. Quasigroup String transformation is one of those primitives that have many applications in cryptographic algorithms, Hash functions, and Pseudo-Random Number Generators. It is obvious that randomness and unpredictability is the requirement of every Cryptographic primitive. Most of those string transformations have not been implemented properly neither do they have security analysis. Cryptanalysis of existing scheme is as important as building new ones. In this paper, generic Quasigroup sting transformation is analyzed and found vulnerable to Ciphertext-Only-Attack. An adversary can compute the ciphertext to get the plaintext without prior knowledge of the plaintext. Pseudorandom numbers produced with generic string transformation can be reversed back to the original input with little effort. Therefore the generic quasigroup string transformation is compared with recently introduced string transformation and it is expected to provide better randomness and resistant to ciphertext-only-Attack. The proposed string transformation is suitable to one-way functions such as Hash functions, and pseudorandom number generators to mitigate the vulnerability of quasigroup string transformation to Ciphertext-Only-Attack. While the dynamic string transformation increase the difficulty level of predicting the substitution table used. The algorithms will be compared in terms of randomness using NIST statistical test suit, correlation Assessment and frequency Distribution
