    A comparative study of laws governing domestic violence in Ethiopia and India

    This study aimed to compare the laws governing domestic violence in Ethiopia and India and to then determine their practical efficacy. Data was collected using in-depth interviews with victims of domestic violence, and an examination of judicial interpretation and findings in domestic violence cases, in both the city of Jimma, South-Western Ethiopia, and the town of Ranni, a district of Kerala in India. A comprehensive literature study was conducted concerning domestic violence against women in India and Ethiopia, international laws, and agreements on violence against women, and international best practices relating to domestic violence legislation and prevention. Ethiopian law governing domestic violence was compared with a similar law in India. The nature, cause, extent, and prevalence of domestic violence in both jurisdictions were identified. The findings of this study indicate various shortcomings in the law governing domestic violence in these two countries, which cause a contravention of international agreements and best practices. It was further found that legislation alone is inadequate to address domestic violence since other social and cultural factors are involved in the phenomenon. The need for enhanced legislation in India and Ethiopia to effectively address domestic violence was identified. Intervention strategies to inform policies and legislative changes in terms of domestic violence in India and Ethiopia are therefore proposed.     Changes in Polyphenol Oxidase Activity During Rooting of Hardwood Cuttings in Three Grape Rootstocks Under Indian Conditions

    Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity was investigated during rooting in cuttings from the rootstocks Dog ridge, 110 Rand St. George, belonging to different Vitis species. Enzyme activity and rooting ability were analysed. Significantdifferences were found in PPO activity among different rootstocks, with Dog ridge and 110 R having the highest PPOactivity during the initial period of planting, followed by a decrease in enzyme activity. In St. George, the enzymeactivity was least during the initial periods, but it increased throughout the experiment. The initiation of rootingprimordia was observed until 60 to 90 days after planting in Dog ridge and 110 R rootstocks, while it was observed120 days after planting in St. George, suggesting differences in the rooting behaviour of the rootstocks. The statusof various biochemical components of the mother vines, such as total phenols, reducing sugars, carbohydrates,nitrogen, C:N ratio, etc. were analysed to investigate the influence of these constituents on the rooting ability of therootstocks apart from PPO activity

    Fine mapping of rice drought QTL and study on combined effect of QTL for their physiological parameters under moisture stress condition

    The present investigation was undertaken to study the effect of different yield QTL (DTY2.2, DTY3.1 and DTY8.1) under drought and their physiological response to drought stress. Backcross Inbred Lines (BILs) of IR64 (CB-193 and CB-229) along with IR64, APO and the traditional rice variety Norungan were raised in green house condition under water stress and control to evaluate the effect of the QTL on grain yield. The BIL CB-193 recorded higher photosynthetic rate (22.051), transpiration rate (7.152) and Ci/Ca ratio (0.597) whereas the BIL CB-229 recorded high relative water content (80.76%). It was found that the combination of three QTL (CB-229) performed better than the susceptible parent and the line with two QTL (CB-193 Fine-mapping of two QTLs viz., qDTY2.2 and qDTY8.1, for grain yield (GY) were conducted using backcross derived lines. Composite interval mapping analyses resolved the originally identified qDTY2.2 region of 6.7 cM into a segment of 2.1 cM and two sub QTLs at region between RM23132 and RM1578 (75.75 cM- 77.66 cM), RM515 and RM1578 (75.11 cM-77.66 cM) were identified in qDTY8.1 region. However this study provides a unique opportunity to breeders to introgress such regions together as a unit into high-yielding drought-susceptible varieties through MAS

    Microbial decomposition of the floating weed Salvinia molesta Aublet in Cochin backwaters

    From the live and decomposing S. molesta 13 strains of bacteria were isolated and the growth promoting effect of the weed extract in various concentrations in 5 selected strains of bacteria and a mixed culture was studied. Turbidity measurements gave maximum percentaae transmission in 5 % extract. Dry weight loss of dried weed in the laboratory was 20 and 25 % after to and 25 days of incubation respectively. Yield efficiency of 3 bacterial strains calculated for 48 hr was 20%. The results suggest the potential value of this primary source of organic material in the food web of Cocbin backwater

    Can only intelligent children do mind reading: The relationship between intelligence and theory of mind in 8 to 11 years old

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The mind reading ability of children has evoked wide interest, but its relationship with general cognitive abilities remains obscure.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We studied the relationship between the mind reading ability and general intelligence. Children (N = 105) between 8 to 11 years from educational institutions were assessed for the mind reading ability using <it>Picture Sequencing Task </it>and <it>Unexpected Contents Theory of Mind task</it>. We used <it>Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire </it>to rule out psychiatric morbidity. An independent investigator quantified intelligence and adaptive behavior with <it>Binet- Kamat Test of intelligence </it>and <it>Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale </it>respectively. We employed bivariate and multivariate statistical tests.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We demonstrated that mind reading ability was not significantly related to general intelligence or its domains except for the social intelligence after controlling the confounders methodologically and statistically.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These findings argue that mind reading skill exists as an independent cognitive domain and has clinical, research as well as educational implications.</p

    Status of exploitation of tuna, mackerel and seerfish in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

    Annual fish landing of Andaman and Nicobar Islands during 1989-'99 and the contribution of scombroids viz., tuna, mackerel and seerfishes are described. During the period the exploitation of tuna ranged between 321 to 3,8231, the average contribution being about 5% of the total fish landings. Among the tuna species, yellowfin tuna Thunnus albacares is the major contributor followed by skipjack tuna Katsuwonus pelamis and bigeye tuna Thunns obesus all of which are best caught during March to August. The mackerfel fishery is supported by Rastrelliger brachysoma followed by R.kanagurta. The total mackerel landings ranged between 806 to 1,9551, the major fishing season being from March to June and September to October and is best caught in the gill nets and boat seines. Seerfishes are dominantly represented by two genera and three species vjz. Scomberomorus commerson, S. guttatus and Acanthocybium solandri. Their major fishing season is from March to August and November to Febmary, being generally caught by gill nets, troll lines and hand lines. During the period of 1989 -'99, the total exploitation of seerfishes ranged between 293 to 1,172 t and showed a gradual increase in their production

    Fuelwood is the major source of energy for tea drying in Sri Lanka. High moisture content and presence of latex in the wood are the two main problems in using Cluisia as a fuelwood in tea drying. This study was carried out at Moussakellie tea factory and Hapugastenne estate in Maskeliya to evaluate Clusia rosea as a fuelwood species in tea drying. Two fuelwood combinations were evaluated by estimating Specific Fuelwood Consumption (SFC). Moisture content of Clusia wood were measured in relation to stem girth and methods of processing. Wood production of Clusia coppice managed under a six year rotation was measured. The study clearly shows that Clusia rosea is a suitable fuelwood species for tea drying. Clusia showed a higher energy value as inclusion of it in the fuelwood mixtures caused a significant reduction in the Specific Fuelwood Consumption (SFC). Clusia wood can be mixed up to 50% with wild wood for tea drying without causing deposition of latex on heat tubes by maintaining flue gas temperature above 1000C. Results of the study also showed that splitting and peeling are effective methods in removing moisture from Clusia wood. The study also identified the relationship between moisture content and moisture loss with stem girth. The biomass production of Clusia is found to be comparable with common fuelwood species used in tea drying.     Multifactorial Aspects Influencing Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (Nafld)

    Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a growing public health concern, with a prevalence of up to 25% worldwide. While once considered a benign condition, NAFLD is now recognized as a major cause of chronic liver disease, liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma. The pathogenesis of NAFLD is multifactorial and involves a complex interplay between genetic, environmental, and metabolic factors. In this review, we provide an overview of the multifactorial aspects of NAFLD, including genetic predisposition, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, gut microbiota, dietary factors, and physical inactivity. We also discuss the role of inflammation, oxidative stress, and hepatic steatosis in the progression of NAFLD to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Finally, we review the current and emerging therapies for NAFLD and NASH, including lifestyle modifications, pharmacological interventions, and surgical approaches. The multifactorial nature of NAFLD requires a comprehensive approach to diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, with a focus on addressing the underlying metabolic and environmental factors that contribute to its development and progression
