    Separation of Circulating Tokens

    Self-stabilizing distributed control is often modeled by token abstractions. A system with a single token may implement mutual exclusion; a system with multiple tokens may ensure that immediate neighbors do not simultaneously enjoy a privilege. For a cyber-physical system, tokens may represent physical objects whose movement is controlled. The problem studied in this paper is to ensure that a synchronous system with m circulating tokens has at least d distance between tokens. This problem is first considered in a ring where d is given whilst m and the ring size n are unknown. The protocol solving this problem can be uniform, with all processes running the same program, or it can be non-uniform, with some processes acting only as token relays. The protocol for this first problem is simple, and can be expressed with Petri net formalism. A second problem is to maximize d when m is given, and n is unknown.     Determination of the trap-assisted recombination strength in polymer light emitting diodes

    The recombination processes in poly(p-phenylene vinylene) based polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) are investigated. Photogenerated current measurements on PLED device structures reveal that next to the known Langevin recombination also trap-assisted recombination is an important recombination channel in PLEDs, which has not been considered until now. The dependence of the open-circuit voltage on light intensity enables us to determine the strength of this process. Numerical modeling of the current-voltage characteristics incorporating both Langevin and trap-assisted recombination yields a correct and consistent description of the PLED, without the traditional correction of the Langevin prefactor. At low bias voltage the trap-assisted recombination rate is found to be dominant over the free carrier recombination rate.

    Role of social environment and social clustering in spread of opinions in co-evolving networks

    Taking a pragmatic approach to the processes involved in the phenomena of collective opinion formation, we investigate two specific modifications to the co-evolving network voter model of opinion formation, studied by Holme and Newman [1]. First, we replace the rewiring probability parameter by a distribution of probability of accepting or rejecting opinions between individuals, accounting for the asymmetric influences in relationships among individuals in a social group. Second, we modify the rewiring step by a path-length-based preference for rewiring that reinforces local clustering. We have investigated the influences of these modifications on the outcomes of the simulations of this model. We found that varying the shape of the distribution of probability of accepting or rejecting opinions can lead to the emergence of two qualitatively distinct final states, one having several isolated connected components each in internal consensus leading to the existence of diverse set of opinions and the other having one single dominant connected component with each node within it having the same opinion. Furthermore, and more importantly, we found that the initial clustering in network can also induce similar transitions. Our investigation also brings forward that these transitions are governed by a weak and complex dependence on system size.     Voor de beoordeling van de toestand van macrofauna in de Nederlandse kust- en overgangswateren zijn maatlatten ontwikkeld, gebaseerd op de Benthic Ecosystem Quality Index (BEQI). Deze methode gaat uit van een ecosysteembenadering en maakt niet alleen gebruik van informatie over de macrofauna zelf maar ook over zijn leefgebieden en voedselbronnen. Zo is het mogelijk directe en indirecte effecten van door de mens veroorzaakte druk te signaleren. De methode overstijgt de beoordeling van individuele meetpunten en maakt het mogelijk voor een waterlichaam als geheel op een betrouwbare manier vast te stellen of de toestand van de macrofauna afwijkt van een gekozen referenti

    FISH1D 2.2 User’s Manual

    FISH1D is a computer program that solves the one-dimensional Poisson equation for electrostatic Fields in Semiconductor Heterostructures. The program will print or plot the electrostatic potential, electric field, electron and hole densities, dopant density, ionized dopant density, and other quantities of interest versus position at an applied bias voltage (assuming zero current). A capacitance or sheet carrier concentration versus voltage analysis may also be performed. While FISH1D was originally written for the ternary Alx Ga1 _xAs, it has been modified to simulate CdxHg1^xTe, ZnSe, GexSi1^ , and Si as well, and the program can be readily modified to analyze other semiconductors through the addition of new material subroutines or using the most recent option, the MATDEF card. This card enables the user to enter new material definitions by layers in the input deck without having to recompile, an advantage of FISHlD 2.1 over FISH1D 2.0. Simulations of bipolar transistors under bias are now possible in FISH1D 2.2, which has an upgraded BIAS card. The primary purpose of this document is explain how to use FISH1D; for a more thorough discussion of the numerical implementation of FISH1D, the user is directed to the references. A theoretical basis for FISH1D is provided in Appendix I of this manual

    Excited states in bilayer graphene quantum dots

    We report on ground- and excited state transport through an electrostatically defined few-hole quantum dot in bilayer graphene in both parallel and perpendicular applied magnetic fields. A remarkably clear level scheme for the two-particle spectra is found by analyzing finite bias spectroscopy data within a two-particle model including spin and valley degrees of freedom. We identify the two-hole ground-state to be a spin-triplet and valley-singlet state. This spin alignment can be seen as Hund's rule for a valley-degenerate system, which is fundamentally different to quantum dots in carbon nano tubes and GaAs-based quantum dots. The spin-singlet excited states are found to be valley-triplet states by tilting the magnetic field with respect to the sample plane. We quantify the exchange energy to be 0.35meV and measure a valley and spin g-factor of 36 and 2, respectively

    Bardeen-Petterson effect and the disk structure of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068

    VLBA high spatial resolution observations of the disk structure of the active galactic nucleus NGC 1068 has recently revealed that the kinematics and geometry of this AGN is well characterized by an outer disk of H2O maser emission having a compact milliarcsecond (parsec) scale structure, which is encircling a thin rotating inner disk surrounding a ~10^7 M_\sun compact mass, likely a black hole. A curious feature in this source is the occurrence of a misalignment between the inner and outer parts of the disk, with the galaxy's radio jet being orthogonal to the inner disk. We interpret this peculiar configuration as due to the Bardeen-Petterson effect, a general relativistic effect that warps an initially inclined (to the black hole equator) viscous disk, and drives the angular momentum vector of its inner part into alignment with the rotating black hole spin. We estimate the time-scale for both angular momenta to get aligned as a function the spin parameter of the Kerr black hole. We also reproduce the shape of the parsec and kiloparsec scale jets, assuming a model in which the jet is precessing with a period and aperture angle that decrease exponentially with time, as expected from the Bardeen-Petterson effect.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    Quantum Criticality of an Ising-like Spin-1/2 Antiferromagnetic Chain in Transverse Magnetic Field

    We report on magnetization, sound velocity, and magnetocaloric-effect measurements of the Ising-like spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain system BaCo2_2V2_2O8_8 as a function of temperature down to 1.3 K and applied transverse magnetic field up to 60 T. While across the N\'{e}el temperature of TN5T_N\sim5 K anomalies in magnetization and sound velocity confirm the antiferromagnetic ordering transition, at the lowest temperature the field-dependent measurements reveal a sharp softening of sound velocity v(B)v(B) and a clear minimum of temperature T(B)T(B) at Bc,3D=21.4B^{c,3D}_\perp=21.4 T, indicating the suppression of the antiferromagnetic order. At higher fields, the T(B)T(B) curve shows a broad minimum at Bc=40B^c_\perp = 40 T, accompanied by a broad minimum in the sound velocity and a saturation-like magnetization. These features signal a quantum phase transition which is further characterized by the divergent behavior of the Gr\"{u}neisen parameter ΓB(BBc)1\Gamma_B \propto (B-B^{c}_\perp)^{-1}. By contrast, around the critical field, the Gr\"{u}neisen parameter converges as temperature decreases, pointing to a quantum critical point of the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model.Comment: Phys.
