    Phenomenological Experience of Mexican Curanderismo

    This qualitative research design focused on the various treatment dimensions of Curanderismo and explored it as a possible compliment with traditional Western psychotherapy. The principal investigator gathered information about the treatment provided in Curanderismo and gained a deeper understanding of participant\u27s lived experiences during such healings. This study also aimed to understand how individuals made the choice to seek treatment with a curandero/a, as well as if a deeper understanding of such treatment could help the mental health field be better informed care providers to the Latino/a community. Phenomenological research methodology was used in efforts to grasp how the participants, as individuals, experienced Mexican Curanderismo. Through a semi-structured life world interview, data was collected from eight participants: four Curanderos and four non-Curanderos, both sets represented by two males and two females. The central research questions were as followed: 1) How do curandero/as and clients of curandero/as describe Curanderismo? 2) What is the lived experience of curandero/as when they are providing treatment to a client? 3) What is the lived experience of a Latino/a being treated by an American trained clinical psychologist? 4) What are the traditional assessment and treatment protocols of Curanderismo? 5) What are the positive and negative perceived societal views of Curanderismo? 6) How can Curanderismo be integrated in Western mental health to better serve Latino/as? Twelve themes were the foremost emergent themes throughout this research study as it encompassed much of the combined lived experiences of the eight research participants. The themes that emerged were as follows: 1) La Terminologia [The Terminology]; 2) El Don [The Gift]; 3) Auto-Cuidado [Self-Care]; 4) Los Guias [The Guides]; 5) Puro Cerebro [Pure Cerebral]; 6) La Farmacologia [The Pharmacology]; 7) Pura Magia [Pure Magic]; 8) La Conexion [The Connection]; 9) Es Brujeria [It’s Witchcraft]; 10) Es Comercio [It’s Commercialization]; 11) Nueva Generacion [New Generation]; and, 12) Dar Oportunidad [Give Opportunity]. This research study, and future research studies, can serve as a tool to break that pattern, as there is a great need for validation, integration, and continuation of Mexican Curanderismo in westernized mental health.     Results of wind tunnel tests of an ASRM configured 0.03 scale Space Shuttle integrated vehicle model (47-OTS) in the AEDC 16-foot Transonic wind tunnel (IA613A), volume 1

    An experimental Aerodynamic and Aero-Acoustic loads data base was obtained at transonic Mach numbers for the Space Shuttle Launch Vehicle configured with the ASRM Solid Rocket Boosters as an increment to the current flight configuration (RSRB). These data were obtained during transonic wind tunnel tests (IA 613A) conducted in the Arnold Engineering Development Center 16-Foot transonic propulsion wind tunnel from March 27, 1991 through April 12, 1991. This test is the first of a series of two tests covering the Mach range from 0.6 to 3.5. Steady state surface static and fluctuating pressure distributions over the Orbiter, External Tank and Solid Rocket Boosters of the Shuttle Integrated Vehicle were measured. Total Orbiter forces, Wing forces and Elevon hinge moments were directly measured as well from force balances. Two configurations of Solid Rocket Boosters were tested, the Redesigned Solid Rocket Booster (RSRB) and the Advanced Solid Rocket Motor (ASRM). The effects of the position (i.e. top, bottom, top and bottom) of the Integrated Electronics Assembly (IEA) box, mounted on the SRB attach ring, were obtained on the ASRM configured model. These data were obtained with and without Solid Plume Simulators which, when used, matched as close as possible the flight derived pressures on the Orbiter and External Tank base. Data were obtained at Mach numbers ranging from 0.6 to 1.55 at a Unit Reynolds Number of 2.5 million per foot through model angles of attack from -8 to +4 degrees at sideslip angles of 0, +4 and -4 degrees

    Effect of rolling on dissipation in fault gouges

    Sliding and rolling are two outstanding deformation modes in granular media. The first one induces frictional dissipation whereas the latter one involves deformation with negligible resistance. Using numerical simulations on two-dimensional shear cells, we investigate the effect of the grain rotation on the energy dissipation and the strength of granular materials under quasistatic shear deformation. Rolling and sliding are quantified in terms of the so-called Cosserat rotations. The observed spontaneous formation of vorticity cells and clusters of rotating bearings may provide an explanation for the long standing heat flow paradox of earthquake dynamics

    Naive mean field approximation for image restoration

    We attempt image restoration in the framework of the Baysian inference. Recently, it has been shown that under a certain criterion the MAP (Maximum A Posterior) estimate, which corresponds to the minimization of energy, can be outperformed by the MPM (Maximizer of the Posterior Marginals) estimate, which is equivalent to a finite-temperature decoding method. Since a lot of computational time is needed for the MPM estimate to calculate the thermal averages, the mean field method, which is a deterministic algorithm, is often utilized to avoid this difficulty. We present a statistical-mechanical analysis of naive mean field approximation in the framework of image restoration. We compare our theoretical results with those of computer simulation, and investigate the potential of naive mean field approximation.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figure

    Las relaciones entre profesionales en los códigos de deontología de diversas profesiones de la salud

    Una buena atención y cuidado de las personas en el ámbito sanitario requiere de la coordinación entre los profesionales responsables de dicha atención, tanto a nivel interdisciplinar como entre niveles asistenciales. Las consideraciones éticas que subyacen, siendo fundamentales, han sido poco estudiadas de manera específica, a pesar de que todos los Códigos de Deontología de las profesiones relacionadas con la salud recogen recomendaciones y sugerencias relativas a las relaciones entre profesionales. En este artículo se desarrolla una revisión reflexiva sobre estas recomendaciones, a partir de los Códigos de las profesiones relacionadas con nuestro ámbito asistencial, y su importancia en el mismo. A good care of people in the health field requires coordination among the professionals responsible for such care, both interdisciplinary and between levels of care. The ethical considerations that underlie, being fundamental, have been little studied in a specific way, although all the Codes of Deontology of the professions related to the health collect recommendations and suggestions regarding the relations between professionals. This article makes a reflective review on these recommendations and their importance in our care environment

    Image restoration using the chiral Potts spin-glass

    We report on the image reconstruction (IR) problem by making use of the random chiral q-state Potts model, whose Hamiltonian possesses the same gauge invariance as the usual Ising spin glass model. We show that the pixel representation by means of the Potts variables is suitable for the gray-scale level image which can not be represented by the Ising model. We find that the IR quality is highly improved by the presence of a glassy term, besides the usual ferromagnetic term under random external fields, as very recently pointed out by Nishimori and Wong. We give the exact solution of the infinite range model with q=3, the three gray-scale level case. In order to check our analytical result and the efficiency of our model, 2D Monte Carlo simulations have been carried out on real-world pictures with three and eight gray-scale levels.Comment: RevTex 13 pages, 10 figure

    The anisotropy of granular materials

    The effect of the anisotropy on the elastoplastic response of two dimensional packed samples of polygons is investigated here, using molecular dynamics simulation. We show a correlation between fabric coefficients, characterizing the anisotropy of the granular skeleton, and the anisotropy of the elastic response. We also study the anisotropy induced by shearing on the subnetwork of the sliding contacts. This anisotropy provides an explanation to some features of the plastic deformation of granular media.Comment: Submitted to PR

    3D Brain Segmentation Using Dual-Front Active Contours with Optional User Interaction

    Important attributes of 3D brain cortex segmentation algorithms include robustness, accuracy, computational efficiency, and facilitation of user interaction, yet few algorithms incorporate all of these traits. Manual segmentation is highly accurate but tedious and laborious. Most automatic techniques, while less demanding on the user, are much less accurate. It would be useful to employ a fast automatic segmentation procedure to do most of the work but still allow an expert user to interactively guide the segmentation to ensure an accurate final result. We propose a novel 3D brain cortex segmentation procedure utilizing dual-front active contours which minimize image-based energies in a manner that yields flexibly global minimizers based on active regions. Region-based information and boundary-based information may be combined flexibly in the evolution potentials for accurate segmentation results. The resulting scheme is not only more robust but much faster and allows the user to guide the final segmentation through simple mouse clicks which add extra seed points. Due to the flexibly global nature of the dual-front evolution model, single mouse clicks yield corrections to the segmentation that extend far beyond their initial locations, thus minimizing the user effort. Results on 15 simulated and 20 real 3D brain images demonstrate the robustness, accuracy, and speed of our scheme compared with other methods
