    Competition, restructuring and firm performance: evidence of an inverted-U relationship from a cross-country survey of firms in transition economies

    This paper examines the importance of competition in the growth anddevelopment of firms. We draw on a survey of 3,300 firms in 25transition countries to shed light on the factors that influencerestructuring by firms and their subsequent performance. These datahave three main advantages over those used in previous work. First,they measure directly the degree of competition perceived by each firmin its principal market rather than attempting to infer this from marketdata as measured by statistical agencies. Second, the fact that transitioncountries have market structures inherited from the past avoids some ofthe endogeneity problems associated with measures of competition inmarket economies. Third, the breadth of cross-country variationprovides a method of dealing with the fact that firm-level measures ofthe external environment will not be independent of the firm?s ownperformance. We find evidence of a robust inverted-U effect ofcompetition on performance that is both statistically and economicallysignificant.     Stochastic Gene Expression in a Lentiviral Positive Feedback Loop: HIV-1 Tat Fluctuations Drive Phenotypic Diversity

    Stochastic gene expression has been implicated in a variety of cellular processes, including cell differentiation and disease. In this issue of Cell, Weinberger et al. (2005) take an integrated computational-experimental approach to study the Tat transactivation feedback loop in HIV-1 and show that fluctuations in a key regulator, Tat, can result in a phenotypic bifurcation. This phenomenon is observed in an isogenic population where individual cells display two distinct expression states corresponding to latent and productive infection by HIV-1.     Benefit-cost methodology study with example application of the use of wind generators

    An example application for cost-benefit methodology is presented for the use of wind generators. The approach adopted for the example application consisted of the following activities: (1) surveying of the available wind data and wind power system information, (2) developing models which quantitatively described wind distributions, wind power systems, and cost-benefit differences between conventional systems and wind power systems, and (3) applying the cost-benefit methodology to compare a conventional electrical energy generation system with systems which included wind power generators. Wind speed distribution data were obtained from sites throughout the contiguous United States and were used to compute plant factor contours shown on an annual and seasonal basis. Plant factor values (ratio of average output power to rated power) are found to be as high as 0.6 (on an annual average basis) in portions of the central U. S. and in sections of the New England coastal area. Two types of wind power systems were selected for the application of the cost-benefit methodology. A cost-benefit model was designed and implemented on a computer to establish a practical tool for studying the relative costs and benefits of wind power systems under a variety of conditions and to efficiently and effectively perform associated sensitivity analyses

    Cyclotron production and cyclometallation chemistry of 192Ir

    Introduction To explore new questions and techniques in nuclear medicine, new isotopes with novel chemical and nuclear properties must be developed. We are interested in the small cyclotron production of new radiometals for the development of new radiopharmaceuticals (RX). In an example of RX multifunctionality, Luminescence Cell Imaging (LCI) has been combined with radio-isotopes to allow compounds that can be imaged with both optical microscopy and nuclear techniques [1]. Within this field, iridium cy-clometalates have good potential with excellent photophysical properties [2]. As well, low specific activity iridium-192 has found use in brachy-therapy as a high-intensity beta emitter [3]. Despite this, iridium radioisotopes have yet to be applied to cyclometalation chemistry, or a radiochemical isolation method developed for carrier free production on a medical cyclotron. Our goal is to demonstrate the feasibility of the production and isolation of radio-iridium, and its application to cyclometalate chemistry as a potentially interesting tool for nuclear medicine research. Materials and Methods Following literature precedent [4], natural osmium was electroplated onto a silver disc from basic media containing osmium tetroxide and sulphamic acid. The thin deposits obtained (15–20 mg cm−2) were weighed and characterized with scanning electron microscopy. Targets were irradiated using the TRIUMF TR13 cyclotron, delivering 12.5 MeV protons to the target disc. Initial bombardments were per-formed at 5 ÎŒA; gamma spectra of the targets were collected 24 hours after end of bombardment. The irradiated material was oxidized, dissolved from the target backing, and separated via anion exchange. In parallel to the isotope production work, non-radioactive iridium was used to define a chemical procedure suitable for the synthesis of model iridium cyclometalate compounds given low concentrations of radioiridium. These experiments will be performed with radioactive iridium in the next step of the research project. Results and Conclusion Proton bombardment of natural osmium yielded a range of iridium isotopes, with characteristic spectral lines corresponding to 186-190Ir, and 192Ir; no other characteristic radiation was observed. The EOB activity of each isotope was then used in thin target calculations to approximate their (p,n) cross section. Preliminary cross section measurements of the 192Os(p,n)192Ir reaction (53 ± 13 mb @ 12.5 MeV) confirm published data (52.3 ± 5.7 mb @ 12.2 MeV) [6], and provide as-yet unpublished data on the lower mass number isotopes. The progress of radioactive iridium through the radiochemical separation was tracked with a dose calibrator; the osmium complex formed was brightly coloured and could be seen retained on the column. The overall efficiency of the process is estimated at 80 %. Radioactive cyclometallation chemistry is currently under-way. The production and isolation of a range of iridium isotopes in a chemically useful form was demonstrated, and is ready to be applied to a cyclometalate model compound.     Mass modification of D-meson in hot hadronic matter

    We evaluate the in-medium DD and Dˉ\bar D-meson masses in hot hadronic matter induced by interactions with the light hadron sector described in a chiral SU(3) model. The effective Lagrangian approach is generalized to SU(4) to include charmed mesons. We find that the D-mass drops substantially at finite temperatures and densities, which open the channels of the decay of the charmonium states (Κâ€Č\Psi^\prime, χc\chi_c, J/ΚJ/\Psi) to DDˉD \bar D pairs in the thermal medium. The effects of vacuum polarisations from the baryon sector on the medium modification of the DD-meson mass relative to those obtained in the mean field approximation are investigated. The results of the present work are compared to calculations based on the QCD sum-rule approach, the quark-meson coupling model, chiral perturbation theory, as well as to studies of quarkonium dissociation using heavy quark potential from lattice QCD.Comment: 18 pages including 7 figures, minor revision of the text, figure styles modified, to appear in Phys.     QCD Corrections to Production of Higgs Pseudoscalars

    Models of electroweak symmetry breaking with more than a single doublet of Higgs scalars contain a neutral pseudoscalar boson. The production of such a pseudoscalar in hadron collisions proceeds primarily via gluon fusion through a top-quark loop (except for those models in which the pseudoscalar coupling to bottom quarks is strongly enhanced).     Optimal Torque and Stiffness Control in Compliantly Actuated Robots

    Abstract — Anthropomorphic robots that aim to approach human performance agility and efficiency are typically highly redundant not only in their kinematics but also in actuation. Variable-impedance actuators, used to drive many of these devices, are capable of modulating torque and passive impedance (stiffness and/or damping) simultaneously and independently. Here, we propose a framework for simultaneous optimisation of torque and impedance (stiffness) profiles in order to optimise task performance, tuned to the complex hardware and incorporating real-world constraints. Simulation and hardware experiments validate the viability of this approach to complex, state dependent constraints and demonstrate task performance benefits of optimal temporal impedance modulation.     Learning from the children : exploring preschool children's encounters with ICT at home

    This paper is an account of our attempts to understand preschool children's experiences with information and communication technologies (ICT) at home. Using case study data, we focus on what we can learn from talking directly to the children that might otherwise have been overlooked and on describing and evaluating the methods we adopted to ensure that we maximised the children's contributions to the research. By paying attention to the children's perspectives we have learned that they are discriminating users of ICT who evaluate their own performances, know what gives them pleasure and who differentiate between operational competence and the substantive activities made possible by ICT
