Addition of toasted baru nut (Dypteryx alata Vog.) and extruded rice bran to sugar cane candy (“rapadura”)
Abstract Different proportions of sugar cane juice, toasted baru nut and extruded rice bran were used in the formulation of sugar cane candies (“rapaduras”), and the effect on color, hardness and proximate composition determined. The best formulation was selected on the basis of composition, hardness and luminosity, and evaluated for sensory acceptance and purchase intent. Simplex design was used to plan the experiment and the limits of the different ingredients. Sugar cane juice has lower values for ash, protein, lipids and total fiber compared to the other ingredients, but it is the ingredient that characterizes the product. The added ingredients affect the physical and chemical characteristics of the “rapaduras”. The hardness of the experimental “rapaduras” varied between 20 and 26.1 N, similar to the traditional product, while protein (from 3.28 to 5.9 g 100 g-1), lipids (from 3.87 to 7.67 g 100 g-1), and total dietary fiber (1.47 to 2.67 g 100 g-1), were above the values of the traditional product. Addition of 15 g 100 g -1of extruded rice bran and 10 g 100 g-1of toasted baru nut to 75 g 100 g -1 of sugar cane juice delivered a product with low microbiological risk and good sensory acceptance. The developed product with extruded rice bran and toasted baru nut has good technological potential, allied with sensory and nutritional advantages, and it can be an alternative to add value to rice by-product and nuts from areas of forest conservation

+ + + HBsAg; 9,1% anti-HBc/anti-HBs e 31,4% anti-HBs isolado. Entre os HBsAg , 9,1% eram HBeAg ; 63,6% anti-HBe e
+ 72,7% VHB-DNA .
The Juruti Municipality, located to the west of the Pará State, possesses major bauxite reserves, the exploration of which
started in 2005. The appearance of some diseases and the increased frequency of others have been influenced by this
exploration, particularly in relation to viral hepatitis. These epidemiological trends are different from those observed
anywhere else worldwide. To define the prevalence of the infections by the hepatitis A, B, C and D viruses in the Juruti
municipal hospital between February 2007 and April 2008, serum samples were collected from patients and analyzed for
serological markers of hepatitis A (HAV), B (HBV), C (HCV) and D (HDV) by immunoenzymatic techniques. In samples
positive for the hepatitis B and C viruses, assays were performed for the detection of HBV-DNA and HCV-RNA by PCR and
RT-PCR, respectively. Among the 1,630 samples collected, the prevalence of total anti-HAV was 85.6%; HBsAg was 0.7%;
+
anti-HBc/anti-HBs was 9.1% and isolated anti-HBs were 31.4%. Among the HBsAg , 9.1% were HBeAg ; 63.6% were anti+
+ HBe and 72.7% were HBV-DNA . Anti-HCV was positive in 0.1% of the samples and positive serologies were not detected
for HDV. Laboratory-based characterization revealed a high prevalence of infection by HAV, detected chronic HBV carriers
and those susceptible to HBV, identified an HCV carrier and revealed the absence of HDV carriers. Local, community-based
epidemiological studies are recommended for comparison to the hospital data presented here
Association of killer cell immunoglobulin-like receptor polymorphisms with chronic hepatitis C and responses to therapy in Brazil
Soroprevalence for Hepatitis C virus is reported as 2.12% in Northern Brazil, with about 50% of the patients exhibiting a sustained virological response (SVR). Aiming to associate polymorphisms in Killer Cell Immunoglobulin-like Receptors (KIR) with chronic hepatitis C and therapy responses we investigated 125 chronic patients and 345 controls. Additionally, 48 ancestry markers were genotyped to control for population stratification. The frequency of the KIR2DL2 and KIR2DL2+HLA-C Asp80 gene and ligand was higher in chronic infected patients than in controls (p < 0.0009, OR = 3.4; p = 0.001, OR = 3.45). In fact, KIR2DL3 is a weaker inhibitor of NK activity than KIR2DL2, which could explain the association of KIR2DL2 with chronic infection. Moreover, KIR2DS2 and KIR2DS2+HLA-C Asp80 (p < 0.0001, OR = 2.51; p = 0.0084, OR = 2.62) and KIR2DS3 (p < 0.0001; OR = 2.57) were associated with chronic infection, independently from KIR2DL2. No differences in ancestry composition were observed between control and patients, even with respect to therapy response groups. The allelic profile KIR2DL2/KIR2DS2/KIR2DS3 was associated with the chronic hepatitis C (p < 0.0001; OR = 3). Furthermore, the patients also showed a higher mean number of activating genes and a lower frequency of the homozygous AA profile, which is likely secondary to the association with non-AA and/or activating genes. In addition, the KIR2DS5 allele was associated with SVR (p = 0.0261; OR = 0.184).The ancestry analysis of samples ruled out any effects of population substructuring and did not evidence interethnic differences in therapy response, as suggested in previous studies

NEOTROPICAL ALIEN MAMMALS: a data set of occurrence and abundance of alien mammals in the Neotropics
Biological invasion is one of the main threats to native biodiversity. For a species to become invasive, it must be voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into a nonnative habitat. Mammals were among first taxa to be introduced worldwide for game, meat, and labor, yet the number of species introduced in the Neotropics remains unknown. In this data set, we make available occurrence and abundance data on mammal species that (1) transposed a geographical barrier and (2) were voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into the Neotropics. Our data set is composed of 73,738 historical and current georeferenced records on alien mammal species of which around 96% correspond to occurrence data on 77 species belonging to eight orders and 26 families. Data cover 26 continental countries in the Neotropics, ranging from Mexico and its frontier regions (southern Florida and coastal-central Florida in the southeast United States) to Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay, and the 13 countries of Caribbean islands. Our data set also includes neotropical species (e.g., Callithrix sp., Myocastor coypus, Nasua nasua) considered alien in particular areas of Neotropics. The most numerous species in terms of records are from Bos sp. (n = 37,782), Sus scrofa (n = 6,730), and Canis familiaris (n = 10,084); 17 species were represented by only one record (e.g., Syncerus caffer, Cervus timorensis, Cervus unicolor, Canis latrans). Primates have the highest number of species in the data set (n = 20 species), partly because of uncertainties regarding taxonomic identification of the genera Callithrix, which includes the species Callithrix aurita, Callithrix flaviceps, Callithrix geoffroyi, Callithrix jacchus, Callithrix kuhlii, Callithrix penicillata, and their hybrids. This unique data set will be a valuable source of information on invasion risk assessments, biodiversity redistribution and conservation-related research. There are no copyright restrictions.
