    Controlling Light Through Optical Disordered Media : Transmission Matrix Approach

    We experimentally measure the monochromatic transmission matrix (TM) of an optical multiple scattering medium using a spatial light modulator together with a phase-shifting interferometry measurement method. The TM contains all information needed to shape the scattered output field at will or to detect an image through the medium. We confront theory and experiment for these applications and we study the effect of noise on the reconstruction method. We also extracted from the TM informations about the statistical properties of the medium and the light transport whitin it. In particular, we are able to isolate the contributions of the Memory Effect (ME) and measure its attenuation length

    Dynamical Theory of Artificial Optical Magnetism Produced by Rings of Plasmonic Nanoparticles

    We present a detailed analytical theory for the plasmonic nanoring configuration first proposed in [A. Alu, A. Salandrino, N. Engheta, Opt. Expr. 14, 1557 (2006)], which is shown to provide negative magnetic permeability and negative index of refraction at infrared and optical frequencies. We show analytically how the nanoring configuration may provide superior performance when compared to some other solutions for optical negative index materials, offering a more 'pure' magnetic response at these high frequencies, which is necessary for lowering the effects of radiation losses and absorption. Sensitivity to losses and the bandwidth of operation of this magnetic inclusion are also investigated in details and compared with other available setups.Comment: 34 pages, 3 figure

    Reverse Doppler effect in backward spin waves scattered on acoustic waves

    We report on the observation of reverse Doppler effect in backward spin waves reflected off of surface acoustic waves. The spin waves are excited in a yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film. Simultaneously, acoustic waves are also generated. The strain induced by the acoustic waves in the magnetostrictive YIG film results in the periodic modulation of the magnetic anisotropy in the film. Thus, in effect, a travelling Bragg grating for the spin waves is produced. The backward spin waves reflecting off of this grating exhibit a reverse Doppler shift: shifting down rather than up in frequency when reflecting off of an approaching acoustic wave. Similarly, the spin waves are shifted up in frequency when reflecting from receding acoustic waves.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Regulation of the JNK3 signaling pathway during islet isolation: JNK3 and c-fos as new markers of islet quality for transplantation.

    Stress conditions generated throughout pancreatic islet processing initiate the activation of pro-inflammatory pathways and beta-cell destruction. Our goal is to identify relevant and preferably beta-specific markers to assess the activation of beta-cell stress and apoptotic mechanisms, and therefore the general quality of the islet preparation prior to transplantation. Protein expression and activation were analyzed by Western blotting and kinase assays. ATP measurements were performed by a luminescence-based assay. Oxygen consumption rate (OCR) was measured based on standard protocols using fiber optic sensors. Total RNA was used for gene expression analyzes. Our results indicate that pancreas digestion initiates a potent stress response in the islets by activating two stress kinases, c-Jun N-terminal Kinase (JNK) and p38. JNK1 protein levels remained unchanged between different islet preparations and following culture. In contrast, levels of JNK3 increased after islet culture, but varied markedly, with a subset of preparations bearing low JNK3 expression. The observed changes in JNK3 protein content strongly correlated with OCR measurements as determined by the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient rho [Formula: see text] in the matching islet samples, while inversely correlating with c-fos mRNA expression [Formula: see text]. In conclusion, pancreas digestion recruits JNK and p38 kinases that are known to participate to beta-cell apoptosis. Concomitantly, the islet isolation alters JNK3 and c-fos expression, both strongly correlating with OCR. Thus, a comparative analysis of JNK3 and c-fos expression before and after culture may provide for novel markers to assess islet quality prior to transplantation. JNK3 has the advantage over all other proposed markers to be islet-specific, and thus to provide for a marker independent of non-beta cell contamination

    Comparison of Microbial Changes in Early Re-Developing Biofilms on Natural Teeth and Dentures

    Background and objective Surfaces and fluids can affect oral bacterial colonization. The aim of this study was to compare re-developing biofilms on natural teeth and dentures. Methods Supragingival plaque samples were taken from 55 dentate subjects and the denture teeth of 62 edentulous subjects before and after professional cleaning. Also, samples from 7 “teeth” in randomly selected quadrants were collected after 1, 2, 4 and 7 days of no oral hygiene. Samples were analyzed using checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization. Counts and proportions of 41 bacterial taxa were determined at each time point and significant differences were sought using the Mann-Whitney test. Ecological succession was determined using a modified moving window analysis. Results Mean total DNA probe counts were similar pre-cleaning but were higher in dentate subjects at all post-cleaning visits (pStreptococcus mitis, Streptococcus oralisand Streptococcus mutans, whereas dentate subjects had higher proportions of Tannerella forsythia, Selenomonas noxia and Neisseria mucosa. By 2 days, mean counts of all taxa were higher in natural teeth and most remained higher at 7 days (pS. mitis and S. oralis by 1 day. N. mucosa, Veillonella parvula and Eikenella corrodens increased in both groups but later in edentate samples. Conclusions “Mature” natural and denture teeth biofilms have similar total numbers of bacteria but different species proportions. Post-cleaning biofilm re-development is more rapid and more complex on natural than denture teeth

    A phenomenological approach to the simulation of metabolism and proliferation dynamics of large tumour cell populations

    A major goal of modern computational biology is to simulate the collective behaviour of large cell populations starting from the intricate web of molecular interactions occurring at the microscopic level. In this paper we describe a simplified model of cell metabolism, growth and proliferation, suitable for inclusion in a multicell simulator, now under development (Chignola R and Milotti E 2004 Physica A 338 261-6). Nutrients regulate the proliferation dynamics of tumor cells which adapt their behaviour to respond to changes in the biochemical composition of the environment. This modeling of nutrient metabolism and cell cycle at a mesoscopic scale level leads to a continuous flow of information between the two disparate spatiotemporal scales of molecular and cellular dynamics that can be simulated with modern computers and tested experimentally.Comment: 58 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables, pdf onl

    Unusual scattering effects from tiny spherical particles may be obtained when concentric shells are designed by pairing together 'complementary' double-negative (DNG), single-negative (SNG), and/or standard double-positive (DPS) materials. The local delivery of antimicrobial agents has demonstrated benefit in mild to moderate cases of periimplantitis. This study compared the safety and efficacy of Chlorhexidine gluconate 2.5 mg chip (CHX chips) as an adjunctive treatment to sub-gingival debridement in patients afflicted with periimplantitis. METHODS: A multi-center, randomized, single-blind, two-arm, parallel Phase-3 study was conducted. Periimplantitis patients with implant pocket depths (IPD) of 5-8 mm underwent sub-gingival implant surface debridement followed by repeated bi-weekly supra-gingival plaque removal and Chlorhexidine chips application (ChxC group) for 12 weeks, or similar therapy but without application of ChxC (control group). All patients were followed for 24 weeks. Plaque and gingival indices were measured at every visit while IPD, recession and bleeding on probing were assessed at 8,12,16,24 week. RESULTS: 290 patients were included: 146 in the ChxC group and 144 in the control. At 24 weeks, a significant reduction in IPD (p = 0.01) was measured in the ChxC group (1.76 ± 1.13 mm) compared to the control group (1.54 ± 1.13 mm). IPD reduction of ≥2 mm was found in 59% and 47.2% of the implants in the ChxC and control groups, respectively (p = 0.03). Changes in gingival recession (0.29 ± 0.68 mm vs. 0.15 ± 0.55 mm, p = 0.015) and relative attachment gain (1.47 ± 1.32 mm and 1.39 ± 1.27 mm, p = 0.0017) were significantly larger in the ChxC group. Patients in the ChxC group that were <65 years exhibited significantly better responses (p<0.02); likewise, non-smokers had similarly better response (p <0.02). Both protocols were well tolerated, and no severe treatment-related adverse events were recorded throughout the study. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with periimplantitis that were treated with an intensive treatment protocol of bi-weekly supra-gingival plaque removal and local application of Chlorhexidine chips had greater mean IPD reduction and greater percentile of sites with IPD reduction of ≥2 mm. as compared to bi-weekly supra-gingival plaque removal.
