Excited states in the ThomasâFermi limit: a variational approach
Excited states of BoseâEinstein condensates are considered in the semi-classical (Thomas- Fermi) limit of the GrossâPitaevskii equation with repulsive inter-atomic interactions and a harmonic potential. The relative dynamics of dark solitons (density dips on the localized condensate) with respect to the harmonic potential and to each other is approximated using the averaged Lagrangian method. This permits a complete characterization of the equilibrium positions of the dark solitons as a function of the chemical potential parameter. It also yields an analytical handle on the oscillation frequencies of dark solitons around such equilibria. The asymptotic predictions are generalized for an arbitrary number of dark solitons and are corroborated by numerical computations for 2- and 3-soliton configuration

This 60 minute workshop explores the use of concepts from the healthcare profession, namely SUM â a Shared Understanding of Medicine - to help students negotiate the threshold concepts within Information Literacy. "The shared understanding of medicine is a process whereby people are enabled to understand the best knowledge and resources available to meet their health needs." (Lehman, 2018) The principles of SUM are very similar to Information Literacy; empowering individuals to gather and evaluate information to inform their own decisions and understanding. In a society where most things are available via a quick transaction, be it a tap on a screen or via voice command, any situation where it is not that straightforward are seen as inconvenient or even âwrongâ
The Evolutionary Status of Clusters of Galaxies at z ~ 1
Combined HST, X-ray, and ground-based optical studies show that clusters of
galaxies are largely "in place" by , an epoch when the Universe was
less than half its present age. High resolution images show that elliptical,
S0, and spiral galaxies are present in clusters at redshifts up to . Analysis of the CMDs suggest that the cluster ellipticals formed their
stars several Gyr earlier, near redshift 3. The morphology--density relation is
well established at , with star-forming spirals and irregulars residing
mostly in the outer parts of the clusters and E/S0s concentrated in dense
clumps. The intracluster medium has already reached the metallicity of
present-day clusters. The distributions of the hot gas and early-type galaxies
are similar in clusters, indicating both have largely virialized in
the deepest potentials wells. In spite of the many similarities between
and present-day clusters, there are significant differences. The
morphologies revealed by the hot gas, and particularly the early-type galaxies,
are elongated rather than spherical. We appear to be observing the clusters at
an epoch when the sub-clusters and groups are still assembling into a single
regular cluster. Support for this picture comes from CL0152 where the gas
appears to be lagging behind the luminous and dark mass in two merging
sub-components. Moreover, the luminosity difference between the first and
second brightest cluster galaxies at is smaller than in 93% of
present-day Abell clusters, which suggests that considerable luminosity
evolution through merging has occurred since that epoch. Evolution is also seen

Threshold effect of foreign direct investment on environmental degradation
The aim of this paper is to investigate the threshold effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on environmental degradation. In empirical analysis, FDI and environmental degradation are jointly determined under the given threshold variable and other exogenous variables. Using carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per capita as a proxy for environmental degradation, the results show that increasing FDI worsens CO2 emissions after a threshold level of corruption has been reached. Our results demonstrate that increasing FDI will increase CO2 emissions when the degree of corruptibility is relatively high. The study suggests that further FDI and improved environmental quality are competing rather than compatible objectives in high-corruption countries and are compatible rather than competing objectives in low-corruption countries. Higher trade liberalization in low-corruption countries could contribute to negative environmental consequences because of the increased output or economic activity which results from increased trade. Chemical and biomechanical characterization of hyperhomocysteinemic bone disease in an animal model
BACKGROUND: Classical homocystinuria is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by cystathionine ÎČ-synthase (CBS) deficiency and characterized by distinctive alterations of bone growth and skeletal development. Skeletal changes include a reduction in bone density, making it a potentially attractive model for the study of idiopathic osteoporosis. METHODS: To investigate this aspect of hyperhomocysteinemia, we supplemented developing chicks (n = 8) with 0.6% dl-homocysteine (hCySH) for the first 8 weeks of life in comparison to controls (n = 10), and studied biochemical, biomechanical and morphologic effects of this nutritional intervention. RESULTS: hCySH-fed animals grew faster and had longer tibiae at the end of the study. Plasma levels of hCySH, methionine, cystathionine, and inorganic sulfate were higher, but calcium, phosphate, and other indices of osteoblast metabolism were not different. Radiographs of the lower limbs showed generalized osteopenia and accelerated epiphyseal ossification with distinct metaphyseal and suprametaphyseal lucencies similar to those found in human homocystinurics. Although biomechanical testing of the tibiae, including maximal load to failure and bone stiffness, indicated stronger bone, strength was proportional to the increased length and cortical thickness in the hCySH-supplemented group. Bone ash weights and IR-spectroscopy of cortical bone showed no difference in mineral content, but there were higher Ca(2+)/PO(4)(3- )and lower Ca(2+)/CO(3)(2- )molar ratios than in controls. Mineral crystallization was unchanged. CONCLUSION: In this chick model, hyperhomocysteinemia causes greater radial and longitudinal bone growth, despite normal indices of bone formation. Although there is also evidence for an abnormal matrix and altered bone composition, our finding of normal biomechanical bone strength, once corrected for altered morphometry, suggests that any increase in the risk of long bone fracture in human hyperhomocysteinemic disease is small. We also conclude that the hCySH-supplemented chick is a promising model for study of the connective tissue abnormalities associated with homocystinuria and an important alternative model to the CBS knock-out mouse

A survey of current and anticipated use of standard and specialist equipment by UK optometrists
Purpose: To investigate current and anticipated use of equipment and information technology (IT) in community optometric practice in the UK, and to elicit optometrists' views on adoption of specialist equipment and IT.
Methods: An anonymous online questionnaire was developed, covering use of standard and specialist diagnostic equipment, and IT. The survey was distributed to a random sample of 1300 UK College of Optometrists members.
Results: Four hundred and thirty-two responses were received (response rate = 35%). Enhanced (locally commissioned) or additional/separately contracted services were provided by 73% of respondents. Services included glaucoma repeat measures (30% of respondents), glaucoma referral refinement (22%), fast-track referral for wet age-related macular degeneration (48%), and direct cataract referral (40%). Most respondents (88%) reported using non-contact/pneumo tonometry for intra-ocular pressure measurement, with 81% using Goldmann or Perkins tonometry. The most widely used item of specialist equipment was the fundus camera (74% of respondents). Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) was used by 15% of respondents, up from 2% in 2007. Notably, 43% of those anticipating purchasing specialist equipment in the next 12 months planned to buy an OCT. âPaperlessâ records were used by 39% of respondents, and almost 80% of practices used an electronic patient record/practice management system. Variations in responses between parts of the UK reflect differences in the provision of the General Ophthalmic Services contract or community enhanced services. There was general agreement that specialised equipment enhances clinical care, permits increased involvement in enhanced services, promotes the practice and can be used as a defence in clinico-legal cases, but initial costs and ongoing maintenance can be a financial burden. Respondents generally agreed that IT facilitates administrative flow and secure exchange of health information, and promotes a state-of-the-art practice image. However, use of IT may not save examination time; its dynamic nature necessitates frequent updates and technical support; the need for adequate training is an issue; and security of data is also a concern.
Conclusion: UK optometrists increasingly employ modern equipment and IT services to enhance patient care and for practice management. While the clinical benefits of specialist equipment and IT are appreciated, questions remain as to whether the investment is cost-effective, and how specialist equipment and IT may be used to best advantage in community optometric practice
High-performance hybrid oxide catalyst of manganese and cobalt for low-pressure methanol synthesis
Carbon dioxide capture and use as a carbon feedstock presents both environmental and industrial benefits. Here we report the discovery of a hybrid oxide catalyst comprising manganese oxide nanoparticles supported on mesoporous spinel cobalt oxide, which catalyses the conversion of carbon dioxide to methanol at high yields. In addition, carboncarbon bond formation is observed through the production of ethylene. We document the existence of an active interface between cobalt oxide surface layers and manganese oxide nanoparticles by using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy in the scanning transmission electron microscopy mode. Through control experiments, we find that the catalyst's chemical nature and architecture are the key factors in enabling the enhanced methanol synthesis and ethylene production. To demonstrate the industrial applicability, the catalyst is also run under high conversion regimes, showing its potential as a substitute for current methanol synthesis technologies.open2
Acquisition of the Sda1-encoding bacteriophage does not enhance virulence of the serotype M1 Streptococcus pyogenes strain SF370
The resurgence of invasive disease caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (group A Streptococcus [GAS]) in the past 30 years has paralleled the emergence and global dissemination of the highly virulent M1T1 clone. The GAS M1T1 clone has diverged from the ancestral M1 serotype by horizontal acquisition of two unique bacteriophages, encoding the potent DNase Sda1/SdaD2 and the superantigen SpeA, respectively. The phage-encoded DNase promotes escape from neutrophil extracellular traps and is linked to enhanced virulence of the M1T1 clone. In this study, we successfully used in vitro lysogenic conversion to transfer the Sda1-encoding phage from the M1T1 clonal strain 5448 to the nonclonal M1 isolate SF370 and determined the impact of this horizontal gene transfer event on virulence. Although Sda1 was expressed in SF370 lysogens, no capacity of the phage-converted strain to survive human neutrophil killing, switch to a hyperinvasive covRS mutant form, or cause invasive lethal infection in a humanized plasminogen mouse model was observed. This work suggests that the hypervirulence of the M1T1 clone is due to the unique synergic effect of the M1T1 clone bacteriophage-specific virulence factor Sda1 acting in concert with the M1T1 clone-specific genetic scaffold
Radiocarbon dating of methane and carbon dioxide evaded from a temperate peatland stream
Streams draining peatlands export large quantities of carbon in different chemical forms and
are an important part of the carbon cycle. Radiocarbon (14C) analysis/dating provides unique
information on the source and rate that carbon is cycled through ecosystems, as has recently
been demonstrated at the air-water interface through analysis of carbon dioxide (CO2) lost
from peatland streams by evasion (degassing). Peatland streams also have the potential to
release large amounts of methane (CH4) and, though 14C analysis of CH4 emitted by ebullition
(bubbling) has been previously reported, diffusive emissions have not. We describe methods
that enable the 14C analysis of CH4 evaded from peatland streams. Using these methods, we
investigated the 14C age and stable carbon isotope composition of both CH4 and CO2 evaded
from a small peatland stream draining a temperate raised mire. Methane was aged between
1617-1987 years BP, and was much older than CO2 which had an age range of 303-521 years
BP. Isotope mass balance modelling of the results indicated that the CO2 and CH4 evaded
from the stream were derived from different source areas, with most evaded CO2 originating
from younger layers located nearer the peat surface compared to CH4. The study demonstrates
the insight that can be gained into peatland carbon cycling from a methodological
development which enables dual isotope (14C and 13C) analysis of both CH4 and CO2 collected
at the same time and in the same way
