    Bases for qudits from a nonstandard approach to SU(2)

    Bases of finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces (in dimension d) of relevance for quantum information and quantum computation are constructed from angular momentum theory and su(2) Lie algebraic methods. We report on a formula for deriving in one step the (1+p)p qupits (i.e., qudits with d = p a prime integer) of a complete set of 1+p mutually unbiased bases in C^p. Repeated application of the formula can be used for generating mutually unbiased bases in C^d with d = p^e (e > or = 2) a power of a prime integer.     In-vivo Studies of Ultrasound-activated Drug-loaded Porous Silicon Nanoparticles for Cancer Therapy Application

    It is investigated the therapeutic efficacy of combined action of ultrasound and porous silicon nanoparticles loaded with anticancer drug doxorubicin by using an experimental cancer model of lung Lewis carcinoma in vivo. Time dependences of growth of the primary tumor with introduced nanoparticles and without them, as well as the life span of mice after exposure to therapeutic ultrasound with intensity of 1W/cm2 and frequency of 1 MHz were studied. The obtained results show the effectiveness of inhibiting the growth of primary tumor site, as well as slowing the process of metastasis, in the case of combined action of ultrasound and drug-loaded porous silicon nanoparticles that indicates the prospect of latter as sonosensitizers and nanocontainers for the delivery and controlled release of drugs in sonodynamic therapy of malignant tumors.     Ageing test of the ATLAS RPCs at X5-GIF

    An ageing test of three ATLAS production RPC stations is in course at X5-GIF, the CERN irradiation facility. The chamber efficiencies are monitored using cosmic rays triggered by a scintillator hodoscope. Higher statistics measurements are made when the X5 muon beam is available. We report here the measurements of the efficiency versus operating voltage at different source intensities, up to a maximum counting rate of about 700Hz/cm^2. We describe the performance of the chambers during the test up to an overall ageing of 4 ATLAS equivalent years corresponding to an integrated charge of 0.12C/cm^2, including a safety factor of 5.Comment: 4 pages.     Study of the stochastic clustering on the refractory material surface under the effect of plasma load in the PLM device

    Tungsten plates were tested in stationary helium discharges in the PLM device. The duration of discharges in the PLM reached 200 minutes. A distinctive feature of this device is the stationary plasma confinement, which is advantageous for testing fusion materials, including materials of the divertor and first wall of a fusion reactor. During plasma irradiation in the PLM, the thermal load on the surface of the tested plates was more than 1 MW/m(2). The temperature of the tested plates amounted to 1000 degrees C and more. Stochastic nanostructures with dimensions of the structural elements of less than 50 nm, including fuzz-type structures, were observed on the processed surfaces of the samples

    An approach to verification and validation of MHD codes for fusion applications

    We propose a new activity on verification and validation (V&V) of MHD codes presently employed by the fusion community as a predictive capability tool for liquid metal cooling applications, such as liquid metal blankets. The important steps in the development of MHD codes starting from the 1970s are outlined first and then basic MHD codes, which are currently in use by designers of liquid breeder blankets, are reviewed. A benchmark database of five problems has been proposed to cover a wide range of MHD flows from laminar fully developed to turbulent flows, which are of interest for fusion applications: (A) 2D fully developed laminar steady MHD flow, (B) 3D laminar, steady developing MHD flow in a non-uniform magnetic field, (C) quasi-two-dimensional MHD turbulent flow, (D) 3D turbulent MHD flow, and (E) MHD flow with heat transfer (buoyant convection). Finally, we introduce important details of the proposed activities, such as basic V&V rules and schedule. The main goal of the present paper is to help in establishing an efficient V&V framework and to initiate benchmarking among interested parties. The comparison results computed by the codes against analytical solutions and trusted experimental and numerical data as well as code-to-code comparisons will be presented and analyzed in companion paper/paper

    The study covered 44 patients with localized and locally advanced prostate cancer (PC), who were followed up for at least 18 months after brachytherapy. A significant reduction in the level of prostatic specific antigen (PSA) in the blood of patients was observed 3 months after brachytherapy and tended to decrease further during a 12-month follow-up. It is the time after brachytherapy that may be considered as a criterion for a primary tumor response to the therapy. There were individual differences in the velocity and decrease rate of PSA levels during the therapy: in 30 (68.2%) patients, PSA values were in the range of 0.01—0.98 ng/ml (mean 0.39±0.31 ng/ml) while in 14 (31.8%) patients, those were 1.10—6.20 ng/ml (3.02±1.79 ng/ml). A certain correlation was found between the parameters of PSA (baseline PSA level, time course of changes, and kinetics of PSA levels) and the outcome of the disease. A more objective evaluation of the efficiency may be made after increasing the time of a follow-up and the number of patients after brachytherapy.
