    Informal and Participatory Cultures in Music Education

    Music provides a forum to explore knowledge, creativity, collaboration and expression as a part of the human condition, in which we relate self-identity, self-knowledge and a socio-cultural context for our experiences (Hodges, 2005). Many youth are able to be involved in participatory cultures, where musical learning occurs easily and without formal intervention, through the development of complex technologies that allow interaction and sharing across the world without the limitations of geographical boundaries. Musical activities are a significant part of many young people’s everyday lives, as they are musically encultured from a young age, yet the majority of their musical participation occurs outside of formalized music education (O’Neill, 2005), through informal learning within popular music (Green, 2007). Contemporary music educators are faced with finding ways for youth to strengthen the connections between music education at school and their musical experiences outside the school walls; and I posit that an understanding of participatory and informal music learning practices might help this challenging endeavour

    Inhibition of VSV Genome RNA Replication but Not Transcription by Monoclonal Antibodies Specific for the Viral P Protein

    AbstractThe growth of vesicular stomatitis virus requires two distinct RNA synthetic events: transcription of messenger RNA molecules and replication of the viral genome RNA. We report the use of a panel of monoclonal antibodies directed against the viral phosphoprotein P in an attempt to assess the role of this protein in RNA synthesis. Using extracts derived from virus-infected cells, we show that several anti-P monoclonal antibodies can have an inhibitory effect on genome RNA replication by binding to a soluble form of the P protein. We also show that the P protein to which one of these antibodies (6D11) is directed is not complexed with the N protein and that the amount of soluble P protein that binds to the 6D11 antibody in immunoprecipitation reactions can be increased by treating extracts with alkaline phosphatase. In addition, phosphatase treatment of infected cell extracts results in an increased level of genome RNA replication. These results suggest that a soluble subspecies of the P protein that functions in genome RNA replication exists in infected cells and that this species of the P protein is not required for transcription

    Exploring Clinician Attitudes Towards Treating Eating Disorders: Bridging Counselor Training Gaps

    Eating disorder (ED) clinicians may face various challenges in practice, including burnout and feelings of incompetence. Several deficits may contribute to these challenges, such as graduate education and treatment gaps. In this study, 109 interdisciplinary clinicians were surveyed regarding their personal attitudes, experiences, and challenges in treating EDs. Among the various results, quantitative and qualitative findings highlighted the lack of graduate education as the primary challenge to effectively treating EDs, as well as the need for more ED research and culturally responsive care. Recommendations to enhance ED education and counselor training are provided, including managing countertransference and advocating for specialized coursework. Lastly, critical directions for future research are discussed

    REDD+ on the rocks? Conflict over forest and politics of justice in Vietnam

    In Vietnam, villagers involved in a REDD+ (reduced emissions from deforestation and forest degradation) pilot protect areas with rocks which have barely a tree on them. The apparent paradox indicates how actual practices differ from general ideas about REDD+ due to ongoing conflict over forest, and how contestations over the meaning of justice are a core element in negotiations over REDD+. We explore these politics of justice by examining how the actors involved in the REDD+ pilot negotiate the particular subjects, dimensions, and authority of justice considered relevant, and show how politics of justice are implicit to practical decisions in project implementation. Contestations over the meaning of justice are an important element in the practices and processes constituting REDD+ at global, national and local levels, challenging uniform definitions of forest justice and how forests ought to be managed

    Extraction and Integration of Genetic Networks from Short-Profile Omic Data Sets.

    Mass spectrometry technologies are widely used in the fields of ionomics and metabolomics to simultaneously profile the intracellular concentrations of, e.g., amino acids or elements in genome-wide mutant libraries. These molecular or sub-molecular features are generally non-Gaussian and their covariance reveals patterns of correlations that reflect the system nature of the cell biochemistry and biology. Here, we introduce two similarity measures, the Mahalanobis cosine and the hybrid Mahalanobis cosine, that enforce information from the empirical covariance matrix of omics data from high-throughput screening and that can be used to quantify similarities between the profiled features of different mutants. We evaluate the performance of these similarity measures in the task of inferring and integrating genetic networks from short-profile ionomics/metabolomics data through an analysis of experimental data sets related to the ionome and the metabolome of the model organism S. cerevisiae. The study of the resulting ionome-metabolome Saccharomyces cerevisiae multilayer genetic network, which encodes multiple omic-specific levels of correlations between genes, shows that the proposed measures can provide an alternative description of relations between biological processes when compared to the commonly used Pearson's correlation coefficient and have the potential to guide the construction of novel hypotheses on the function of uncharacterised genes

    A methodology for the development of a Hinged Ankle-Foot Orthosis compatible with natural joint kinematics

    This work presents a new concept to design Hinged Ankle-Foot Orthoses (HAFOs), based on the definition of a special mechanical articulation able to mimic the physiological behavior of the human ankle joint. Current commercial braces typically do not take into account the natural variability of the ankle joint axis. As the hinge location as well as the rotation axis variability are both relevant for the overall function of the device, and strongly depend on the subject-specific characteristics, a methodology for the development of a HAFO with a floating axis of rotation, based on the in-vivo kinematic analysis of the ankle joint, is here proposed. The kinematic analysis was performed by calculation of the instantaneous and mean helical axes over the collected stereo-photogrammetric data of joint motion. This procedure was tested on a healthy subject, leading to the design and fabrication of a first customized prototype of the orthosis. The performance of this HAFO was experimentally verified by motion analysis. All relevant results are presented, and further possible future improvements of the procedure are discussed

    La enseñanza de las ciencias tiene potencialidades muy significativas para desarrollar competencias que requieren los alumnos para su desempeño en la sociedad, esto se lograría a través de dos procesos largos y complejos que son la alfabetización científica y la educación ambiental. Ambos procesos actúan como herramientas para la toma de medidas. Actualmente los temas relacionados con el medio ambiente, se han posicionado en las agendas sociales, políticas y educativas con gran fuerza. La enseñanza de temas medioambientales, dado su complejidad y su abordaje sistémico, implica la reformulación de las estrategias didácticas a utilizar. En particular, el método de enseñanza por proyectos, puede considerarse como apropiado para tal fin. Es por ello que esta metodología de enseñanza permite vincular temáticas o problemas que sean de interés para los alumnos y que merezcan ser tratados por sí mismos, como lo es el Índice de Calidad de Agua (ICA) del Arroyo del Azul, situado en el centro de la Pcia. de Buenos Aires. Así mismo, en el desarrollo de la presente ponencia se incluye la aplicación del ICA en agua del Arroyo del Azul, con el fin de reconocer su Calidad de Agua. Este tipo de trabajos permite reformular prácticas que lleven a los alumnos a trabajar en forma conjunta con el docente, el trabajo en temas que sean de interés o que tengan un significado en la sociedad y que los alumnos realicen actividades y experiencias que los lleve a comprender y realizar un cambio conceptual.Trabajos del área Ciencias NaturalesDepartamento de Ciencias Exactas y Naturale
