Uncertainty Evaluation of Computational Model Used to Support the Integrated Powerhead Demonstration Project
NASA and the U.S. Air Force are working on a joint project to develop a new hydrogen-fueled, full-flow, staged combustion rocket engine. The initial testing and modeling work for the Integrated Powerhead Demonstrator (IPD) project is being performed by NASA Marshall and Stennis Space Centers. A key factor in the testing of this engine is the ability to predict and measure the transient fluid flow during engine start and shutdown phases of operation. A model built by NASA Marshall in the ROCket Engine Transient Simulation (ROCETS) program is used to predict transient engine fluid flows. The model is initially calibrated to data from previous tests on the Stennis E1 test stand. The model is then used to predict the next run. Data from this run can then be used to recalibrate the model providing a tool to guide the test program in incremental steps to reduce the risk to the prototype engine. In this paper, they define this type of model as a calibrated model. This paper proposes a method to estimate the uncertainty of a model calibrated to a set of experimental test data. The method is similar to that used in the calibration of experiment instrumentation. For the IPD example used in this paper, the model uncertainty is determined for both LOX and LH flow rates using previous data. The successful use of this model is then demonstrated to predict another similar test run within the uncertainty bounds. The paper summarizes the uncertainty methodology when a model is continually recalibrated with new test data. The methodology is general and can be applied to other calibrated models
Legislative strengthening meets party support in international assistance: a closer relationship?
Recent reports recommend that international efforts to help strengthen legislatures in emerging democracies should work more closely with support for building stronger political parties and competitive party systems. This article locates the recommendations within international assistance more generally and reviews the arguments. It explores problems that must be addressed if the recommendations are to be implemented effectively. The article argues that an alternative, issue-based approach to strengthening legislatures and closer links with civil society could gain more traction. However, that is directed more centrally at promoting good governance for the purpose of furthering development than at democratisation goals sought by party aid and legislative strengtheners in the democracy assistance industry
The X-ray Cluster Dipole
We estimate the dipole of the whole sky X-ray flux-limited sample of
Abell/ACO clusters (XBACs) and compare it to the optical Abell/ACO cluster
dipole. The X-ray cluster dipole is well aligned () with the
CMB dipole, while it follows closely the radial profile of its optical cluster
counterpart although its amplitude is per cent lower. In view of
the fact that the the XBACs sample is not affected by the volume incompleteness
and the projection effects that are known to exist at some level in the optical
parent Abell/ACO cluster catalogue, our present results confirm the previous
optical cluster dipole analysis that there are significant contributions to the
Local Group motion from large distances (Mpc). In order to
assess the expected contribution to the X-ray cluster dipole from a purely
X-ray selected sample we compare the dipoles of the XBACs and the Brightest
Cluster Sample (Ebeling et al. 1997a) in their overlap region. The resulting
dipoles are in mutual good aggreement with an indication that the XBACs sample
slightly underestimates the full X-ray dipole (by per cent) while the
Virgo cluster contributes about 10 - 15 per cent to the overall X-ray cluster
dipole. Using linear perturbation theory to relate the X-ray cluster dipole to
the Local group peculiar velocity we estimate the density parameter to be

Multichannel quantum-defect theory for ultracold atom-ion collisions
We develop an analytical model for ultracold atom-ion collisions using the
multichannel quantum-defect formalism. The model is based on the analytical
solutions of the r^-4 long-range potential and on the application of a frame
transformation between asymptotic and molecular bases. This approach allows the
description of the atom-ion interaction in the ultracold domain in terms of
three parameters only: the singlet and triplet scattering lengths, assumed to
be independent of the relative motion angular momentum, and the lead dispersion
coefficient of the asymptotic potential. We also introduce corrections to the
scattering lengths that improve the accuracy of our quantum-defect model for
higher order partial waves, a particularly important result for an accurate
description of shape and Feshbach resonances at finite temperature. The theory
is applied to the system composed of a 40Ca+ ion and a Na atom, and compared to
numerical coupled-channel calculations carried out using ab initio potentials.
For this particular system, we investigate the spectrum of bound states, the
rate of charge-transfer processes, and the collision rates in the presence of
magnetic Feshbach resonances at zero and finite temperature.Comment: 39 pages, 21 figure
Household networks and emergent territory: a GIS study of Chumash households, villages and rock-art in South-Central California
Elite households of the Californian Chumash have been studied in order to understand the development of Late Holocene hunter-gatherer alliance networks. Equally, models of what has been termed ‘tribelet territories’ have been used to describe land ownership within larger Californian concepts. Surprisingly little research has explicitly addressed issues of how such territories may have developed. In this article, we turn to DeLanda’s philosophy of social complexity to consider how Chumash households may have underpinned the development of tribelet territories and the political implications for their articulation with wider alliances. Importantly, utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS), we analyse potential mobility patterns in relation to households, villages and rock-art locales in a case from the Emigdiano Chumash. The results suggest that the painting of rock art was imbricated within processes of territorialization, and that the local placement of art reflects which villages were home to particularly high-status households
Effects of tyrosine kinase inhibitors on protein kinase-independent systems
AbstractTyrosine kinase inhibitors have been widely used to probe the role of tyrosine phosphorylation in cellular signalling. These inhibitors exhibit an apparent specificity for tyrosine kinases over the serine/threonine kinases but little is known about their effects on other enzymes or biological systems. We demonstrate that genistein, erbstatin and α-cyanoeinnamamides (tyrphostins) have inhibitory effects on fatty acid synthesis, lactate transport, mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation and aldehyde dehydrogenase. We propose, therefore, that results obtained using tyrosine kinase inhibitors should be interpreted with caution, particularly if used at concentrations sufficient to inhibit these non-protein kinase-dependent events
Far-infrared observations of IRC + 10216
Broad-band photometric observations of IRC + 10216 in five wavelength intervals from 50 to 1000 μ are reported. The observed radiation is interpreted as thermal emission from dust in the extended molecular cloud heated by the compact 2-20 μ source as the core of the cloud. The shape of the 50-1000 μ spectrum suggests that the emissivity of the dust particles varies approximately as λ^(-1) over this spectral interval. The mass of dust inferred from the far-infrared emission is comparable with the mass of heavy molecules in the cloud

Soap Froths and Crystal Structures
We propose a physical mechanism to explain the crystal symmetries found in
macromolecular and supramolecular micellar materials. We argue that the packing
entropy of the hard micellar cores is frustrated by the entropic interaction of
their brush-like coronas. The latter interaction is treated as a surface effect
between neighboring Voronoi cells. The observed crystal structures correspond
to the Kelvin and Weaire-Phelan minimal foams. We show that these structures
are stable for reasonable areal entropy densities.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX, 2 included eps figure
The Dipole Anisotropy of the First All-Sky X-ray Cluster Sample
We combine the recently published CIZA galaxy cluster catalogue with the
XBACs cluster sample to produce the first all-sky catalogue of X-ray clusters
in order to examine the origins of the Local Group's peculiar velocity without
the use of reconstruction methods to fill the traditional Zone of Avoidance.
The advantages of this approach are (i) X-ray emitting clusters tend to trace
the deepest potential wells and therefore have the greatest effect on the
dynamics of the Local Group and (ii) our all-sky sample provides data for
nearly a quarter of the sky that is largely incomplete in optical cluster
catalogues. We find that the direction of the Local Group's peculiar velocity
is well aligned with the CMB as early as the Great Attractor region 40 h^-1 Mpc
away, but that the amplitude of its dipole motion is largely set between 140
and 160 h^-1 Mpc. Unlike previous studies using galaxy samples, we find that
without Virgo included, roughly ~70% of our dipole signal comes from mass
concentrations at large distances (>60 h^-1 Mpc) and does not flatten,
indicating isotropy in the cluster distribution, until at least 160 h^-1 Mpc.
We also present a detailed discussion of our dipole profile, linking observed
features to the structures and superclusters that produce them. We find that
most of the dipole signal can be attributed to the Shapley supercluster
centered at about 150 h^-1 Mpc and a handful of very massive individual
clusters, some of which are newly discovered and lie well in the Zone of
