Sulphur abundances in disk stars: A correlation with silicon
We have performed new determinations of sulphur and silicon abundances for a sample of 26 disk stars based on high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra. The results indicate a solar [S/Fe] for [Fe/H] > −0.3, below which [S/Fe] increases to ~0.25 dex at [Fe/H] = −1.0. We find that there is a good correlation between [S/H] and [Si/H], indicating the same nucleosynthetic origin of the two elements. It seems that the ratio of sulphur to silicon does not depend on metallicity for [Fe/H] > −1.0. The implications of these results on models for the nucleosynthesis of a-capture elements and the chemical evolution of the Galaxy are discussed. Equivariant cohomology and analytic descriptions of ring isomorphisms
In this paper we consider a class of connected closed -manifolds with a
non-empty finite fixed point set, each of which is totally non-homologous
to zero in (or -equivariantly formal), where . With the
help of the equivariant index, we give an explicit description of the
equivariant cohomology of such a -manifold in terms of algebra, so that we
can obtain analytic descriptions of ring isomorphisms among equivariant
cohomology rings of such -manifolds, and a necessary and sufficient
condition that the equivariant cohomology rings of such two -manifolds are
isomorphic. This also leads us to analyze how many there are equivariant
cohomology rings up to isomorphism for such -manifolds in 2- and
3-dimensional cases.Comment: 20 pages, updated version with two references adde
An Overview of the Field of Semiotics
AbstractThe quantitative increase in recent years of research into semiotics, among other methods of reading works of art, is notable. Since semiotics is the act of reading as based on a meta-language that is constructed and grounded in logic, understanding the methods applied by the field requires time and experience. In addition, the application of models that differ in relation to each other under different schools of thought and under different names makes its yet more difficult to comprehend the field of semiotics. Despite the different models that are available, approaches display certain commonalities as they are born of the same foundations and objectives. This study will aim to pinpoint the common aspects of the intellectual foundations, methods, objectives and research limitations of the different schools of thought and the models that are involved in the study of semiotics
Propagation inhibition and wave localization in a 2D random liquid medium
Acoustic propagation and scattering in water containing many parallel
air-filled cylinders is studied. Two situations are considered and compared:
(1) wave propagating through the array of cylinders, imitating a traditional
experimental setup, and (2) wave transmitted from a source located inside the
ensemble. We show that waves can be blocked from propagation by disorders in
the first scenario, but the inhibition does not necessarily imply wave
localization. Furthermore, the results reveal the phenomenon of wave
localization in a range of frequencies.Comment: Typos in Fiures are correcte
Haemophilus influenzae type b reemergence after combination immunization
An increase in Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) in
British children has been linked to the widespread use of a
diphtheria/tetanus/acellular pertussis combination vaccine
(DTaP-Hib). We measured anti-polyribosyl-ribitol phos-
phate antibody concentration and avidity before and after a
Hib booster in 176 children 2–4 years of age who had
received 3 doses of DTP-Hib (either DT whole cell pertus-
sis-Hib or DTaP-Hib) combination vaccine in infancy. We
also measured pharyngeal carriage of Hib. Antibody con-
centrations before and avidity indices after vaccination
were low (geometric mean concentration 0.46μg/mL, 95%
confidence interval [CI] 0.36–0.58; geometric mean avidity
index 0.16, 95% CI 0.14–0.18) and inversely related to the
number of previous doses of DTaP-Hib (p = 0.02 and
p<0.001, respectively). Hib was found in 2.1% (95% CI
0.7%–6.0%) of study participants. Our data support an
association between DTaP-Hib vaccine combinations and
clinical Hib disease through an effect on antibody concen-
tration and avidit

Wave scattering from self-affine surfaces
Electromagnetic wave scattering from a perfectly reflecting self-affine
surface is considered. Within the framework of the Kirchhoff approximation, we
show that the scattering cross section can be exactly written as a function of
the scattering angle via a centered symmetric Levy distribution for general
roughness amplitude, Hurst exponent and wavelength of the incident wave. The
amplitude of the specular peak, its width and its position are discussed as
well as the power law decrease (with scattering angle) of the scattering cross
section.Comment: RevTeX, 4 pages including 2 figures. Submitted Phys. Rev. Let
