Studies on the growth of voids in amorphous glassy polymers
Numerical studies are presented of the localized deformations around voids in amorphous glassy polymers. This problem is relevant for polymer-rubber blends once cavitation has taken place inside the rubber particles. The studies are based on detailed finite element analyses of axisymmetric or planar cell models, featuring large local strains and recent material models that describe time-dependent yield, followed by intrinsic softening and subsequent strain hardening due to molecular orientation. The results show that plasticity around the void occurs by a combination of two types of shear bands, which we refer to as wing and dog-ear bands, respectively. Growth of the void occurs by propagation of the shear bands, which is driven by orientational hardening. Also discussed is the evolution of the local hydrostatic stress distribution between voids during growth, in view of possible craze initiation.
Demonstration of Normal and Abnormal Fetal Brains Using 3D Printing from In Utero MR Imaging Data
3D printing is a new manufacturing technology that produces high-fidelity models of complex structures from 3D computer-aided design data. Radiology has been particularly quick to embrace the new technology because of the wide access to 3D datasets. Models have been used extensively to assist orthopedic, neurosurgical, and maxillofacial surgical planning. In this report, we describe methods used for 3D printing of the fetal brain by using data from in utero MR imaging
Superconducting properties of RuSr2GdCu2O8 studied by SQUID magnetometry
For polycrystalline RuSr2GdCu2O8 (Ru-1212), distinct peaks have been reported
in d.c. magnetization in the superconducting state of the sample. Sr2GdRuO6
(Sr-2116), the precursor for the preparation of Ru-1212, shows similar peaks in
the same temperature regime. Based on measurements performed on both bulk and
powdered samples of Ru-1212 and Sr-2116, we exclude the possibility, that the
observed behavior of the magnetization of Ru-1212 is due to Sr-2116 impurities.
The effect is related to the superconductivity of Ru-1212, but it is not an
intrinsic property of this compound. We provide evidence that the observation
of magnetization peaks in the superconducting state of Ru-1212 is due to flux
motion generated by the movement of the sample in an inhomogeneous field,
during the measurement in the SQUID magnetometer. We propose several tests,
that help to decide, whether the features observed in a SQUID magnetization
measurement of Ru-1212 represent a property of the compound or not.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figure
Diagrammatic proof of the BCFW recursion relation for gluon amplitudes in QCD
We present a proof of the Britto-Cachazo-Feng-Witten tree-level recursion
relation for gluon amplitudes in QCD, based on a direct equivalence between
BCFW decompositions and Feynman diagrams. We demonstrate that this equivalence
can be made explicit when working in a convenient gauge. We exhibit that gauge
invariance and the particular structure of Yang-Mills vertices guarantees the
validity of the BCFW construction.Comment: 24 pages, 33 figure
Effects of superimposed hydrostatic pressure on fracture in round bars under tension
AbstractThe effect of superimposed hydrostatic pressure on fracture in round bars under tension is studied numerically using the finite element method based on the Gurson damage model. It is demonstrated that while the superimposed hydrostatic pressure has no noticeable effect on necking, it increases the fracture strain due to the fact that a superimposed pressure delays or completely eliminates the nucleation, growth and coalescence of microvoids or microcracks. The experimentally observed transition of the fracture surface, from the cup-cone mode under atmospheric pressure to a slant structure under high pressure, is numerically reproduced. It is numerically proved that the superimposed hydrostatic pressure has no effect on necking for a damage-free round bar under tension
On Interpolation and Resampling of Discrete Data
This letter introduces a new representation of discrete signals based on the mathematical notions of functionals and continuous dual spaces. A new and more general sampling theorem is also suggested. Next, the problems of interpolating and resampling discrete signals are addressed; and a general solution using functional interpolation—which is applicable to many different settings—is proposed. Families of resampling filters dubbed de Boor-Ron filters that use de Boor-Ron interpolation are introduced, and their numerical realization is discussed. Some applications of this research are suggested
Acute inhibition of MEK suppresses congenital melanocytic nevus syndrome in a murine model driven by activated NRAS and Wnt signaling
Congenital melanocytic nevus (CMN) syndrome is the association of pigmented melanocytic nevi with extra-cutaneous features, classically melanotic cells within the central nervous system, most frequently caused by a mutation of NRAS codon 61. This condition is currently untreatable and carries a significant risk of melanoma within the skin, brain, or leptomeninges. We have previously proposed a key role for Wnt signaling in the formation of melanocytic nevi, suggesting that activated Wnt signaling may be synergistic with activated NRAS in the pathogenesis of CMN syndrome. Some familial pre-disposition suggests a germ-line contribution to CMN syndrome, as does variability of neurological phenotypes in individuals with similar cutaneous phenotypes. Accordingly, we performed exome sequencing of germ-line DNA from patients with CMN to reveal rare or undescribed Wnt-signaling alterations. A murine model harboring activated NRASQ61K and Wnt signaling in melanocytes exhibited striking features of CMN syndrome, in particular neurological involvement. In the first model of treatment for this condition, these congenital, and previously assumed permanent, features were profoundly suppressed by acute post-natal treatment with a MEK inhibitor. These data suggest that activated NRAS and aberrant Wnt signaling conspire to drive CMN syndrome. Post-natal MEK inhibition is a potential candidate therapy for patients with this debilitating condition
SUSY Ward identities for multi-gluon helicity amplitudes with massive quarks
We use supersymmetric Ward identities to relate multi-gluon helicity
amplitudes involving a pair of massive quarks to amplitudes with massive
scalars. This allows to use the recent results for scalar amplitudes with an
arbitrary number of gluons obtained by on-shell recursion relations to obtain
scattering amplitudes involving top quarks.Comment: 22 pages, references adde
Far-infrared photo-conductivity of electrons in an array of nano-structured antidots
We present far-infrared (FIR) photo-conductivity measurements for a
two-dimensional electron gas in an array of nano-structured antidots. We
detect, resistively and spectrally resolved, both the magnetoplasmon and the
edge-magnetoplasmon modes. Temperature-dependent measurements demonstrates that
both modes contribute to the photo resistance by heating the electron gas via
resonant absorption of the FIR radiation. Influences of spin effect and phonon
bands on the collective excitations in the antidot lattice are observed.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
