Path integrals and degrees of freedom in many-body systems and relativistic field theories
The identification of physical degrees of freedom is sometimes obscured in
the path integral formalism, and this makes it difficult to impose some
constraints or to do some approximations. I review a number of cases where the
difficulty is overcame by deriving the path integral from the operator form of
the partition function after such identification has been made.Comment: 15 pages, volume in honor of prof.Yu.A.Simono
Gaucher Disease and Myelofibrosis: A Combined Disease or a Misdiagnosis?
Background: Gaucher disease (GD) and primary myelofibrosis (PMF) share similar clinical and laboratory features, such as cytopenia, hepatosplenomegaly, and marrow fibrosis, often resulting in a misdiagnosis. Case Report: We report here the case of a young woman with hepatosplenomegaly, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia. Based on bone marrow (BM) findings and on liver biopsy showing extramedullary hematopoiesis, an initial diagnosis of PMF was formulated. The patient refused stem cell transplantation from an HLA-identical sibling. Low-dose melphalan was given, without any improvement. Two years later, a BM evaluation showed Gaucher cells. Low glucocerebrosidase and high chitotriosidase levels were indicative for GD. Molecular analysis revealed N370S/complex I mutations. Enzyme replacement therapy with imiglucerase was commenced, resulting in clinical and hematological improvements. Due to an unexpected and persistent organomegaly, PMF combined with GD were suspected. JAK2V617F, JAK2 exon 12, MPL, calreticulin, and exon 9 mutations were negative, and BM examination showed no marrow fibrosis. PMF was excluded. Twenty years after starting treatment, the peripheral cell count and liver size were normal, whereas splenomegaly persisted. Conclusion: In order to avoid a misdiagnosis, a diagnostic algorithm for patients with hepatosplenomegaly combined with cytopenia is suggested
Towards an optical potential for rare-earths through coupled channels
The coupled-channel theory is a natural way of treating nonelastic channels,
in particular those arising from collective excitations, defined by nuclear
deformations. Proper treatment of such excitations is often essential to the
accurate description of reaction experimental data. Previous works have applied
different models to specific nuclei with the purpose of determining
angular-integrated cross sections. In this work, we present an extensive study
of the effects of collective couplings and nuclear deformations on integrated
cross sections as well as on angular distributions in a consistent manner for
neutron-induced reactions on nuclei in the rare-earth region. This specific
subset of the nuclide chart was chosen precisely because of a clear static
deformation pattern. We analyze the convergence of the coupled-channel
calculations regarding the number of states being explicitly coupled. Inspired
by the work done by Dietrich \emph{et al.}, a model for deforming the spherical
Koning-Delaroche optical potential as function of quadrupole and hexadecupole
deformations is also proposed. We demonstrate that the obtained results of
calculations for total, elastic and inelastic cross sections, as well as
elastic and inelastic angular distributions correspond to a remarkably good
agreement with experimental data for scattering energies above around a few
MeV.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. Submitted to the proceedings of the XXXVI

Composite boson dominance in relativistic field theories
We apply a new bosonization technique to relativistic field theories of fermions whose partition function is dominated by bosonic composites, and derive the effective action for these bosons. The derivation respects all symmetries, including gauge invariance, with the exception of Euclidean invariance which must be checked a posteriori. We use a lattice regularization which should make applications to gauge theories easier. We test the method on a fermion field theory with quartic interaction in the limit when the number of flavours N_f is large, and show that it reproduces the exact results in the bosonic sector, namely condensation of a compositeboson with the right mass which breaks the discrete chiral invariance of the model. Moreover we determine the structure function of the condensed composite, whose spatial part turns out to be identical to that of the Cooper pairs of the BCS model of superconductivity
Procedura di confronto tra AEP, INRIM e PTB per la taratura della macchina di taratura di forza per confronto da 5 MN del Laboratorio AEP.
During the period from March to June 2015, a comparison between the primary force standard machine of the Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (INRiM) in Turin and Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig (Germy) and the 5 MN calibration force machine for comparison of the accredited calibration Laboratory of AEP Transducers di Cognento (MO), has been carried out. The comparison, carried out according the calibration guide EURAMET cg-4, Version 2.0, following the Traceability Path A, has been used to perform the calibration of the calibration force machines
The multilevel pairing Hamiltonian versus the degenerate case
We study the pairing Hamiltonian in a set of non degenerate levels. First, we
review in the path integral framework the spontaneous breaking of the U(1)
symmetry occurring in such a system for the degenerate situation. Then the
behaviors with the coupling constant of the ground state energy in the
multilevel and in the degenerate case are compared. Next we discuss, in the
multilevel case, an exact strong coupling expansion for the ground state energy
which introduces the moments of the single particle level distribution. The
domain of validity of the expansion, which is known in the macroscopic limit,
is explored for finite systems and its implications for the energy of the
latter is discussed. Finally the seniority and Gaudin excitations of the
pairing Hamiltonian are addressed and shown to display the same gap in leading
order.Comment: 20 pages, 4 figure
Genome-Wide Datasets of Chicories (Cichorium intybus L.) for Marker-Assisted Crop Breeding Applications: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Cichorium intybus L. is the most economically important species of its genus and among the most important of the Asteraceae family. In chicory, many linkage maps have been produced, several sets of mapped and unmapped markers have been developed, and dozens of genes linked to traits of agronomic interest have been investigated. This treasure trove of information, properly cataloged and organized, is of pivotal importance for the development of superior commercial products with valuable agronomic potential in terms of yield and quality, including reduced bitter taste and increased inulin production, as well as resistance or tolerance to pathogens and resilience to environmental stresses. For this reason, a systematic review was conducted based on the scientific literature published in chicory during 1980-2023. Based on the results obtained from the meta-analysis, we created two consensus maps capable of supporting marker-assisted breeding (MAB) and marker-assisted selection (MAS) programs. By taking advantage of the recently released genome of C. intybus, we built a 639 molecular marker-based consensus map collecting all the available mapped and unmapped SNP and SSR loci available for this species. In the following section, after summarizing and discussing all the genes investigated in chicory and related to traits of interest such as reproductive barriers, sesquiterpene lactone biosynthesis, inulin metabolism and stress response, we produced a second map encompassing 64 loci that could be useful for MAS purposes. With the advent of omics technologies, molecular data chaos (namely, the situation where the amount of molecular data is so complex and unmanageable that their use becomes challenging) is becoming far from a negligible issue. In this review, we have therefore tried to contribute by standardizing and organizing the molecular data produced thus far in chicory to facilitate the work of breeders
Statistical Approach to Fiber Laser Microcutting of NIMONIC® C263 Superalloy Sheet Used in Effusion Cooling System of Aero Engines
AbstractIn order to reduce thermal stress and avoid premature failure of turbine blades in the hot section of aero-engines, a diffusion cooling system is often adopted. This system is a thin sheet, with a closely spaced holes array allowing a uniform cooling of the turbine blade thanks to the evenly distributing of the cooling fluid within its wall. The holes diameters vary in the range of 0.3-1.0 mm. Furthermore, tight tolerances, perpendicular surfaces, no burr, no recast layer, are required. In order to satisfy the hole requirements, typically EDM technique is adopted. However, EDM micro-drilling needs long process time (about 20 s for hole). A promising alternative is laser trepanning. In this technique, a laser beam, with a very small focused spot, is used to make a hole by circular cutting. The hole is obtained in few seconds (<3 s). In this work a preliminary study on laser microcutting of NIMONIC® C263 sheet is presented in order to verify the possibility to adopt a low-power Yb:YAG fiber laser for the microdrilling. Linear cutting tests were carried out on NIMONIC® C263 superalloy sheet, 0.38 mm thick, using a 100 W Yb:YAG fiber laser working in modulated regime. A systematic approach based on Design of Experiment (DoE) has been successfully adopted with the aim to detect which and how the process parameters affect the kerf geometry in term of kerf width, taper angle and tolerances. The examined process parameters were scan speed, on-time, pulse duration and gas pressure. A full factorial design and ANalysis Of VAriance (ANOVA) were applied. Experimental results show the possibility to obtain kerf characterized by narrow width (<100 μm), low taper angle values (<1.8°) and small tolerance (<0.22 μm). Then, the possibility to produce in-tolerance holes was proved
