    Iron isotope compositions of coexisting sulfide and silicate minerals in Sudbury-type ores from the Jinchuan Ni-Cu- sulfide deposit: A perspective on possible core-mantle iron isotope fractionation

    Many studies have shown that the average iron (Fe) isotope compositions of mantle-derived rocks, mantle peridotite and model mantle are close to those of chondrites. Therefore, it is considered that chondrite values represent the bulk Earth Fe isotope composition. However, this is a brave assumption because nearly 90% Fe of the earth is in the core, whose Fe isotope composition is unknown, but is required to construct bulk earth Fe isotope composition. We approach the problem by assuming that the earth’s core separation can be approximated in terms of the Sudbury-type Ni-Cu sulfide mineralization, where sulfide-saturated mafic magmas segregate into immiscible sulfide liquid and silicate liquid. Their density/buoyancy controlled stratification and solidification produced net-textured ores above massive ores and below disseminated ores. The coexisting sulfide minerals (pyrrhotite (Po) > pentlandite (Pn) > chalcopyrite (Cp)) and silicate minerals (olivine (Ol) > orthopyroxene (Opx) > clinopyroxene (Cpx)) are expected to hold messages on Fe isotope fractionation between the two liquids before their solidification. We studied the net-textured ores of the Sudbury-type Jinchuan Ni-Cu sulfide deposit. The sulfide minerals show varying δ56Fe values (-1.37 ~ -0.74‰ (Po) < 0.09 ~ 0.56‰ (Cp) < 0.53 ~ 1.05‰ (Pn), but silicate minerals (Ol, Opx, Cpx) have δ56Fe values close to chondrites (δ56Fe = -0.01±0.01‰). The heavy δ56Fe value (0.52 ~ 0.60‰) of serpentines may reflect Fe isotopes exchange with the coexisting pyrrhotite with light δ56Fe. We ob- tained an equilibrium fractionation factor of Δ56Fesilicate-sulfide = ~ 0.51‰ between reconstructed silicate liquid (δ56Fe = ~ 0.21‰) and sulfide liquid (δ56Fe = ~ -0.30‰), or Δ56Fesilicate-sulfide = ~ 0.36‰ between the weighted mean bulk-silicate minerals (δ56Fe[0.70ol,0.25opx,0.05cpx] = 0.06‰) with weighted mean bulk- sulfide minerals (δ56Fe = ~ -0.30‰). Our study indicates that significant Fe isotope fractionation does take place between silicate and sulfide liquids during the Sudbury-type sulfide mineralization. We hypothesize that significant iron isotope fractionation must have taken place during core-mantle segregation, and the bulk earth may have lighter Fe isotope composition than chondrites although Fe isotope analysis on experimental sulfide-silicate liquids produced under the varying mantle depth conditions is needed to test our results. We advocate the importance of further research on the subject. Given the close Fe-Ni association in the magmatic mineralization and the majority of Earth’s Ni is also in the core, we infer that Ni isotope fractionation must also have taken place during the core separation that needs attention

    Data driven optimal filtering for phase and frequency of noisy oscillations: application to vortex flowmetering

    A new method for extracting the phase of oscillations from noisy time series is proposed. To obtain the phase, the signal is filtered in such a way that the filter output has minimal relative variation in the amplitude (MIRVA) over all filters with complex-valued impulse response. The argument of the filter output yields the phase. Implementation of the algorithm and interpretation of the result are discussed. We argue that the phase obtained by the proposed method has a low susceptibility to measurement noise and a low rate of artificial phase slips. The method is applied for the detection and classification of mode locking in vortex flowmeters. A novel measure for the strength of mode locking is proposed.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure

    Scaling Tests of the Cross Section for Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering

    We present the first measurements of the \vec{e}p->epg cross section in the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) regime and the valence quark region. The Q^2 dependence (from 1.5 to 2.3 GeV^2) of the helicity-dependent cross section indicates the twist-2 dominance of DVCS, proving that generalized parton distributions (GPDs) are accessible to experiment at moderate Q^2. The helicity-independent cross section is also measured at Q^2=2.3 GeV^2.     Exclusive Neutral Pion Electroproduction in the Deeply Virtual Regime

    We present measurements of the ep->ep pi^0 cross section extracted at two values of four-momentum transfer Q^2=1.9 GeV^2 and Q^2=2.3 GeV^2 at Jefferson Lab Hall A. The kinematic range allows to study the evolution of the extracted hadronic tensor as a function of Q^2 and W. Results will be confronted with Regge inspired calculations and GPD predictions. An intepretation of our data within the framework of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering has also been attempted

    Adaptive and reversible resistance to Kras inhibition in pancreatic cancer cells

    Activating mutations in KRAS are the hallmark genetic alterations in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and the key drivers of its initiation and progression. Longstanding efforts to develop novel KRAS inhibitors have been based on the assumption that PDAC cells are addicted to activated KRAS, but this assumption remains controversial. In this study, we analyzed the requirement of endogenous Kras to maintain survival of murine PDAC cells, using an inducible shRNA-based system that enables temporal control of Kras expression. We found that the majority of murine PDAC cells analyzed tolerated acute and sustained Kras silencing by adapting to a reversible cell state characterized by differences in cell morphology, proliferative kinetics, and tumor-initiating capacity. While we observed no significant mutational or transcriptional changes in the Kras-inhibited state, global phosphoproteomic profiling revealed significant alterations in cell signaling, including increased phosphorylation of focal adhesion pathway components. Accordingly, Kras-inhibited cells displayed prominent focal adhesion plaque structures, enhanced adherence properties, and increased dependency on adhesion for viability in vitro. Overall, our results call into question the degree to which PDAC cells are addicted to activated KRAS, by illustrating adaptive non-genetic and non-transcriptional mechanisms of resistance to Kras blockade. However, by identifying these mechanisms, our work also provides mechanistic directions to develop combination strategies that can help enforce the efficacy of KRAS inhibitors

    QCD ghost f(T)-gravity model

    Within the framework of modified teleparallel gravity, we reconstruct a f(T) model corresponding to the QCD ghost dark energy scenario. For a spatially flat FRW universe containing only the pressureless matter, we obtain the time evolution of the torsion scalar T (or the Hubble parameter). Then, we calculate the effective torsion equation of state parameter of the QCD ghost f(T)-gravity model as well as the deceleration parameter of the universe. Furthermore, we fit the model parameters by using the latest observational data including SNeIa, CMB and BAO data. We also check the viability of our model using a cosmographic analysis approach. Moreover, we investigate the validity of the generalized second law (GSL) of gravitational thermodynamics for our model. Finally, we point out the growth rate of matter density perturbation. We conclude that in QCD ghost f(T)-gravity model, the universe begins a matter dominated phase and approaches a de Sitter regime at late times, as expected. Also this model is consistent with current data, passes the cosmographic test, satisfies the GSL and fits the data of the growth factor well as the LCDM model.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1111.726

    Ccaat/enhancer-binding protein delta (C/ebpδ): A previously unrecognized tumor suppressor that limits the oncogenic potential of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cells

    CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein δ (C/EBPδ) is a transcription factor involved in growth arrest and differentiation, which has consequently been suggested to harbor tumor suppressive activities. However, C/EBPδ over-expression correlates with poor prognosis in glioblastoma and promotes genomic instability in cervical cancer, hinting at an oncogenic role of C/EBPδ in these contexts. Here, we explore the role of C/EBPδ in pancreatic cancer. We determined C/EBPδ expression in biopsies from pancreatic cancer patients using public gene-expression datasets and in-house tissue microarrays. We found that C/EBPδ is highly expressed in healthy pancreatic ductal cells but lost in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Furthermore, loss of C/EBPδ correlated with increased lymph node involvement and shorter overall survival in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma patients. In accordance with this, in vitro experiments showed reduced clonogenic capacity and proliferation of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cells following C/EBPδ re-expression, concurrent with decreased sphere formation capacity in soft agar assays. We thus report a previously unrecognized but important tumor suppressor role of C/EBPδ in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. This is of particular interest since only few tumor suppressors have been identified in the context of pancreatic cancer. Moreover, our findings suggest that restoration of C/EBPδ activity could hold therapeutic value in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, although the latter claim needs to be substantiated in future studies
