First data from DM-Ice17
We report the first analysis of background data from DM-Ice17, a direct-detection dark matter experiment
consisting of 17 kg of NaI(Tl) target material. It was codeployed with IceCube 2457 m deep in the South Pole
glacial ice in December 2010 and is the first such detector operating in the Southern Hemisphere. The
background rate in the 6.5–8.0 keVee region is measured to be 7.9 � 0.4 counts=day=keV=kg. This is
consistent with the expected background from the detector assemblies with negligible contributions from
the surrounding ice. The successful deployment and operation of DM-Ice17 establishes the South Pole ice
as a viable location for future underground, low-background experiments in the Southern Hemisphere. The
detector assembly and deployment are described here, as well as the analysis of the DM-Ice17 backgrounds
based on data from the first two years of operation after commissioning, July 2011–June 2013
Measurement of muon annual modulation and muon-induced phosphorescence in NaI(TI) crystals with DM-Ice17
We report the measurement of muons and muon-induced phosphorescence in DM-Ice17, a NaI(Tl) direct detection dark matter experiment at the South Pole. Muon interactions in the crystal are identified by their observed pulse shape and large energy depositions. The measured muon rate in DM-Ice17 is 2.93±0.04  μ/crystal/day with a modulation amplitude of 12.3±1.7%, consistent with expectation. Following muon interactions, we observe long-lived phosphorescence in the NaI(Tl) crystals with a decay time of 5.5±0.5  s. The prompt energy deposited by a muon is correlated to the amount of delayed phosphorescence, the brightest of which consist of tens of millions of photons. These photons are distributed over tens of seconds with a rate and arrival timing that do not mimic a scintillation signal above 2  keVee. While the properties of phosphorescence vary among individual crystals, the annually modulating signal observed by DAMA cannot be accounted for by phosphorescence with the characteristics observed in DM-Ice17
The first decade of web-based sports injury surveillance: Descriptive epidemiology of injuries in US high school girls' lacrosse (2008-2009 through 2013-2014) and National Collegiate Athletic Association women's lacrosse (2004-2005 through 2013-2014)
Context: The advent of Web-based sports injury surveillance via programs such as the High School Reporting Information Online (HS RIO) system and the National Collegiate Athletic Association Injury Surveillance Program (NCAA-ISP) has aided the acquisition of girls' and women's lacrosse injury data. Objective: To describe the epidemiology of injuries sustained in high school girls' lacrosse in the 2008-2009 through 2013-2014 academic years and collegiate women's lacrosse in the 2004-2005 through 2013-2014-academic years using Web-based sports injury surveillance. Design: Descriptive epidemiology study. Setting: Online injury surveillance from high school girls' (annual average ¼ 55) and collegiate women's (annual average ¼ 19) lacrosse teams. Patients or Other Participants: Female lacrosse players who participated in practices or competitions during the 2008-2009 through 2013-2014 academic years for high school or the 2004-2005 through 2013-2014 academic years for college. Main Outcome Measure(s): Athletic trainers collected time-loss injury (24 hours) and exposure data. We calculated injury rates per 1000 athlete-exposures (AEs), injury rate ratios (IRRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and injury proportions by body site and diagnosis. Results: High school RIO documented 700 time-loss injuries during 481 687 AEs; the NCAA-ISP documented 1027 time-loss injuries during 287 856 AEs. The total injury rate during 2008-2009 through 2013-2014 was higher in college than in high school (2.55 versus 1.45/1000 AEs; IRR ¼ 1.75; 95% CI ¼ 1.54, 1.99). Most injuries occurred during competitions in high school (51.1%) and practices in college (63.8%). Rates were higher during competitions compared with practices in high school (IRR ¼ 2.32; 95% CI ¼ 2.00, 2.69) and college (IRR ¼ 2.38; 95% CI ¼ 2.09, 2.70). Concussion was the most common diagnosis among all high school and most collegiate player positions, and the main mechanism of contact was with a playing apparatus (eg, stick, ball). Ligament sprains were also common (HS RIO practices ¼ 22.2%, competitions ¼ 30.3%; NCAA-ISP practices ¼ 25.5%, competitions ¼ 30.9%). Conclusions: Rates of injury were higher in college versus high school female lacrosse players and in competitions versus practices. Injury-prevention strategies are essential to decrease the incidence and severity of concussions and ligament sprains

Injury rates per 1000 athlete-exposures (AEs), injury rate ratios (IRRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and injury proportions by body site and diagnosis were calculated. Results: High School Reporting Information Online documented 1407 time-loss injuries during 662 960 AEs. The National Collegiate Athletic Association Injury Surveillance Program documented 1882 time-loss injuries during 390 029 AEs. The total injury rate from 2008-2009 through 2013-2014 was higher in college than in high school (3.77 versus 2.12/1000 AEs; IRR ¼ 1.78; 95% CI ¼ 1.63, 1.94). Most injuries occurred during competitions in high school (61.4%) and practices in college (61.4%). Injury rates were higher in competitions compared with practices in high school (IRR ¼ 3.59; 95% CI ¼ 3.23, 4.00) and college (IRR ¼ 3.38; 95% CI ¼ 3.08, 3.71). Lower limb injuries, muscle strains, and ligament sprains were common at both levels. Concussion was the most frequent competition diagnosis for all high school player positions. Conclusions: Rates of time-loss injury were higher in college versus high school and in competitions versus practices. Attention to preventing common lower leg injuries and concussions, especially at the high school level, is essential to decrease their incidence and severity
First search for a dark matter annual modulation signal with NaI(Tl) in the Southern Hemisphere by DM-Ice17
We present the first search for a dark matter annual modulation signal in the Southern Hemisphere conducted with NaI(Tl) detectors, performed by the DM-Ice17 experiment. Nuclear recoils from dark matter interactions are expected to yield an annually modulated signal independent of location within the Earth’s hemispheres. DM-Ice17, the first step in the DM-Ice experimental program, consists of 17 kg of NaI(Tl) located at the South Pole under 2200 m.w.e. overburden of Antarctic glacial ice. Taken over 3.6 years for a total exposure of 60.8 kg yr, DM-Ice17 data are consistent with no modulation in the energy range of 4–20 keV, providing the strongest limits on weakly interacting massive particle dark matter from a direct detection experiment located in the Southern Hemisphere. The successful deployment and stable long-term operation of DM-Ice17 establishes the South Pole ice as a viable location for future dark matter searches and in particular for a high-sensitivity NaI(Tl) dark matter experiment to directly test the DAMA/LIBRA claim of the observation of dark matter
RSPCA and the criminology of social control
This paper contributes to a rethinking of animal abuse control and animal welfare protection in criminology, specifically, and in the social sciences more broadly. We do this, first, through a broad mapping of the institutional control complex around animal abuse in contemporary Britain. Second, we focus on the institutional strategies and practices, past and present, of the main agency of animal protection, and the policing thereof, in this society, namely the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA). In looking back to this charity’s growth since the first decades of the nineteenth century at the time of the birth of modern industrial capitalism and also to its current rationale and practices as a late-modern, corporate organisation, we explore the seeming paradox of a private body taking a lead on the regulation and prosecution of illegalities associated with animal-human relationships. Finally, the ideology and strategy of the RSPCA are explored in the context of the often visceral and culturally influential ‘morality war’ associated with proponents, respectively, of animal rights (‘abolition’) and ‘anthropic’ welfare proponents (‘regulation’ and ‘protection’)

Muon detector for the COSINE-100 experiment
The COSINE-100 dark matter search experiment has started taking physics data with the goal of performing an independent measurement of the annual modulation signal observed by DAMA/LIBRA. A muon detector was constructed by using plastic scintillator panels in the outermost layer of the shield surrounding the COSINE-100 detector. It detects cosmic ray muons in order to understand the impact of the muon annual modulation on dark matter analysis. Assembly and initial performance tests of each module have been performed at a ground laboratory. The installation of the detector in the Yangyang Underground Laboratory (Y2L) was completed in the summer of 2016. Using three months of data, the muon underground flux was measured to be 328 ± 1(stat.)± 10(syst.) muons/m2/day. In this report, the assembly of the muon detector and the results from the analysis are presented
Reproductive risk factors for endometrial cancer among Polish women
We conducted a population-based case–control study of reproductive factors in Warsaw and Ló∂ź, Poland, in 551 incident endometrial cancer cases and 1925 controls. The reproductive variable most strongly related to risk was multiparity, with subjects with three or more births having a 70% lower risk than the nulliparous women. The reduced risk was particularly strong below 55 years of age. Subjects with older ages at a first birth were also at reduced risk even after adjustment for number of births. Ages at last birth or intervals since last birth were not strongly related to risk. Spontaneous abortions were unrelated to risk, but induced abortions were associated with slight risk increases (odds ratios=1.28, 95% confidence intervals 0.8–2.1 for 3+ vs no abortions). The absence of effects on risk of later ages at, or short intervals since, a last birth fails to support the view that endometrial cancer is influenced by mechanical clearance of initiated cells. Alternative explanations for reproductive effects should be sought, including alterations in endogenous hormones
