    Powerful proteins from polyp possessing predators

    Cnidarians are soft bodied animals possessing complex venom systems which have evolved to allow for the capture of arthropod and vertebrate prey, as well as to defend themselves against such predators. The effects of these venoms on humans, as a result of envenomation, has been studied for many decades, whereas the possibility of using these proteins to fight human disease is in its infancy. Drug discovery utilisation of Cnidarian venoms has been hampered by availability of animals and suitable extraction techniques that allow for study of such protein toxins. Studies of toxins that have been suitably purified for drug discovery have, by in large, only investigated target engagement and negated to investigate other drug like properties such as absorption, dispersion, metabolism, and excretion (ADME). This chapter will review the sourcing of Cnidaria for drug discovery, extraction of venom components, actions of venoms on drug relevant targets and their suitability as drug like molecules

    The structure of K- and Cs-monolayers on Cu(0 0 1): diffraction experiments far from the Bragg point

    The intensity analysis along the crystal truncation rods has been used to analyse in situ the adsorption behaviour and the structure of K and Cs on Cu(0 0 1) at submonolayer coverages and room temperature. Up to about 0.25 ML K atoms adsorb in hollow sites followed by formation of a quasihexagonal superstructure. In contrast, for Cs adsorption the data can be interpreted by the formation of quasihexagonal Cs islands that grow with increasing coverage. For K an effective radius of 1.6(1) Ã… independent of coverage is determined. For Cs we fnd d = 2.1 (1) Ã… after formation of the quasihexagonal superstructure

    David Tracy claims that the contemporary emergence of a sociological imagination is as crucial for theological self-consciousness as the earlier rise of historical consciousness among theologians. The authors are of the opinion that the rapid and fundamental social changes in South African society over the past few years have accelerated this "emergence of a sociological imagination" amongst South African theologians.     On the characterization of periodic generalized Horadam sequences

    The Horadam sequence is a direct generalization of the Fibonacci numbers in the complex plane, which depends on a family of four complex parameters: two recurrence coefficients and two initial conditions. In this article a computational matrix-based method is developed to formulate necessary and sufficient conditions for the periodicity of generalized complex Horadam sequences, which are generated by higher order recurrences for arbitrary initial conditions. The asymptotic behaviour of generalized Horadam sequences generated by roots of unity is also examined, along with upper boundaries for the disc containing periodic orbits. Some applications are suggested, along with a number of future research directions

    Magnetic phase separation in ordered alloys

    We present a lattice model to study the equilibrium phase diagram of ordered alloys with one magnetic component that exhibits a low temperature phase separation between paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases. The model is constructed from the experimental facts observed in Cu3−x_{3-x}AlMnx_{x} and it includes coupling between configurational and magnetic degrees of freedom which are appropriated for reproducing the low temperature miscibility gap. The essential ingredient for the occurrence of such a coexistence region is the development of ferromagnetic order induced by the long-range atomic order of the magnetic component. A comparative study of both mean-field and Monte Carlo solutions is presented. Moreover, the model may enable the study of the structure of the ferromagnetic domains embedded in the non-magnetic matrix. This is relevant in relation to phenomena such as magnetoresistance and paramagnetism.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted in Phys. Rev.
