Measurement of residual stress by using focused ion beam and digital image correlation method in thin-sized wires used for steel cords
Residual stress in the axial direction of the steel wires has been measured by using a method based on the combination of the focused ion beam (FIB) milling and digital image correlation software. That is, the residual stress was calculated from the measured displacement field before and after the introduction of a slot along the steel wires. The displacement was obtained by the digital correlation analysis of high-resolution scanning electron micrographs, while the slot was introduced by FIB milling with low energy beam. The fitting of the experimental results to an analytical model with the independent Young's modulus determined allows us to find the residual stress. The complete experimental procedures are described and its feasibilities are also evaluated for the thin-sized steel wires.open112sciescopu
POST-IRRADIATION ANALYSES OF U-MO DISPERSION FUEL RODS OF KOMO TESTS AT HANARO
Since 2001, a series of five irradiation test campaigns for atomized U-Mo dispersion fuel rods, KOMO-1, -2, -3, -4, and -5, has been conducted at HANARO (Korea) in order to develop high performance low enriched uranium dispersion fuel for research reactors. The KOMO irradiation tests provided valuable information on the irradiation behavior of U-Mo fuel that results from the distinct fuel design and irradiation conditions of the rod fuel for HANARO. Full size U-Mo dispersion fuel rods of 4–5 g-U/cm3 were irradiated at a maximum linear power of approximately 105 kW/m up to 85% of the initial U-235 depletion burnup without breakaway swelling or fuel cladding failure. Electron probe microanalyses of the irradiated samples showed localized distribution of the silicon that was added in the matrix during fuel fabrication and confirmed its beneficial effect on interaction layer growth during irradiation. The modifications of U-Mo fuel particles by the addition of a ternary alloying element (Ti or Zr), additional protective coatings (silicide or nitride), and the use of larger fuel particles resulted in significantly reduced interaction layers between fuel particles and Al
Slowly rotating black holes in the Horava-Lifshitz gravity
We investigate slowly rotating black holes in the Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz (HL)
gravity. For and , we find a slowly rotating black
hole of the Kehagias-Sfetsos solution in asymptotically flat spacetimes. We
discuss their thermodynamic properties by computing mass, temperature, angular
momentum, and angular velocity on the horizon.Comment: 12 pages, no figures, version to appear in EPJ
Random wave loads on a long detached breakwater considering diffraction
Battjes (1982) found the loads of short-crested random waves on a long structure decrease with the structure length and also with the obliqueness of wave incidence. These decreases come from the spatial phase difference along the structure. Lee et al. (2010) found that obliquely incident random waves in a nearshore area become directionally asymmetric due to refraction. They also found the asymmetry becomes more significant in shallower waters. Recently, Jung et al. (2011) studied random wave loads on a long structure considering diffraction and directional asymmetry. In this study, we further study random wave loads on a detached breakwater considering diffraction of waves which propagate at both ends of the breakwater. We also consider directional asymmetry. The structure may be placed along the bottom contours in order to protect on-shore incoming waves. In that case, refraction induced random waves may become asymmetric, i.e., on-shore components are more dominant than along-shore ones. Therefore, directional obliqueness on the structure becomes less and thus the wave loads decrease in less degree than the symmetric waves. When waves are obliquely incident on a long structure, the diffract ing waves give forces on the lee side of the structure. The diffracting wave has a spatial phase variation along the lee side which is different from that the obliquely incident wave has on the front side. Thus, the wave loads decrease with the existence of diffract ing waves and also the phase difference between the incident and diffracting waves
Nonpropagation of massive mode on AdS2 in topologically massive gravity
Making use of Achucarro-Ortiz (AO) type of dimensional reduction, we study
the topologically massive gravity with a negative cosmological constant on AdS2
spacetimes. For a constant dilaton, this two-dimensional model also admits
three AdS2 vacuum solutions, which are related to two AdS3 and warped AdS3
backgrounds with an identification upon uplifting three dimensions. We carry
out the perturbation analysis around these backgrounds to find what is a
physically propagating field. However, it turns out that there is no
propagating massive mode on AdS2 background, in contrast to the Kaluza-Klein
(KK) type of dimensional reduction. We note that two dimensionally reduced
actions are different and thus, the non-equivalence of their on-shell
amplitudes is obtained.Comment: 19 pages, version to appear in EPJ
Hypersingular integral equations for arbitrarily located planar cracks in an anisotropic elastic bimaterial
Hypersingular integral equations are derived for the problem of arbitrarily located planar cracks lying in the interior of two dissimilar anisotropic elastic half-spaces which adhere perfectly to each other. The unknown functions in the integral equations are the crack-opening displacements. The integral equations are solved numerically for specific examples involving particular transversely isotropic materials in order to
compute physical quantities of interest such as the crack tip stress intensity factors or the crack energy
CVBEM for a system of second-order elliptic partial differential equations
A boundary element method based on the Cauchy's integral formulae and the theory
of complex hypersingular integrals is devised for the numerical solution of boundary

Quasinormal modes and hidden conformal symmetry in the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole
It is shown that the scalar wave equation in the near-horizon limit respects
a hidden SL(2,R) invariance in the Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) black hole
spacetimes. We use the SL(2,R) symmetry to determine algebraically the purely
imaginary quasinormal frequencies of the RN black hole. We confirm that these
are exactly quasinormal modes of scalar perturbation around the near-extremal
black hole.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure, version to appear in EPJ
The absence of the Kerr black hole in the Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity
We show that the Kerr metric does not exist as a fully rotating black hole
solution to the modified Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity with
and case. We perform it by showing that the Kerr metric does not
satisfy full equations derived from the modified HL gravity.Comment: 35 pages, no figure
Enhancement of electrical properties in Al-doped ZnO films by tuning dc bias voltage during radio frequency magnetron sputtering
Al-doped ZnO (AZO) thin films were deposited at room temperature on glass substrates by rf magnetron sputtering with simultaneous dc bias through an external inductor coil. The deposition rates of AZO films deposited using simultaneous rf and dc power along with an inductor coil were 20 higher than those deposited using only rf power. The effects of simultaneous rf and dc bias voltage during the deposition of AZO films were investigated in terms of their resistivity and compressive stress. It was observed that the AZO films deposited at 120 W rf power with 600 μH inductor coil exhibit the lowest resistivity of 6.71 à 10-4 Ïṡcm. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
