This has caused many scientists to look at the history of vegetation migrations to help understand future vegetation management strategies and biodiversity concerns. Our knowledge and understanding of past long-term species range changes is best understood from interpretations of the palynological record. This study reexamines paleopollen data from the World Data Center in conjunction with a recent chloroplastic DNA study of one temperate woody vegetation species, Fagus grandifolia. The pollen percentage level of 0.5 percent of total pollen is used to infer the presence of Fagus grandifolia at palynological sites. When assumptions about the suitability of this threshold are challenged, a different late-Pleistocene geography emerges for Fagus grandifolia. A survey of all palynological sites in the North American pollen database for Fagus grandifolia pollen, in conjunction with supporting DNA evidence, indicates consistent patterns of more northerly refugial locations and different migration routes for Fagus grandifolia than currently accepted. Patterns of pollen deposition and DNA evidence reveal a possible refuge in the area of the northern Mississippi Embayment. There is as well evidence of refugia for and expansion of Fagus grandifolia mixed with boreal forest elements along the Appalachian Plateau, closer to the ice sheet margin than the Gulf Coastal Plain

    Stability and decay of Bloch oscillations in presence of time-dependent nonlinearity

    We consider Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates in presence of a time-modulated s-wave scattering length. Generically, interaction leads to dephasing and decay of the wave packet. Based on a cyclic-time argument, we find---additionally to the linear Bloch oscillation and a rigid soliton solution---an infinite family of modulations that lead to a periodic time evolution of the wave packet. In order to quantitatively describe the dynamics of Bloch oscillations in presence of time-modulated interactions, we employ two complementary methods: collective-coordinates and the linear stability analysis of an extended wave packet.     Dynamics and stability of Bose-Einstein solitons in tilted optical lattices

    Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates realize sensitive matter-wave interferometers. We investigate the dynamics and stability of bright-soliton wave packets in one-dimensional tilted optical lattices with a modulated mean-field interaction g(t)g(t). By means of a time-reversal argument, we prove the stability of Bloch oscillations of breathing solitons that would be quasistatically unstable. Floquet theory shows that these breathing solitons can be more stable against certain experimental perturbations than rigid solitons or even non-interacting wave packets.Comment: final, published versio

    SAMPEX Spin Stabilized Mode

    The Solar, Anomalous, and Magnetospheric Particle Explorer (SAMPEX), the first of the Small Explorer series of spacecraft, was launched on July 3, 1992 into an 82' inclination orbit with an apogee of 670 km and a perigee of 520 km and a mission lifetime goal of 3 years. After more than 15 years of continuous operation, the reaction wheel began to fail on August 18,2007. With a set of three magnetic torquer bars being the only remaining attitude actuator, the SAMPEX recovery team decided to deviate from its original attitude control system design and put the spacecraft into a spin stabilized mode. The necessary operations had not been used for many years, which posed a challenge. However, on September 25, 2007, the spacecraft was successfully spun up to 1.0 rpm about its pitch axis, which points at the sun. This paper describes the diagnosis of the anomaly, the analysis of flight data, the simulation of the spacecraft dynamics, and the procedures used to recover the spacecraft to spin stabilized mode

    D0 HVAC System Controls Evaluation of Upgrade Options

    This engineering note documents three different options for upgrading the Dzero HVAC control system. All three options leave the current field hardware and field devices intact and upgrade the computer control hardware and software. Dzero will be heading into a physics run starting in 2000. This physics run could last several years. The Dzero HVAC system is an integral part of climate control and electronics cooling. The current HVAC control system is based upon a 1985 Johnson Controls System. In order to enter the next long-term physics run with a solid HVAC control system, the current control system needs to be upgraded. This proposal investigates three options: (1) Replacement to the next generation of Johnson Controls Hardware and Software with the Johnson Controls operator interface - FESS; (2) Replacement to the next generation of Johnson Controls Hardware and Software with the FIX32 Operator Interface - FESS/Dzero; and (3) Replacement with a commercially available Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) WITH THE FIX 32 Operator Interface - Dzero

    Deep Space Network information system architecture study

    The purpose of this article is to describe an architecture for the Deep Space Network (DSN) information system in the years 2000-2010 and to provide guidelines for its evolution during the 1990s. The study scope is defined to be from the front-end areas at the antennas to the end users (spacecraft teams, principal investigators, archival storage systems, and non-NASA partners). The architectural vision provides guidance for major DSN implementation efforts during the next decade. A strong motivation for the study is an expected dramatic improvement in information-systems technologies, such as the following: computer processing, automation technology (including knowledge-based systems), networking and data transport, software and hardware engineering, and human-interface technology. The proposed Ground Information System has the following major features: unified architecture from the front-end area to the end user; open-systems standards to achieve interoperability; DSN production of level 0 data; delivery of level 0 data from the Deep Space Communications Complex, if desired; dedicated telemetry processors for each receiver; security against unauthorized access and errors; and highly automated monitor and control
