    Proton structure function at small Q^2

    A fit is made to the data for the proton structure function up to Q^2=10 GeV^2, including the real gamma p total cross-section. It is economical and simple, and its form is motivated by physical principles. It is extrapolated down to very small values of x. Data for the ratio (nu W_2^n/nu W_2^p) are also fitted.     New formulation of the beam propagation method based on the slowly varying envelope approximation

    We combine the theoretical results of some recent publications on the beam propagation method based on the finite difference method (FDBPM) and the slowly varying envelope approximation (SVEA). The use of the SVEA leads to a considerable reduction of the computation time but introduces a fundamental error in the phase velocity of a given mode and also to an error due to the finite step size along the propagation direction. A new, effective scheme is given, which results in a considerable reduction of these errors, without much increase of the computational effort. An error analysis and a few results of applications are given

    A bimodal segment of specific length and thickness between two single mode sections of a planar waveguide can serve as a simple interferometer. The configuration can be realized by etching a wide strip from a dielectric film and forcing a — vertically guided, laterally unguided — beam of light to traverse the strip perpendicularly. A TE-pass polarizer designed on the basis of this concept achieves more that 30dB polarization discrimination with a total length of only 5 micrometers, for air covered Silicon-Oxide/Nitride waveguides at a wavelength of 650 nanometers

    In this article we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of Pareto optimal solutions for infinite horizon cooperative differential games. We consider games defined by non autonomous and discounted autonomous systems. The obtained results are used to analyze the regular indefinite linear quadratic infinite horizon differential game.     Human antibody responses to the plamodium vivax duffy binding protein in Sri Lanka

    Recombinant protein DBP, expressed in a bacculoviral vector, representing the native Plasmodium vivax Duffy Binding Protein (DBP) was used in an indirect ELISA to assay the total anti-DBP antibody (IgM + IgG) responses in Sri Lankan patients with acute vivax malaria.The test populations were selected from two malaria endemic areas, Anuradhapura (n=64) and Kataragama (n=93), and from an area non-endemic for malaria, Colombo (n=91). The prevalences of anti-DBP antibodies were 53%, 38% and 44% from Anuradhapura, Kataragama and Colombo, respectively. A significant difference (Chi-square test, p<0.05) was found between the proportions of responders and non-responders to DBP in Kataragama. Responding proportions of individuals previously exposed (PE) and previously not exposed (PNE) differed significantly only in Colombo (Chi-square test, p<0.05). Significant differences (Mann-Whitney U test, p<0.05) were evident between anti-DBP antibody magnitudes; (i) in Anuradhapura and Kataragama and (ii) of PNE individuals from Colombo and the total responders (both PNE + PE) from Anuradhapura.A significant difference (Mann-Whitney U test, p<0.01) in the end point titers (EPT) between PNE and PE individuals was limited to Colombo. Associations between host factors (age, parasitaemia, number of past infections, the duration between present and penultimate infections and the days of symptoms) and total antibody responses (antibody magnitudes and EPT) were examined (Spearman Correlation coefficient, p<0.05). The significant associations found were between (i) parasitaemia and then total antibody responses of residents in Anuradhapura, (ii) between the parasitaemia group <0.01% and the total antibody response of residents in Kataragama (a negative correlation), (iii) number of past infections in Colombo and (iv) the duration between the present and penultimate infections in Colombo and in Anuradhapura with EPT and the antibody magnitudes, respectively. In conclusion, results of the present study imply that naturally acquired anti-DBP antibodies may play a functional role in the immunity to vivax malaria in Sri Lank

    On the accuracy of the finite difference method for applications in beam propagating techniques

    In this paper it is shown that the inaccuracy in the beam propagation method based on the finite difference scheme, introduced by the use of the slowly varying envelope approximation, can be overcome in an effective way. By the introduction of a perturbation expansion the accuracy can be improved as much as wanted, often nearly without any increase of the computation time. An error analysis is given and the method is illustrated by an example

    "This study evaluates the domestic and international trade and marketing policies in India and analyzes the effects of deregulating domestic markets and liberalizing external trade on the food grain sector. Historically, India's food policy has involved heavy government intervention in all aspects of the food grain market pricing, procurement, stocking, transport and marketing. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) is the principal parastatal agency responsible for marketing food grains within the country and controls nearly 50 percent of the grain markets. An analysis of the performance of the FCI, however, reveals enormous and mounting costs of operations that present a huge financial burden for the Government of India (GOI). This study offers a comparison of the costs and functioning of the FCI with that of private traders, in order to suggest policy options for reform. The results show that private traders operate at costs lower than those incurred by the FCI in both storage and trade, despite several controls and restrictions imposed upon them. Therefore, the finding from this study is that there is a strong case for reform from the efficiency point of view." From Author's Executive Summary
