Impeded Growth of Magnetic Flux Bubbles in the Intermediate State Pattern of Type I Superconductors
Normal state bubble patterns in Type I superconducting Indium and Lead slabs
are studied by the high resolution magneto-optical imaging technique. The size
of bubbles is found to be almost independent of the long-range interaction
between the normal state domains. Under bubble diameter and slab thickness
proper scaling, the results gather onto a single master curve. On this basis,
in the framework of the "current-loop" model [R.E. Goldstein, D.P. Jackson and
A.T. Dorsey, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 3818 (1996)], we calculate the equilibrium
diameter of an isolated bubble resulting from the competition between the
Biot-and-Savart interaction of the Meissner current encircling the bubble and
the superconductor-normal interface energy. A good quantitative agreement with
the master curve is found over two decades of the magnetic Bond number. The
isolation of each bubble in the superconducting matrix and the existence of a
positive interface energy are shown to preclude any continuous size variation
of the bubbles after their formation, contrary to the prediction of mean-field

Investigating slim disk solutions for HLX-1 in ESO 243-49
The hyper luminous X-ray source HLX-1 in the galaxy ESO 243-49, currently the
best intermediate mass black hole candidate, displays spectral transitions
similar to those observed in Galactic black hole binaries, but with a
luminosity 100-1000 times higher. We investigated the X-ray properties of this
unique source fitting multi-epoch data collected by Swift, XMM-Newton & Chandra
with a disk model computing spectra for a wide range of sub- and
super-Eddington accretion rates assuming a non-spinning black hole and a
face-on disk (i = 0 deg). Under these assumptions we find that the black hole
in HLX-1 is in the intermediate mass range (~2 x 10^4 M_odot) and the accretion
flow is in the sub-Eddington regime. The disk radiation efficiency is eta =
0.11 +/-0.03. We also show that the source does follow the L_X ~ T^4 relation
for our mass estimate. At the outburst peaks, the source radiates near the
Eddington limit. The accretion rate then stays constant around 4 x 10^(-4)
M_odot yr^(-1) for several days and then decreases exponentially. Such
"plateaus" in the accretion rate could be evidence that enhanced mass transfer
rate is the driving outburst mechanism in HLX-1. We also report on the new
outburst observed in August 2011 by the Swift-X-ray Telescope. The time of this

AAO Starbugs: software control and associated algorithms
The Australian Astronomical Observatory's TAIPAN instrument deploys 150
Starbug robots to position optical fibres to accuracies of 0.3 arcsec, on a 32
cm glass field plate on the focal plane of the 1.2 m UK-Schmidt telescope. This
paper describes the software system developed to control and monitor the
Starbugs, with particular emphasis on the automated path-finding algorithms,
and the metrology software which keeps track of the position and motion of
individual Starbugs as they independently move in a crowded field. The software
employs a tiered approach to find a collision-free path for every Starbug, from
its current position to its target location. This consists of three
path-finding stages of increasing complexity and computational cost. For each
Starbug a path is attempted using a simple method. If unsuccessful,
subsequently more complex (and expensive) methods are tried until a valid path

A Model for Effective Professional Development of Formal Science Educators
The Lunar Workshops for Educators (LWE) series was developed by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) education team in 2010 to provide professional development on lunar science and exploration concepts for grades 6-9 science teachers. Over 300 educators have been trained to date. The LWE model incorporates best practices from pedagogical research of science education, thoughtful integration of scientists and engineer subject matter experts for both content presentations and informal networking with educators, access to NASA-unique facilities, hands-on and data-rich activities aligned with education standards, exposure to the practice of science, tools for addressing common misconceptions, follow-up with participants, and extensive evaluation. Evaluation of the LWE model via pre- and post-assessments, daily workshop surveys, and follow-up surveys at 6-month and 1-year intervals indicate that the LWE are extremely effective in increasing educators' content knowledge, confidence in incorporating content into the classroom, understanding of the practice of science, and ability to address common student misconceptions. In order to address the efficacy of the LWE model for other science content areas, the Dynamic Response of Environments at Asteroids, the Moon, and moons of Mars (DREAM2) education team, funded by NASA's Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute, developed and ran a pilot workshop called Dream2Explore at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in June, 2015. Dream2Explore utilized the LWE model, but incorporated content related to the science and exploration of asteroids and the moons of Mars. Evaluation results indicate that the LWE model was effectively used for educator professional development on non-lunar content. We will present more detail on the LWE model, evaluation results from the Dream2Explore pilot workshop, and suggestions for the application of the model with other science content for robust educator professional development
Schizophrenia risk gene CAV1 is both pro-psychotic and required for atypical antipsychotic drug actions in vivo
Caveolin-1 (Cav-1) is a scaffolding protein important for regulating receptor signaling cascades by partitioning signaling molecules into membrane microdomains. Disruption of the CAV1 gene has recently been identified as a rare structural variant associated with schizophrenia. Although Cav-1 knockout (KO) mice displayed no baseline behavioral disruptions, Cav-1 KO mice, similar to schizophrenic individuals, exhibited increased sensitivity to the psychotomimetic N-methyl--aspartate receptor antagonist phencyclidine (PCP). Thus, PCP disruption of prepulse inhibition (PPI) and PCP-induced mouse locomotor activity were both enhanced by genetic deletion of Cav-1. Interestingly, genetic deletion of Cav-1 rendered the atypical antipsychotics clozapine and olanzapine and the 5-HT2A-selective antagonist M100907 ineffective at normalizing PCP-induced disruption of PPI. We also discovered that genetic deletion of Cav-1 attenuated 5-HT2A-induced c-Fos and egr-1 expression in mouse frontal cortex and also reduced 5-HT2A-mediated Ca2+ mobilization in primary cortical neuronal cultures. The behavioral effects of the 5-HT2A agonist (2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine) including head twitch responses and disruption of PPI were also attenuated by genetic deletion of Cav-1, indicating that Cav-1 is required for both inverse agonist (that is, atypical antipsychotic drug) and agonist actions at 5-HT2A receptors. This study demonstrates that disruption of the CAV1 gene—a rare structural variant associated with schizophrenia—is not only pro-psychotic but also attenuates atypical antipsychotic drug actions
Breakdown of Energy Equipartition in a 2D Binary Vibrated Granular Gas
We report experiments on the equipartition of kinetic energy between grains
made of two different materials in a mixture of grains vibrated in 2
dimensions. In general, the two types of grains do not attain the same granular
temperature, Tg = 1/2m v^2. However, the ratio of the two temperatures is
constant in the bulk of the system and independent of the vibration velocity.
The ratio depends strongly on the ratio of mass densities of the grains, but is
not sensitive to the inelasticity of grains. Also, this ratio is insensitive to
compositional variables of the mixture such as the number fraction of each
component and the total number density. We conclude that a single granular
temperature, as traditionally defined, does not characterize a multi-component

Strong field ionization to multiple electronic states in water
High harmonic spectra show that laser-induced strong field ionization of
water has a significant contribution from an inner-valence orbital. Our
experiment uses the ratio of H2O and D2O high harmonic yields to isolate the
characteristic nuclear motion of the molecular ionic states. The nuclear motion
initiated via ionization of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) is
small and is expected to lead to similar harmonic yields for the two isotopes.
In contrast, ionization of the second least bound orbital (HOMO-1) exhibits
itself via a strong bending motion which creates a significant isotope effect.
We elaborate on this interpretation by simulating strong field ionization and
high harmonic generation from the water isotopes using the time-dependent
Schr\"odinger equation. We expect that this isotope marking scheme for probing
excited ionic states in strong field processes can be generalized to other
molecules
Determination of superconducting anisotropy from magnetization data on random powders as applied to LuNiBC, YNiBC and MgB
The recently discovered intermetallic superconductor MgB2 appears to have a
highly anisotopic upper critical field with Hc2(max)/Hc2(min} = \gamma > 5. In
order to determine the temperature dependence of both Hc2(max) and Hc2(min) we
propose a method of extracting the superconducting anisotropy from the
magnetization M(H,T) of randomly oriented powder samples. The method is based
on two features in dM/dT the onset of diamagnetism at Tc(max), that is commonly
associated with Hc2, and a kink in dM/dT at a lower temperature Tc(min).
Results for LuNi2B2C and YNi2B2C powders are in agreement with anisotropic Hc2
obtained from magneto-transport measurements on single crystals. Using this
method on four different types of MgB2 powder samples we are able to determine
Hc2(max)(T) and Hc2(min)(T) with \gamma \approx 6
Self-management education for cystic fibrosis
Background: Self-management education may help patients with cystic fibrosis and their families to choose, monitor and adjust treatment requirements for their illness, and also to manage the effects of illness on their lives. Although self-management education interventions have been developed for cystic fibrosis, no previous systematic review of the evidence of effectiveness of these interventions has been conducted. Objectives:
To assess the effects of self-management education interventions on improving health outcomes for patients with cystic fibrosis and their caregivers. Search methods:
We searched the Cochrane Cystic Fibrosis and Genetic Disorders Group Trials Register (date of the last search: 22 August 2013). We also searched databases through EBSCO (CINAHL; Psychological and Behavioural Sciences Collection; PsychInfo; SocINDEX) and Elsevier (Embase) and handsearched relevant journals and conference proceedings (date of the last searches: 01 February 2014 ). Selection criteria: Randomised controlled trials, quasi-randomised controlled trials or controlled clinical trials comparing different types of self-management education for cystic fibrosis or comparing self-management education with standard care or no intervention. Data collection and analysis: Two authors assessed trial eligibility and risk of bias. Three authors extracted data. Main results: Four trials (involving a total of 269 participants) were included. The participants were children with cystic fibrosis and their parents or caregivers in three trials and adults with cystic fibrosis in one trial. The trials compared four different self-management education interventions versus standard treatment: (1) a training programme for managing cystic fibrosis in general; (2) education specific to aerosol and airway clearance treatments; (3) disease-specific nutrition education; and (4) general and disease-specific nutrition education. Training children to manage cystic fibrosis in general had no statistically significant effects on weight after six to eight weeks, mean difference -7.74 lb (i.e. 3.51 kg) (95% confidence interval -35.18 to 19.70). General and disease-specific nutrition education for adults had no statistically significant effects on: pulmonary function (forced expiratory volume at one second), mean difference -5.00 % (95% confidence interval -18.10 to 8.10) at six months and mean difference -5.50 % (95% confidence interval -18.46 to 7.46) at 12 months; or weight, mean difference - 0.70 kg (95% confidence interval -6.58 to 5.18) at six months and mean difference -0.70 kg (95% confidence interval -6.62 to 5.22) at 12 months; or dietary fat intake scores, mean difference 1.60 (85% confidence interval -2.90 to 6.10) at six months and mean difference 0.20 (95% confidence interval -4.08 to 4.48) at 12 months. There is some limited evidence to suggest that self-management education may improve knowledge in patients with cystic fibrosis but not in parents or caregivers. There is also some limited evidence to suggest that self-management education may result in positively changing a small number of behaviours in both patients and caregivers. Authors' conclusions: The available evidence from this review is of insufficient quantity and quality to draw any firm conclusions about the effects of self-management education for cystic fibrosis. Further trials are needed to investigate the effects of self-management education on a range of clinical and behavioural outcomes in children, adolescents and adults with cystic fibrosis and their caregivers
