Manufacturing high purity chalcogenide glass
Chalcogenide materials are finding increasing interest as an active material in next generation optical and electronic devices. There wide range of properties, ranging from photosensitivity, ability to host rare earth ions, electrical conductivity, phase change, exceptional optical non-linearity's to name only a few are fueling this interest. Moreover, the ability to synthesize these materials in numerous forms as diverse as 2D monolayers, microspheres, optical fibres, nanowires, thin films as well as bulk glass ingots of over a kilogram in size ensures their application space is vast.We began preparation of chalcogenides, largely based on sulphides, in 1992 and since then have built up an extensive capability for their purification, synthesis and fabrication in various forms. A key aspect of this facility is the ability to process in a flowing atmosphere of hydrogen sulphide which provided the capability of synthesis from elemental, oxide or halide precursors, processing through various chemical vapour deposition reactions as well as post purification. In this talk we describe the range of materials we synthesize highlighting high purity sulphide bulk glass and transition metal di-chalcogenides for electronic applications, crystalline semiconductors for solar cell applications, low power phase change memory devices, switchable metamaterial devices as well as traditional chalcogenides glass and optical fibre
First order optical potentials and 25 to 40 MeV proton elastic scattering
The differential cross sections and analyzing powers from the elastic
scattering of 25 and 40 MeV protons from many nuclei have been studied.
Analyses have been made using a fully microscopic model of proton-nucleus
scattering seeking to establish a means appropriate for use in analyses of
radioactive beam scattering from hydrogen with ion energies 25A and 40A MeV.Comment: 9 pages, RevTeX, 4 figure
Stain Removal from a Pigmented Silicone Maxillofacial Elastomer
The removal of environmental stains from a pigmented maxillofacial elastomer was carried out by solvent extraction under network swelling. Silastic 44210 was pigmented with 11 maxillofacial pigments prior to staining. Samples were stained with lipstick, methylene blue, and disclosing solution. These stains were then removed by solvent extraction with 1,1,1-trichloroethane. Color parameter measurements both before and after staining and after solvent extraction demonstrated the effectiveness of removing these stains by solvent extraction while causing little or no change in the color of the pigmented samples.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/68071/2/10.1177_00220345820610081601.pd
Stain Resistance of Maxillofacial Materials
The resistance of three silicone and one polyvinyl chloride maxillofacial materials to staining by tea, lipstick, and disclosing solution was measured by reflectance spectrophotometry. Elite male Flat jockeys display lower bone density and lower resting metabolic rate than their female counterparts: implications for athlete welfare
To test the hypothesis that daily weight-making is more problematic to health in male compared with female jockeys, we compared the bone-density and resting metabolic rate (RMR) in weight-matched male and female Flat-jockeys. RMR (kcal.kg-1 lean mass) was lower in males compared with females as well as lower bone-density Z-scores at the hip and lumbar spine. Data suggest the lifestyle of male jockeys’ compromise health more severely than females, possibly due to making-weight more frequently
Impedance adaptation for optimal robot–environment interaction
In this paper, impedance adaptation is investigated for robots interacting with unknown environments. Impedance control is employed for the physical interaction between robots and environments, subject to unknown and uncertain environments dynamics. The unknown environments are described as linear systems with unknown dynamics, based on which the desired impedance model is obtained. A cost function that measures the tracking error and interaction force is defined, and the critical impedance parameters are found to minimize it. Without requiring the information of the environments dynamics, the proposed impedance adaptation is feasible in a large number of applications where robots physically interact with unknown environments. The validity of the proposed method is verified through simulation studies
Level-Spacing Distributions and the Bessel Kernel
The level spacing distributions which arise when one rescales the Laguerre or
Jacobi ensembles of hermitian matrices is studied. These distributions are
expressible in terms of a Fredholm determinant of an integral operator whose
kernel is expressible in terms of Bessel functions of order . We derive
a system of partial differential equations associated with the logarithmic
derivative of this Fredholm determinant when the underlying domain is a union
of intervals. In the case of a single interval this Fredholm determinant is a

Fredholm Determinants, Differential Equations and Matrix Models
Orthogonal polynomial random matrix models of NxN hermitian matrices lead to
Fredholm determinants of integral operators with kernel of the form (phi(x)
psi(y) - psi(x) phi(y))/x-y. This paper is concerned with the Fredholm
determinants of integral operators having kernel of this form and where the
underlying set is a union of open intervals. The emphasis is on the
determinants thought of as functions of the end-points of these intervals. We
show that these Fredholm determinants with kernels of the general form
described above are expressible in terms of solutions of systems of PDE's as
long as phi and psi satisfy a certain type of differentiation formula. There is
also an exponential variant of this analysis which includes the circular

Description of the inelastic collision of two solitary waves for the BBM equation
We prove that the collision of two solitary waves of the BBM equation is
inelastic but almost elastic in the case where one solitary wave is small in
the energy space. We show precise estimates of the nonzero residue due to the
collision. Moreover, we give a precise description of the collision phenomenon

Proceedings of: Second World Summit on the Knowledge Society (WSKS 2009), Chania, Crete, Greece, September 16-18, 2009.The importance of what have been termed the "soft skills" for the professional development of IT professionals is beyond any doubt. Taking account of this circumstance, the objective of the current research may be phrased as two separate questions. In the first place, determining the importance which IT related degree students place on these types of competencies for their professional future. In the second place, the importance which the development of the mentioned competencies has been given during their studies. The realization of an empirical study has fulfilled the two objectives described. The results demonstrate, on the one side, the moderate relevance which students assign to interpersonal competencies, especially emotional competencies, in contrast to the international curricular recommendations and studies concerning labor markets. On the other hand, the results indicate the scarce emphasis which lecturers have placed on the development of such competencies.Publicad
