A Novel Method of Determining Portal Systemic Shunting using Biodegradable 99TCm Labelled Albumin Microspheres
Portal systemic shunting (PSS) and portal pressure were measured in control rats and in animals
with portal hypertension induced by partial portal vein ligation (PPVL). The portal pressure in
rats with partial portal vein ligation (13.4 ± 0.5 mm.Hg.) was significantly higher (p < 0.005) than
in the control group (9.6 ± 0.6 mm.Hg.). Portal systemic shunting measured by consecutive
injections of radiolabelled methylene diphosphonate (MDP), a non-diffusable marker and
albumin microspheres directly into the splenic pulp was significantly increased (P < 0.005) in the
portal hypertensive animals (30.8 ± 2.5%) compared to sham operated rats (2.6 ± 1.5%). Similarly,
in portal hypertensive rats portal systemic shunting measured by intrasplenic injections of
radiolabelled cobalt microspheres (37.1 ± 3.9%) was significantly greater (p < 0.005) than in
control animals. There was a good correlation and agreement (r = 00.97) between the two
methods of measuring portal systemic shunting. However because the 99Tcm-albumin microspheres
are biodegradable the method allows portal systemic shunting to be measured in man.
Furthermore since the computer adjusts the baseline to zero after each determination of portal
systemic shunting the methodology allows repeated measurements to be made
A Radial Velocity Study of CTCV J1300-3052
We present time-resolved spectroscopy of the eclipsing, short period
cataclysmic variable CTCV J1300-3052. Using absorption features from the
secondary star, we determine the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the
secondary star to be K2 = 378 \pm 6 km/s, and its projected rotational velocity
to be v sin i = 125 \pm 7 km/s. Using these parameters and Monte Carlo
techniques, we obtain masses of M1 = 0.79 \pm 0.05 MSun for the white dwarf
primary and M2 = 0.198 \pm 0.029 MSun for the M-type secondary star. These
parameters are found to be in excellent agreement with previous mass
determinations found via photometric fitting techniques, supporting the

This paper proposes a mixed integer programming formulation for modeling the capacitated multi-level lot sizing problem with both backlogging and setup carryover. Based on the model formulation, a progressive time-oriented decomposition heuristic framework is then proposed, where improvement and construction heuristics are effectively combined, therefore efficiently avoiding the weaknesses associated with the one-time decisions made by other classical time-oriented decomposition algorithms. Computational results show that the proposed optimization framework provides competitive solutions within a reasonable time

MMP-1 activation contributes to airway smooth muscle growth and asthma severity
Introduction: Matrix metalloproteinase-1 and mast cells are present in the airways of people with asthma. We hypothesised that matrix metalloproteinase-1 could be activated by mast cells and increase asthma severity. Methods: Patients with stable asthma and healthy controls underwent spirometry, methacholine challenge, bronchoscopy and their airway smooth muscle cells were grown in culture. A second asthma group and controls had symptom scores, spirometry and bronchoalveolar lavage before and after rhinovirus-induced asthma exacerbations. Extra-cellular matrix was prepared from decellularised airway smooth muscle cultures. Matrix metalloproteinase-1 protein and activity were assessed. Results: Airway smooth muscle cells generated pro-matrix metalloproteinase-1 which was proteolytically activated by mast cell tryptase. Airway smooth muscle treated with activated mast cell supernatants produced extra-cellular matrix which enhanced subsequent airway smooth muscle growth by 1.5 fold (p<0.05) which was dependent on matrix metalloproteinase-1 activation. In asthma, airway pro-matrix metalloproteinase-1 was 5.4 fold higher than control subjects (p=0.002). Mast cell numbers were associated with airway smooth muscle proliferation and matrix metalloproteinase-1 protein associated with bronchial hyper-responsiveness. During exacerbations, matrix metalloproteinase-1 activity increased and was associated with fall in FEV1 and worsening asthma symptoms. Conclusions: Matrix metalloproteinase-1 is activated by mast cell tryptase resulting in a pro-proliferative extra-cellular matrix. In asthma, mast cells are associated with airway smooth muscle growth, matrix metalloproteinase-1 levels are associated with bronchial hyper-responsiveness and matrix metalloproteinase-1 activation with exacerbation severity. Our findings suggest that airway smooth muscle/mast cell interactions contribute to asthma severity by transiently increasing matrix metalloproteinase activation, airway smooth muscle growth and airway responsiveness
Optimal use of visual information in adolescents and young adults with developmental coordination disorder
Recent reports offer contrasting views on whether or not the use of online visual control is impaired in individuals with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). This study explored the optimal temporal basis for processing and using visual information in adolescents and young adults with DCD. Participants were 22 adolescents and young adults (12 males and 10 females; M = 19 years, SD = 3). Half had been diagnosed with DCD as children and still performed poorly on the movement assessment battery for children (DCD group; n = 11), and half reported typical development (TD group; n = 11) and were age- and gender-matched with the DCD group. We used performance on a steering task as a measure of information processing and examined the use of advance visual information. The conditions varied the duration of advance visual information: 125, 250, 500, 750, and 1,000 ms. With increased duration of advance visual information, the TD group showed a pattern of linear improvement. For the DCD group, however, the pattern was best described by a U-curve where optimal performance occurred with about 750 ms of advance information. The results suggest that the DCD group has an underlying preference for immediate online processing of visual information. The exact timing for optimal online control may depend crucially on the task, but too much advance information is detrimental to performance
