    Confidence bounds of petrophysical predictions from conventional neural networks

    Neural networks are powerful tools for solving the complex regression problems which abound in geosciences. Estimation of prediction confidence from neural networks is an important area. Many procedures are available to date, but it is often tedious for practitioners to implement such procedures without significant modification of the existing learning algorithms. In many cases, the procedures are also computationally intensive. This paper presents a practical solution using conventional backpropagation networks with simple data pre-processing and post-processing algorithms. The methodology involves conversions of the target outputs into linguistic variables (classes) prior to learning. When the classification network converges, minimum and maximum predictions are derived from the output activations using a simple averaging algorithm. Two examples from petroleum reservoirs are used to demonstrate the proposed methodology. The results show that the confidence bounds of the petrophysical predictions are realistic in both cases. The proposed methodology is generally useful, and can be implemented in simple spreadsheets without altering any existing neural network code

    Detection of Type 1 Prion Protein in Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease

    Molecular typing of the abnormal form of the prion protein (PrP(Sc)) has come to be regarded as a powerful tool in the investigation of the prion diseases. All evidence thus far presented indicates a single PrP(Sc) molecular type in variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (termed type 2B), presumably resulting from infection with a single strain of the agent (bovine spongiform encephalopathy). Here we show for the first time that the PrP(Sc) that accumulates in the brain in variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease also contains a minority type 1 component. This minority type 1 PrP(Sc) was found in all 21 cases of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease tested, irrespective of brain region examined, and was also present in the variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease tonsil. The quantitative balance between PrP(Sc) types was maintained when variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease was transmitted to wild-type mice and was also found in bovine spongiform encephalopathy cattle brain, indicating that the agent rather than the host specifies their relative representation. These results indicate that PrP(Sc) molecular typing is based on quantitative rather than qualitative phenomena and point to a complex relationship between prion protein biochemistry, disease phenotype and agent strain

    CBR Anisotropy from Primordial Gravitational Waves in Two-Component Inflationary Cosmology

    We examine stochastic temperature fluctuations of the cosmic background radiation (CBR) arising via the Sachs-Wolfe effect from gravitational wave perturbations produced in the early universe. We consider spatially flat, perturbed FRW models that begin with an inflationary phase, followed by a mixed phase containing both radiation and dust. The scale factor during the mixed phase takes the form a(η)=c1η2+c2η+c3a(\eta)=c_1\eta^2+c_2\eta+c_3, where cic_i are constants. During the mixed phase the universe smoothly transforms from being radiation to dust dominated. We find analytic expressions for the graviton mode function during the mixed phase in terms of spheroidal wave functions. This mode function is used to find an analytic expression for the multipole moments ⟹al2⟩\langle a_l^2\rangle of the two-point angular correlation function C(Îł)C(\gamma) for the CBR anisotropy. The analytic expression for the multipole moments is written in terms of two integrals, which are evaluated numerically. The results are compared to multipoles calculated for models that are {\it completely} dust dominated at last-scattering. We find that the multipoles ⟹al2⟩\langle a_l^2\rangle of the CBR temperature perturbations for l>10l>10 are significantly larger for a universe that contains both radiation and dust at last-scattering. We compare our results with recent, similar numerical work and find good agreement.     Various spin-polarization states beyond the maximum-density droplet: a quantum Monte Carlo study

    Using variational quantum Monte Carlo method, the effect of Landau-level mixing on the lowest-energy--state diagram of small quantum dots is studied in the magnetic field range where the density of magnetic flux quanta just exceeds the density of electrons. An accurate analytical many-body wave function is constructed for various angular momentum and spin states in the lowest Landau level, and Landau-level mixing is then introduced using a Jastrow factor. The effect of higher Landau levels is shown to be significant; the transition lines are shifted considerably towards higher values of magnetic field and certain lowest-energy states vanish altogether.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures.     The characteristics of a variant strain of Brucella melitensis Rev I

    Circumstantial evidence is presented for the occurrence of a variant of a vaccine strain of B. melitensis Rev 1, designated "FSA"(foreign South African). FSA resembles Rev 1 in its reactions to penicillin and streptomycin but reacts closer to a field strain of B. melitensis as regards dye (thionine and basic fuchsin) sensitivity and colony size. Although colonies of Rev 1 were consistently smaller than other B. melitensis strains, their size was 0,75 mm as opposed to the 1-2 mm reported in the literature, while B. melitensis 16M colonies were 1,25-1,5 mm as opposed to the 3-4 mm previously reported.     Disorder and relaxation mode in the lattice dynamics of PbMg1/3_{1/3}Nb2/3_{2/3}O3_3 relaxor ferroelectric

    The low-energy part of vibration spectrum in PbMg1/3_{1/3}Nb2/3_{2/3}O3_3 relaxor ferroelectric was studied by inelastic neutron scattering. We observed the coexistence of a resolution-limited central peak with strong quasielastic scattering. The line-width of the quasielastic component follows a Γ0+Dq2\Gamma_0+Dq^2 dependence. We find that Γ0\Gamma_0 is temperature-dependent. The relaxation time follows the Arrhenius law well. The presence of a relaxation mode associated with quasi-elastic scattering in PMN indicates that order-disorder behaviour plays an important r\^ole in the dynamics of diffuse phase transitions

    The isolation and serology of the "FSA" Brucella melitensis Rev.1 mutant in a flock of sheep

    A flock of sheep, known to be infected with the "FSA" mutant of Brucella melitensis Rev. 1, was examined serologically and bacteriologically to determine whether any relationship existed which would help in the control of this infection in the field. An attempt was also made to determine whether vertical transmission occurred. Twenty-one out of 62 sheep were bacteriologically positive. The best organs for isolation were the udder, supramammary lymphnodes and uterus. No significant relationship could be shown between the complement fixation test and bacterial isolation. The absence of any relationship between serological and bacteriological results agrees with a short-lived infection. None of the 24 lambs sacrificed at 5 months showed either serological reactions or were bacteriologically positive, thus no vertical transmission could be shown.The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi.     Systematics of K-pi=8(-) isomers in N=74 nuclei

    An isomer with a half-life of 6+/-1 mu s has been observed in the N=74 nucleus Gd-138, populated following the reaction Cd-106(Cl-35,p2n)Gd-138. Th, isomer decays via a 583 keV EI transition with a hindrance per degree of K forbiddenness, f(v)=24. This value is similar to the values measured for the N=74 isotones Nd-134 and Sm-136 but markedly different from that measured for Ba-130. This suggests that there is some change in structure across the N=74 isotones and possible explanations of this feature are discussed
